Ask Joe and me anything about FBG (1 Viewer)

Hypothetical question: the whole FBG staff is taking part in a company meeting at a remote location. There is an earthquake, and all of you are trapped in the building indefinitely with access to water, but no food or communications with the outside world. Which FBG staff member would you vote to eat first, and why?

End of the Year Application to see how Good FBG's are etc:

Can you create an "end of the season application" that is just like the pre season VBD application that allows us to plug in our scoring sysyems, etc and then when we hit the button it generates a ranking sheet showing where all the players ended up ranking out that year according to our individual scoring sytems, etc?

We would then be able to compare this sheet with the preseason VBD sheet.

I think this would be extremely helpful for several reasons:

1. We could compare it to the predraft cheatsheet and see where guys actually ended up compared to where we thought they would end up at the beginning of the season.

2. It would allow us to see where we made good, bad, and ugly picks during our drafts.

3. It would not only reinforce good strategies, but also help us see where we made mistakes.

4. We would quickly be able to see how good you guys really are by comparing the preseason sheet to the post season one.

5. It would allow us to plug in different scoring sytems since many of us play in a variety of leagues.

6. It would help those of us that are going to be joining/starting/taking over a team in a new league. We would be able to plug in the new scoring system for the league that we are getting ready to enter and see who the best players in that particular league were from the year before.

EXAMPLE: In one of my leagues, Eddie Royal was ranked 16th at his position and 48th overall on my predraft VBD cheatsheet. We are pretty sure he did not end up being ranked that high. But where did he end up? How many guys finished ahead of him? Who could/should I have taken instead? I think this would be a powerful tool to reinforce the good things that we did during our drafts, but to also teach ourselves some lessons on what to do and maybe what not to do the next year.

Thanks.

Do you feel that allowing free forum access allowed you to move into a dominant position in the market while other FF websites where charging for forum access?

Good question. IMO, FBG owe Dorey and Walters from the Huddle a beer for going pay. There was a HUGE amount of people that migrated over to this board the day that was announced.

would you consider diversifying the FBG "brand" to include league hosting, a la MFL? it seems like a natural progression to me that FBGs has somehow resisted to this point.
I would second that question. I think FBG would be a great league host due to its reputation and obviously strong FF ties.

Hi Jett,I think the plan is to take the questions through May 31. Then we'll answer. Good ones thus far - thanks.Quick answer though. I say David barely edges me in the wrestling match. Then kills me in - Karaoke- Tickle fight- Bakugan brawl- Egg McMuffin eating contest:rolleyes:J

We are going to leave this thread up until Monday, May 31st.Clayton Gray will then select approximately 30 questions from here and Joe and I will answer as an interview we post as site content. It can be about what we have planned for the website, our takes on certain things happening in the industry, etc.
David,Hi. I saw a story about a startup FF organization on Dateline NBC or 60 Minutes or one of those shows about 4-5 years ago, anyways, it was about a group of guys who decided to start a FF website..one of these partners converted his garage into office space. it was located in San Diego..was that you guys?
I know the guys from KFFL are all Chargers fans.

Do you know any current or former NFL players in the Shark Pool? Or coaches?

Obviously you can't "expose" their screen names... but maybe you could reveal just their real names?

what is FBG's SAC or subscriber acquisition cost?

or is every contestant in the FBG Player Championship a paying customer?

What would it take to develop a button that would list all the NFL teams in a poll -- as either radio-button or check-box options?

1. Who does FBG's see as their main competition right now?

2. What kind of things do you think FBG can do to close the gap (or widen it if you consider FBG the leader)

3. I went to some website where it gave out the value of Domain Names. It had footballguys.com at something around $25K. Do you feel that is accurate?

(I like the business aspect of things ever since the company I work for, Bed Bath and Beyond, crushed our main competitor, Linens and Things. There are so many different ways to run a business.)

4. If Joe and David disagree strongly about a key decision, who holds the tie-breaker vote?

Cutting loose here:

1. Who do you use for legal counsel (privacy policy, contest rules, financings, etc.)?

2. How are you funded? Have you raised outside capital?

3. Why not post the accuracy of your predictions using a method like nDCG that is used for measuring the accuracy of search engine results?

4. Have you thought of adapting a computer model for projections like KUBIAK or Accuscore?

5. Do you think you'll ever update the programming of your apps to be a little sleeker and modern? The coding is a little dated.

6. Why don't you publish the prediction for Games Played and Points per Game in your projections? For example, in each staffer's projections for Big Ben, I can't tell if it's for 10 or 12 games played.

7. How much time do you spend tweaking Joe's Secret VBD Formula? Is it pretty much set or do you continue to develop it?

8. Why not use Tremblay's auction formula method instead of Joe's VBD Formula? What are strengths and weaknesses of each?

9. What do you read to improve your projections and statistical analysis?

10. Do you read much of the work by sabrmetricians to inform your work on football stats?

11. What's the next big thing in fantasy football?

12. Ignore your role as FF site operator. As a fantasy football league participant (let's say you're playing for $1,000,000), what is the one ultimate tool you'd like to have at your disposal (not a crystal ball)?

