CBS Sportsline is reporting that the White Sox are closing in on Javier Vacquez:

The White Sox are close to acquiring Javier Vazquez from the Diamondbacks for Chris Young, Orlando Hernandez and a second pitcher, according to CBS SportsLine.
I think Don Cooper (Sox pitching coach) is among the best in the business, and should have Vazquez back to his 02-03 form shortly. Trading Young could bite the Sox down the line, but I like the move as insurance for Garland's impending departure.

Yep, I think that would be a huge coup for the Sox. Only thing that worries me is Vazquez's initial foray into the AL...he wasn't too good back then.

He was pretty good in the first half for the Yanks. I think he succumbed to the pressure of NY/playoffs.

 Where does Brandon McCarthy fit?

My thoughts on Nomar to the Yankee rumors:Positives:1) Hes very athletic and I see no reason he cant play 1B2) Hes still a great hitter when healthy. I can easily see numbers on .320, 25, 903) Yanks thinking outside the box. No 1B or CF available in Free Agency. Dont want to trade their prospects for a 1B or CF. So they go after an athletic hitter who can fill one of their holes.4) Can handle the spotlightNegatives:1) Always gets hurt. If they give him a long or expensive deal it would hinder them more than help them.

Is it funny or sad that even the Bill Mueller's of the world will take less money to play anywhere besides Pittsburgh?
As a Pirates fan, I'm glad he chose the Dodgers. He's not enough of an upgrade over Freddy Sanchez to warrant a 3 year contract, and Jose Bautista will be ready before then. There are better ways to spend the team's resources. I'd rather they go after Joe Randa if they feel the need to bring someone in.

Once again, this guy is two years removed form being the AL batting champion. :loco:

And if you look at the rest of his career, 2003 was a fluke. Hasn't come close since, and hadn't come close before. He's a .285 to .290 hitter who might hit 10-12 HRs in a good year, likely a little less in a place like Dodger stadium. His OBP will always be good, not spectacular, around .370 or .380.

Freddy Sanchez is 27 years old and saw his first extensive time in the majors last year. He hit .291 with 5 HRs in around 450 ABs, but his OBP is the big difference between he and Mueller. Sanchez's was a little low (around .330), but that has room for improvement as he gets more experience.

Both are very good in the field, but I think Sanchez has more of a chance of actually improving at this stage of his career.

That difference isn't worth a 3 year committment from a team that doesn't have the resources of other teams, especially when Mueller will be 35 before the season starts.

.370 or .380 is spectacular (top 40 in baseball)

I think ARZ made out well in that deal.Could turn out to be a good deal for both teams, though.

Hernandez is the wild card I think.

Point taken, but he's still only got marginally more power (unless Sanchez improves), just about the same batting average, and they both are very good in the field. Sanchez is just entering his prime, and Mueller's almost 35.I'd love to see Mueller's OBP in the Pirates' lineup, but between that stuff and the fact that Jose Bautista was the team's minor league player of the year in 2005 and is set to start at 3B in AAA, I see no reason to want Mueller signed to a 3-year deal.

The White Sox are having a helluva offseason. If you told me last year at this time, they'd trade Rowand, El Duque, Vizcaino, Marte and prospects for Thome, Vasquez and Mackowiak I'd laugh in your face and have you institutionalized. Now they need to deal (soon to be free agents) Garland or Contreras for a young up and coming stud CF.

Lance Nyx as the PTBNL to fill the hole by the absence of Michaels if/when he gets traded to the Yanks?
I really hope they would not trade Padilla for a 4th outfielder.I'm holding out for Hank Blalock here ;)
I know you were just kidding, but I read it's the Phils choice of Ricardo Rodriguez or Julio Gonzalez. By the way, for those who didn't know and are curious, a PTBNL deal is typically an arrangement where the teams agree upon a list of players to be chosen from within a certain time frame, typically prospects (although in this case Rodriquez obviously has ML expereince).

Red Sox are talking to the Mariners looking to move Matt Clement for OF Jeremy Reed. :bag:
That would be a great move for the Sox. I believe its their contingency plan if they cant resign Damon. Clement is a head case, always will be. His great 1st half last year was an aberration especially considering he still had an ERA in the low 4's. Reed is a great fielder and should improve as a hitter.

No, that isn't necessary since they think Brian Anderson will fill that role. If they are going trade Garland or Contreras, it better be for pitching. Only thing they really NEED now is another LHRP.

Although I agree CHW has so far had a very good off-season, I think it's dangerous to just throw out "and prospects" without discussing the relative merits of those minor-league players. In this case, the "and prospects" were arguably three of CHW's 10 best prospects. Not insignificant. It's the difference between reading on the ESPNNews ticker:

BOS trades SS Edgar Renteria + Cash to ATL for a minor-leaguer.

vs.

