Bad Morning In Brooklyn, Subway Attack (1 Viewer)

other injuries were smoke inhalation, shrapnel, panic injuries

asking the Gov about her just-arrested-this-morning Lt Gov so that's a wrap

just caught some of the presser ... police chief says "no i.d. on ethnicity", then anchor on ABC says black male, about 5'5", 180 lbs

wtf?

she's THE CHIEF ... is she not briefed? or just forgot?

what a circus.

was she responding to whether it was race related crime? because that's heavily hispanic / start of Brooklyn Chinatown around there

WIDELY reported suspect is 5'5", stocky black male

ETA: "heavy build"

no, reporter secifically asked "any word on ethnicity of attacker?"

I will say that is one soft spoken Police Chief

first big moment for her and she did not have much presence IMO

agreed.

5 are critical - those probably went to Maimonisdes Hospital, the closest facility

and absolutely great news none of the victims have life threatening injuries

also pretty remarkable that a panic stampede didn't exacerbate an already horrible situation.

the videos I've seen people were very orderly exiting the train and on the platform

I did crack up at the dude still seated, air pods in, looking at his phone as the entire car got out

it's odd when reading from a prepared statement the police commissioner said the shooter struck people "in the train and on the platform"

I was under the impression all the shooting was inside the smoke filled car

maybe bullet exiting train or shrapnel caught victims on the platform I guess

- 5'5" stocky black male, in construction vest, wearing a gas mask - is pretty damn thorough, considering ... no?

vest/gas mask got ditched immediately probably (that was my assumption)

they'll have something by day's end I'm sure, there are cameras everywhere

he probably blended in with the crowd in the confusion

If you want to enjoy your trip I would avoid the subway
I take it daily with my daughter. Vigilance is your friend, but nowhere mear worse than it was in the late 80s.

We were wondering about hate crime because of the stop/neighborhood and heading Southbound. It's such an odd place for this (although your VA info is interesting). Wife was just thinking it could be a kid too, living out some kind of revenge fantasy.

floppinho was supposed to have a HS track meet out at Poly Prep (which is out past where this happened)... it's been cancelled.

IKR

As for your latter point, I'm the last one that wants to perpetuate myths about PTSD Vets being dangerous. The preplanning and style of the attack makes me think he's got a military or LE background but def could be wrong.

Poly Prep went on lockdown.  School not closed but no one on allowed on campus other than students and teachers.  Think probably not entirely necessary but better to be safe.

ETA - My daughters' school in park slope did the same.

Crazy. This is 60 blocks away

just watched those videos... terrifying.

and so random... location-wise, direction-wise.

if this were about something bigger, terrorist-wise- the guy would've picked someplace bigger, or at least with more associations to the location. this is between Sunset Park and Industry City....and in reverse commute. not a whole lot specifically there that speaks to a larger political point.

Couldve been a hate crime

Couldve been a hate crime
yeah... we discussed that briefly up thread.

seems like something targeted at a specific person or possibly small group. I think of Sunset Park as being primarly hispanic... but you guys said there's a chinese presence there too. but again- it's not like the guy went into the heart of Queens or Manhattan china-towns with his hate... a random stop on the edge of Sunset Park is just so... random.

From Sunset Park to Dyker Heights (where I grew up) is pretty much all Asian now. The videos show tons of Asian people on the train.

heavy Asian these days ... this was a very nondescript locale, otherwise ... bigger picture terror would've hit the City, not byway Brooklyn.

just heard that the cameras were not working at the 36th st location.

Sunset Park is Brooklyn's Chinatown and has a larger population of Chinesse then Chinatown in Manhattan.  It is only slightly smaller then the Queens Chinatown in Flushing.

good info, guys, thanks.

my Sunset Park experience is solely going to the park/swimming pool and/or going to Industry City- more hispanic where I usually venture. I citi-biked to Bay Ridge for a run to the Verazzano once, and ran back... but I was pretty oblivious to who was around me.

at 25th and 36th Street stations it's still heavily Hispanic (D spits off at 36th St)

45th and 59th are Chinatown, R goes south and the N goes east to 8th Ave

8th Ave is like Canal Street, it's zoo below 59th, you can barely walk there weekends

NY Post reporting 29 injuries now, still at 10 shooting victims.

A jammed Glock and two extended ammo magazines were later recovered at the scene.

Shooter's gun jammed on the train or it could have been way worse.

aside - the temporary veteran housing where I lived for a year was on the N train, I got off the stop past 8th Ave, Fort Hamilton

As the investigation continues, a police official told ABC News that there were no working cameras inside the station at the time but that law enforcement did get an image of a suspect from a bystander's cell phone video. The police official said the suspect was seen mumbling to himself before putting on the gas mask and shooting.”

Extended mags seem like a great idea on paper.  I know the movie theater shooter got off a lot fewer rounds for those jamming as well, at least a couple more of these were less tragic for the cheap mags.  Didn't even the Vegas guy have trouble at times?

The NYPD is reportedly looking for a U-Haul with Arizona license plate #AL31408 (NOTE: All U-Hauls have Arizona plates)
I've never heard this.

regardless... dude had a U-Haul reserved for this? ####. that sounds worse and ongoing, at least in terms of potential further damage/injury.

yep.

as i said earlier this morn, this dude executed a well thought out plan ... too methodical to be a rando outburst.

agreed. the gas mask and smoke bombs aren't a heat of the moment kind of action.

but still weird to me to pick that location if it's all so well thought... part of why this new info about a UHaul has me spooked.
