I just love how it sounds, the definition, and green is my favorite color.
I want to name my kid Sage Francis (Francis is my name), but I'm afraid he'll be destined to be a rapper or back up NFL QB.

This. Yikes.Steve-VinI really hope you do/did not do this.Wifey and I want to give our unborn son a "normal" sounding name, but with a unique spelling. So we settled on Styyvyn. Best of both worlds.
more peopleI suppose "in a city like NYC" she could have 11 friends with just about any name. I don't understand why you think there would be a higher concentration here?you do realize that, especially in a city like NYC, she will probably have 11 friends named Maddy before she gets out of elementary school, right?Otis said:Mrs. O and I went through this a month or two ago. It was pretty quick -- someone gave us a baby name book that we never even looked at. We picked a boy name to honor family, but a girl name that she just really liked. Turns out we've got a baby girl on the way -- Madeleine (or "Maddy").Oh and I agree with BF's rules posted earlier and we more or less applied the same. Nice somewhat traditional name but not very common, works well with the last name, and has a sophisticated feel in full but "cutesy" nickname. I think the one place we can be faulted is on spelling, though I'm pretty sure this is the most traditional original (French) spelling. But I'm sure she'll have to explain the spelling a bunch...![]()

First names we just threw a couple out and both liked the same ones. I wanted something different but not weird and whereas he likes more traditional names.

Oh, and I think the kid has his mom's luck. He got picked to be on the cover of Time magazine last year.

(she's the one talking @ 0:20 mark)
Anyway....
My oldest son received his middle name first. As is the tradition with some Asian families, we asked his grandfather to choose his middle name. He came up with Bo Wen, which is Mandarin for Gentleman Scholar. By happy coincidence, my favorite boy's name was Tyler. My in-laws liked this as Ty Lee in Chinese is written as tài lì which translate as "extreme strength." Now if you're thinking that doesn't make any sense, no worries, I felt the same way, but if they were happy, its all good. From Day One he was always called Bo - which made my side of the family happy, because they thought I named him after Bo Schembechler. We never corrected them - yep, that's exactly what we had in mind, naming him after a football coach.
Ten years later when my daughter came along, we jointly chose Chloe. Not even sure of the meaning, it was just the one name we agreed upon. We came up with it after going to a dinner party where the hosts had a Shih Tzu named Chloe. After that we came up with a cover story since we really didn't want people to think our little girl's name was inspired by a dog.

Patrea?Andrick?Like if your wife's name is Susan and yours is Anthony, your kid could be Susanthony. Good for a boy or a girl.
Yes and yes. Why do you hate your unborn son? It's not that bad, is it?This. Yikes.I really hope you do/did not do this.Wifey and I want to give our unborn son a "normal" sounding name, but with a unique spelling. So we settled on Styyvyn. Those people are not your real friends. Friends do not let friends name their son Styyvyn. It's not that bad, is it?We told a few RL friends about it and they all said it was cool... were they just being polite?
Styyvyn breaks almost all of these rules. It is not unique or memorable (until it's spelled, and then it's weird). It is not easily spelled, and your kid will be spelling his name for people every time something official comes up. It's not generational. It does not have longevity - as a kid he'll be made fun of, and as an adult you're locking him in as the guy with weird parents. It's something his friends will make fun of because it's different. You're weird, and that's cool. You seem likable enough. But if you name your kid Styyvyn, you're not giving your kid a chance to not be weird. Think about the psychology of it. There's something weird about their name. They will either embrace it, and demand that other people think it's as cool as they do, or they will be ashamed of it, and try to hide it so they don't get made fun of (weird and sad). Seriously, don't do this. Here are the functional things I'm looking for in a baby name:- recognizable. you don't want people to be confused when they hear the name. Al-lou-ish-us - somewhat unique. you don't want them to be one of ten kids named brady in their class*- not a perjorative. you don't have much control over this, but names like chester or lucius just about guarantee a rough adolescence.- memorable. you want something where they can say, Fred seems like a good guy, and everyone know who Fred is.- easily spelled. you don't want them saying, no, that's stephen with a "ph" a thousand times in their life if they don't have to. - meaningful. family names are good. naming someone after the tibetian word for hope is a little too weird for my tastes.- generational. I'm not seriously considering Fred jr., but I could. My wife asked me if I wanted to name our child after her brother. Maybe as a middle name, but no way that's a first name. sorry. - positive memories - I don't want to name my kid after the guy who stole my first girlfriend. If I've ever met anyone with that name I'd like it to be someone I liked. - famous people - It would be nice if I could point to great people in history and say, you share a name with that guy. Note that this does not include people who have yet to screw up their lives, like Miley Cyrus inevitably will- longevity - A kid named Billy can become Bill or William later in life. A kid named Tiffany is going to be an adult** named Tiffany.- works with my last name - I wouldn't want a kid named Marcus Moops, or Peter Moops, which is just begging to be nicknamed poops. - Email friendly. I've mentioned my friend Sharon Lutz here before, who cried the day she got her first ever email address.- cuteness - If I come up with ten more things, they'd all be ahead of cuteness on this list. Yeah, it'd be nice as an adult to be able to talk about the cutesy wootsy baby waby name for the year or two that they're young and won't even remember it. That's no reason to pick the name they're going to use for the rest of their life. * this is a real issue in new england right now.** entertainer