BOS trades SS Edgar Renteria + Cash to ATL for minor-league 3B Andy Marte, Baseball Prospectus's 2005 #1 ranked minor league player, whose career path at this point is most comparable to Miguel Cabrera.

FWIW, I thought both of the CHW deals seemed good for both of the teams that made the trade when I first saw them.

Red Sox no longer in talks to trade for Tejada, as Balitimore wanted Manny, a pitcher, and a pitching prospect. Sox are talking like Manny will be a Red Sox again come opening day.Nomar apparetnly set to pick from Yankees, Dodgers, Astros, and Indians offers soon.Red Sox, Braves, Devil Rays, and Angels all have made offers to former SD RP Rudy Saenz.

I'm shocked, shocked that this didn't happen.I ddn't believe this hype from day 1.

I like Looper, but between this and the Rincon signing, it just makes me wonder if Walt has that much lack of faith in someone from his farm filling in roles.Although, I will say this, this signing makes me feel a LOT better about the Cards bullpen:

Closer: Izzy

RHP's: Looper, Thompson, ???

LHP's: Rincon, Flores, Tyler Johnson?
The problem isn't in the bullpen (esp since we got Rincon to replace that bum Ray King), it is in the rotation. Carp, Mulder, Suppan....then what? Where is our #3 guy? Suppan is a GOOD #4, but just an average #3. Marquis is not the answer. Is it time to give the young guys a chance?I honestly think we are 10-15 games worse this year based on our lack of signings coupled with the signings of other teams. Milwaukee will be markedly better this year and the Cubs have imporoved as much as I hate to admit it. The sky isn't falling, we still have a solid team - but I am extremely disappointed with the lack of signings this winter considering the new stadium revenue and new radio revenue.

EDIT to add - Looper is a gas can. I hope Duncan straightens him out.

Great. So now we have a hole at second base, too. Jocketty better have a miracle waiting in the wings because Cardinal nation is getting restless.

You already have a 2B from the Ray King trade. Aaron Miles.

Aaron Miles?!? The Miles that hit .208avg .292 slg .247 oba on the road last year? :lmao:

Entering his 12th season in the majors, Mike Myers, 36, said he relied on guile. "God didn't give me the ability to blow a ball by anybody," he said. "I really have to use Jedi mind tricks to get guys out."
:nerd:

FLA trades P Ron Villone to NYY for minor league P Ben Julianel.EDIT: Hey, where did my Marcus Dupree avatar go?

More Boston Globe Sox news . . .- Boston rumored to be looking at acquiring SS Julio Lugo again- Nomar thought to prefer the Dodgers (near home) than the Yankees- Damon mentioned he may be playing with Nomar again (so Dodgers may get Damon as well)- Sox step up talks with Seattle on OF Jeremy Reed. Boston has offered SP Matt Clement. Mariners want SP/RP Bronson Arroyo- Roger Clemens has said IF HE RETURNS to MLB in 2006, it will be on either the Astros, Rangers, Yankees, or Red Sox- Boston has been in contact with Cleveland to acquire OF Coco Crisp for newly acquired 3B prospect Andy Marte and newly acquired RP Guillermo Mota. Indians are also interested in Arroyo as part of the deal.

And to think, the Cards gave up Crisp so we could have Tawny Kitaen's punching bag for a half season.

Don't forget the immortal Deivi Cruz.....I suspect that Jocketty and LaRussa want Luna to win the 2B gig next year. I doubt we go after a 2B now.

Is Millwood still out there?

1. Is Coco Crisp a CF? I thought I saw him mostly playing LF.2. Isnt he an extra OF, is he that good? Isnt Marte the 2nd coming?

Coco I believe has played some CF. Not sure why he was primarily a LF, but I believe I heard his arm strength is somewhere between poor and mediocre.BTW, the Sawx would be morons if they dealt Marte for him. Marte will be a good 3B in the bigs, overrated or otherwise.

Buzz getting louder on Crisp

The Eagle-Tribune's Rob Bradford reported Friday that, according to two unidentified major league front-office sources, the Red Sox on Thursday night appeared "primed" to deal newly acquired prospect Andy Marte and reliever Guillermo Mota to the Indians in exchange for Crisp. However, Bradford went on to write that the potential deal is reportedly contingent on whether the Indians sign Nomar Garciaparra, who is thought to be pondering offers from four teams, including the Indians, Yankees, Dodgers, and Astros. The Boston Globe reported Friday that the Red Sox have talked with the Indians about the switch-hitting Crisp, and that the Indians would like Bronson Arroyo in return. The 26-year-old Crisp hit .300 with 16 homers, 69 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases in 2005.
