this may be my favorite soul group song. i also have an O'Jays story.
Poker players will bet on anything. One week, the O'Jays played the casino i was workin at. I was the walkin boss so i went and checked out most of the shows. Brought a whale backstage with me the 1st nite & the O'Jay's (two of the three originals, i think) all had matching iridescent orange suits and they did a change during the show to a color i cant remember. The whale went back to the table & told the other players about it. Soon enough and for the rest of the week, they had a pool going (thousands of bucks) on what color the O'Jay suits would be and i had to go confirm each time.
Man, thanks for doing this today. I caught this in New Meadow , Id, at number 35. Now we are in Grangville on a 4 hour trip to show a 3000 sq ft log cabin home for a client.
This has been the best at40 for me ever. I was almost 13. This is right when I really got into music. 13 all the way down to number 1 now all have just amazing memories for me involving different friends and family.

I was 10 and thus believed everything that was told to me. That said, my snark when I posted some of these songs was just that - snark. I loved listening to AT40 back then.
I have a local am station at the bottom of the dial that plays a ton of this stuff. Everything from the dreck like that Gilbert Godawful song to the gems like the Raspberries song. Great entertainment when on the road latenight.
Yeah, I'm not sure what Richard Carpenter was thinking there. He was usually so careful about how his records sounded. That solo is just so jarring. It's like if Hendrix payed "Purple Haze" over Sinatra's "Strangers In The Night"