Pat and Pat can be a man's name or a woman's name, even though they're spelled identically. So can Alex, Chris, Styyvyn, and so on. Jesse and Jessie are pronounced identically, even though Jesse is usually a man's name, and Jessie more of a woman's name. Wow, I would leave a girl over this. It seems to be a pretty important tradition and your wife just said no? And it seemed important to you.My wife has this thing that if anyone we know has a child of the same name, we can't go there. I liked Ella, but one of her friends has a daughter named Ella. We ended up deciding on Ellie for the first name and Paige as the middle name (which happens to be my grandfather's name). I'm a bit concerned that Ellie may not be the best name for an adult (I just think of a child when I think of the name, like Bobby or something), but she can always fall back on her middle name I guess. My wife didn't like any of the common names that are shortened to Ellie like Eleanor, Ellen or Eloise.
I wanted my son to have my name, but that was vetoed right off the bat. Of course my first name was a point of confusion when we first started dating as there were 3 people with my name in our house (My dad, Myself and my step brother). No point in adding another one to the family I guess. We were leaning Evan James if we had a boy.

Let me guess. They think your name is John Rambo?I spend my whole life correcting people on both my first name and last name. You parents, don't make your kids hate you!
You "needed" a J name? I don't get it.My kids -Jessica Emily - just liked the name Jessica...Emily was after my wife's grandmotherJacob Michael - just like the name Jacob - Michael is my first nameJoseph Charles - needed a J name and Joseph is the middle name of my grandfather, Charles is the name of my wife's Dad and was the name of my uncleJames Robert - again needed a J name, James has no significance but it went well with Robert...the name of my DadJoshua Curtis - always wanted a Joshua - Curtis was my wife's maiden nameGo with a J name.Jamaal, Jafar and Jordan are all excellent names...
8yo Lexi - Struggled with this one the most. Just wanted something a little different but not out in the stratosphere uncommon. 6yo Demi - wanted to stick with the 4 letter theme with an I on the end and Demi (originally after Demi Moore) was what we he decided on. It was met with big opposition from the family members and inlaws but with the emergence of Demi Lavato on the kid scene, she is the envy of her kindergarten friends.3yo TJ - grew up a HUGE Mike Tyson fan and was determined to name my first born boy Tyson. But that was before he turned into a self-destructive psychopath. Couldn't do that to my kid. My wife and I both prematurely lost close childhood friends so his name is in honor of them - Tanna + Josh = TJ
Why the same first letter bit? This happens a fair amount and I've never understood why folks go this route. My kids -Jessica Emily - just liked the name Jessica...Emily was after my wife's grandmotherJacob Michael - just like the name Jacob - Michael is my first nameJoseph Charles - needed a J name and Joseph is the middle name of my grandfather, Charles is the name of my wife's Dad and was the name of my uncleJames Robert - again needed a J name, James has no significance but it went well with Robert...the name of my DadJoshua Curtis - always wanted a Joshua - Curtis was my wife's maiden name

They're not pronounced identically in the South. Dawn is pronounced with an exagerrated dipthong. Da-aw-own. My wife has a co-worker named Dawn, and had to learn how to pronounce it the correct Southern way, because pronouncing it like Don meant (and I'm completely serious here) that no one knew whom she was referring to!!!Don and Dawn are pronounced identially, even though Don is usually a man's name and Dawn is usually a woman's name. DOn't discuss names with parents or friends or anyone cause you'll only be ridiculed...either too common, too different, too made up, too short, too long, etc.
