This image was sent to me last week and it was suggested for including in the Random Shots column where I post a bunch of the goofy stuff I've seen this week. I chose not to include it. But wanted to get your take. https://imgur.com/a/cogqp2c

My question for you: On a scale of 1 - Not Inappropriate or Racist at all to 10 Extremely Inappropriate or Racist, where do you see this?

And that's the only question. Not whether it's funny or the "joke works" or any of that.
I voted wrong but many people travel this way in other countries and do it with trains too.  The pic reminded me of a documentary I saw the joke just seemed of poor quality given the material.

If anyone can find me a picture of clearly white, middle/upper class people stuffed shoulder to shoulder on the back of a vehicle, I'll accept that. But a quick Google search of "people on back of truck" just shows minorities and/or poverty stricken. This is just a case of meme creators working with what pictures are available out on the web.
Some folks'll never lose a toe, and then again some folk'll...

It's interesting to note that the posters who tend to add personal comments about others ("too sensitive", "too high strung", "looking to be offended") also tend to be the ones defending the picture.

I don't think that's a coincidence.

If you have something to say be direct and say it.

They may be in poverty as much of the world is but they are not minorities in the country they live or where the photo was taken.  Many here would be a minority in that picture but they are not.

Not sure what you mean. Wouldn't it be expected that someone who thinks the picture is fine would think those who don't think it's fine are being too sensitive?

What I mean is that, for the most part, those who think it's inappropriate have just said (paraphrasing), "It's inappropriate." They haven't felt the need to add "and anyone who disagrees with me is too insensitive". Their initial reaction does not include an attempt to preemptively discredit or mock the opinion of others.

It might be standard transportation for the area. Hell, it might be the only available transportation for the area for all I know. And if that's the case, it's a sad fact. But that's not something that I would ever revel in. And it would make me think less of any person or business who thought it would be funny to laugh at someone else's economic hardship.

I also wonder if there isn't an element of "my side" in these.

I think as someone who likes Aikman and Jay-Z and is also a Christian, I may feel more liberty to make a Aikman/Jay-Z or Mayfield as Jesus joke.

In other words, because I'm a Christian, I'd be way less comfortable making a Muslim joke than I would a Christian joke. I wonder if that's normal?
I'm one of those people who think that people who get bent out of joint over a joke are ridiculous, but I would think a Christian would be less comfortable blaspheming Jesus than almost any other type of jibe.

Has anyone complained about the black eye logo yet and how it can be symbolic of violence in domestic abuse or bullying?
Many times, but, laser surgery to remove tattoos is expensive so....

Quality point. I'm certainly speaking from a US-centric viewpoint (probably without even thinking about it).

It's not racist. Why would it be?

It's not sexist, ageist, antisemitic or homophobic either. Why would it be?

I understand what you're saying. I just don't see it as blaspheming as much. I don't pretend to know the mind of Jesus, but my take on it is he would see that and 😉  Maybe that's on me.

It can be debated whether it's funny, apt, or appropriate (or whether Jesus would view it that way), but seeing blasphemy is comparing a mortal or an object to God, replacing God with a mortal or an object, or a mortal claiming to be God, it's pretty much straight-up blasphemy. I do hope you have a wonderful new year though.

Walking around trying to avoid the proverbial eggshells is a helluva way to live.  How can you have a conversation with someone about anything that's vaguely contentious if you limit yourself to not saying anything that they may find offensive?

Thanks. We can just disagree there on the blasphemy. I think having a thicker skin there is much better.

And I hope you have a wonderful new year too.

The context it’s being used in I don’t see it as inappropriate. Somewhat accurate as I felt our season was over weeks ago. 🤔

Sorry, not a dig, I just find this funny. You are talking about a thick skin being better, but cater to those without one. It just sorta struck me as :D .
That's a fair point. I do agree a thick skin is way better and try to operate that way for myself. Not getting upset over a Baker Mayfield as messiah image is part of that. But also understand and try to empathize with those that are more sensitive. Delicate balance sometimes. And also for the original point, because it's "my" religion that's part of the joke, I'll have a higher tolerance for it.

Defacing Christ ok, putting yoga pants on a woman not. Weird time to be a Christian.
Thanks. I don't disagree it's kind of a weird time.

But you have it wrong.

It's not "Defacing Christ ok, putting yoga pants on a woman not."

It's "Not getting too upset over a Baker Mayfield as messiah joke ok, bunch of guys with anonymous screen names drooling over women and making sexist "locker room" comments in a public forum not".

It's my opinion we Christians would be better off if we had a little thicker skin. Where we don't walk around with a chip on our shoulder looking for any perceived slight to whine about. It's just a bad look.

It's also my opinion I'm not going to host a forum where as it was said to me, Guys want to be able to say "check out the #### on that chick".

I get that holding those two opinions might seem weird to some people. But that's where I am.

@Joe Bryant, would you be asking this question if all the people piling on the truck were white?
Yes.

As I said above, I don't think it's a racist thing as much as it's making a joke at the expense of poor people.

So for me, I think it would be pretty much the same if all the people were white.

I'll also admit, I have a soft spot for the poor. You know we do the thing with Homeless folks downtown. I admit I'm probably overly sensitive to this.

Not even making a point Joe. I was just pointing out that, for whatever reason, it was an actual LOL moment for me. Well, I guess I was making a point, that point being that I laughed. But that's all. Hence the smiley.

It's not inconsistent to not want to objectify women and be a technical blasphemer at the same time. The non-objectification of women doesn't need a religious impulse. Just ask Ms. magazine or NOW or a host of men and women in America who blaspheme all the time.

Not that I agree that we objectified women too much around here. Sure, some took it too far. But the yoga pants thread was obviously culled from self-promoters and people showing off. Otherwise, why the pictures? The lovely ladies threads were models who really put it out there. I've never really gotten that. I still haven't heard from otb_lifer. Miss that dude.

The who's hottest threads were what got out of control a bit, I think, and that's where the line was drawn.

I'm struggling with this line of thinking and the assumption these people are poor. They just live a different life than many of us. These are likely just people heading out for their day at work, market, whatever. I have seen this with my own eyes dozens of times and even hung on the back of a school bus with Mrs. Punk in Panama to get to town. Thousands upon thousands of people travel this way and I would bet many would not trade their "poverty" for being crammed into a subway or spend two hours on a smog filled freeway to make their living.

With all due respect, I call BS, Joe. If it’s about socioeconomic status and not race then why did you ask if it’s racist?

  Is this image racist?

I was one of the ones who assumed they were poor, and your point was taken upthread by me. Something to think about, anyway.

If you think that's BS,   Not sure what to tell you other than I think I know what I think maybe better than you know what I think.

That's fair too and maybe a trouble with assumptions. Seems like it's a struggle there for their transportation. But you're right, it's possible that's not the case.

And to be clear, this isn't about if you're offended.

The question I'm asking here is if you think it's Inappropriate and/or Racist?
I say no to both questions, but judging by the criteria you are trying to hold the site and the boards to, it's also probably not something that you would want to post on the main page of the site, either.