13. What do you do if there is a lockout in 2011?

14. Single biggest mistake that your competition makes?

15. Ginger or Maryanne?

Do you see a high correlation between poker players and fantasy football players?

Do you guys play poker?

What have you learned from playing poker that has helped you as a fantasy football competitor? Vice versa?

If you had to choose between poker and fantasy football, which would it be?

If you were starting a brand new fantasy football league from scratch and it was the only league you could play in what would the rules be?

PPR? IDP? Dynasty/keeper/redraft? Auction or draft? Return yards? Please be as specific as possible. For example don't just say IDP, how many and what would the scoring look like?

How many times a year do you guys see each other.

If you 2 split up and started new FF websites, and were to draft the STAFF, what would your top 5 cheatsheet look like?

I often say that in order to be the best, you either need to do the same thing that everyone else is doing better than everyone else is doing it... or else you need to do something different than what everyone else is doing. It seems that FBGs first made their mark on the scene by doing something different (Value-Based Drafting), but has now adapted to doing the same thing that your competitors are doing, but trying to do it better than they do. Would you agree or disagree with this perception? If you disagree, then what do you see FBGs doing to innovate fantasy football? If you agree, then are you content with your new role in the market or are you actively working to find new inefficiencies in the market for the average fantasy football player to exploit?

How many actual new subscribers did the Street Team experiment bring in to FBG last year?

Is the number of paid subscribers to the website comparable to the number of free subscribers to the message boards? Is there are large difference? I mean, we can see the number of subscribers to the message boards, but we cannot see the number of subscribers to the pay site, so what is the correlation?

How long will this continue before we get some answers?

...actually DUMB posting(s)......or did you just skip his intro..."We are going to leave this thread up until Monday, May 31st.

What makes you so sure that FBG projections/rankings are better than anyone else's?
this is why they should offer an end of season VBD application that allows us to plug in our scoring system/roster size/etc and hit a button and see where guys actually ended up ranking for the year....we could then take that and compare it to the VBD cheatsheet we used at our drafts prior to the start of the season.....I would think you could almost have a whole forum dedicated to the analysis of this very thing.....example: why did my draft cheatsheet have Eddie Royal at WR18....but he really ended up at WR156....(?)I can gather this info by using my website (MFL) results/rankings and comparing it to my draft VBD cheatsheet.....but it would be cool to have this application available here in case I was joining a new league with a new scoring system/roster size, and I wanted to see how guys finished in that league the previous year.....it's not just about seeing how good FBG's are.....cause I think they are the best, it would just be a great tool going into new/existing leagues.....I would hope FBG is not scared to do it......been asking for years.......it would be the ultimate judge of their pre-draft/preseason service/product........

You can plug your scoring system into MyFBG and do that.

Good question. :lmao: I'd be curious to see if Adam Shefter lurks here. IIRC, doesn't Mark Schlereth have an account?

can you keep the subscriber pay model and continue to expand? have you ever considered offering everything for free and making your money off advertising instead of subscriptions?

Why does the heading on the FBG daily email that goes out each day not have the correct day on it? The heading on the one I received on Friday said, "Footballguys Daily Email - Volume 11 Issue 40 (Wednesday May 27th). The first sentence in the email said "Welcome to Friday." I received the email on Friday morning, the heading has a date of Wednesday May 27th and actually Wednesday was the 26th.

Why doesn't the heading just say the day u sent it? If it's sent on Saturday, May 29th shouldn't that be what the heading says?

I've seen this listed a couple times already, but I feel it'd be a great thing to have, so I'm going to put it on here again.

Why hasn't there been an End of Year Rankings Target Percentage ever been done?

It seems as though that could be a huge selling point to highlight the accuracy of the FBG rankings.

Fear of it being a low % or alienating a portion of peoples ranks as being weak are the only couple of reasons I can come up with. Would these be accurate or is there some other unknown reason?

I don't think this meets the spirit of what you are looking for in the way of questions, but this one has bugged me for years:

As a subscriber, why does my daily information email end @ kickoff opening day? Yes, I know there's a bunch of content posted for the week if I just log on, but sometimes the email is all I have time for, and time (or lack thereof) is why I pay for the service instead of doing the research myself. Plus, the info on the web portal doesn't match up with the overall quality of the daily email when it comes to a quick read, IMHO (one source for news and opinion...).

Question 2: Are there really "forum Nazis" deleting posts that they simply disagree with that is mentioned in other posts in this thread? I can see deleting proprietary or overtly offensive material, but it's not good if posts are now being deleted simply because a mod simply doesn't like it.

As one of many who responded with a facetious question, I don't mind them whittling things down to the more serious posts. :blackdot:

Another question from me.

Why don't you all spearhead a get together in Vegas for week 1 of the NFL? Many of the staff are probably there anyways for the WCOFF, why not have a major FBG event at one of the hotels so posters can meet some of the folks that have grown to admire or not admire so much?

love the site, i'd give everything on it a 9 or 10 rating except for my question below ...

any chance the forum search tool could be improved drastically?

what is it you're trying to improve?generally these internet forums are just software packages that people license like any other program --- not to say that it's impossible to mod them up a bit, but they're pretty much prepackaged 3rd party software.they didn't code this board.
