Been a good run...I'm done with the FF (1 Viewer)

Interesting last night. Watched the Packers game with two guys still playing in my dynast league I just retired from. All Packers fans. After the bigDavid Johnson play one says, "that's my guy." I looked at him and said "all my guys wear Green and Yellow now." Felt good not to have split allegiance.
I am loving watching football again for the first time in a long while (last 5 years particularly). And that is the primary reason I gave this up. I just was not enjoying watching NFL football anymore.

It's really that simple for me.
While I'm sure that this particular set of NFL playoff games has helped LARGELY contribute to a "perfect storm", I have to agree.

I have enjoyed watching these NFL playoffs more than any year I can remember in a lonnng time. Two months ago, I was frustrated with all the delays, the non-stop "did it move a fraction...is it still a catch?", holding my breath every time one of "my guys" was caught on camera with a limp, etc, etc. And now, I feel like the governor has been removed and the game is full throttle.

These games have been a blast and I'm sure a huge part of it is that subconscious monkey that has been lifted off my back of watching these games from a fantasy perspective. Not once have I had to think "So, if Burfict is suspended, I guess I need a LB for the first few weeks in my IDP dynasty league next year." I mean, basically already doing work in 2016..No thanks.

Or, in the SuperBowl roles around and I see Gronk carted off with an ACL, imagine my relief that I don't have to be grumpy for 9 months in theory and then grumpy for a couple more in earnest.

FF will always be a great chapter of my life that I wouldn't have any other way and would do all again but it is just that —a chapter—one of MANY things that I hope will make up my hopefully long, satisfying life experience, not the ONE thing that all my kin will think should go on my tombstone.

Perhaps I missed it up thread but wouldn't quitting ff include quitting ff forums?
I don't see why people would think that.

I grew up eating steak with A1 steak sauce and then when I met my father-in-law he showed me how when you make a truly great steak, it is almost an insult to ruin a steak by putting sauce on it. That's not to say I don't still like A1 and other flavor enhancing sauces on other things— I just know now that the two aren't married to be enjoyable...like Peanut butter. Great with chocolate but stands well on its own, too.

For me, the discussion of FF related topics is still a viable thing. It may help me see where I had biases. It may help me stay connected to the league teams as a whole even though I am sure I will now really only focus on a few of my more favored teams.

It's like guys that don't dig IDP. You can still have a very healthy appreciation of FF without ever falling in love with JJ Watt or Luke Kuechly.

Cut back on leagues and don't be the commish in any of the leagues you stay in. I was going to quit FF last year. I shut down one league and dropped 2 others. Life is much better. Also, I shut down the podcasts, forums, articles etc. during the NFL season. There's enough football (and life) going on that I don't need to overwhelm myself.

***************

The problem with trying to give up the Shark Pool is that the people who post here (in general) are way more educated on the sport. The majority of the knowledge is numbers based but that doesn't mean it's wrong. Other forums that I've been on they seem to be just fans arguing with zero facts or references to back them up. And and talking to the general public hurts my head.

Fantasy football is a gift to all of us who at heart are just giant football nerds. I'd much rather have talks with a person I meet about "Who should I draft here?" or "Do you think I should start this guy?" or "Is this a good trade?" Rather than about how amazing or terrible this guy or that team is. Those talks still happen but not as much and when they do there's a least a small amount of information behind it. Fantasy football is indirectly educating the casual to average fan.

To the point about this board, it's all those great conservations I have in person but on body builder levels of steroids. I have always ahead of the curve against my average football friend but this board has helped me refine my views, options and thoughts. And also provided me with new thoughts and ideas. Fantasy football is still a by product of real NFL football and because of that fantasy football (and this board) gives me an avenue to build my knowledge and a semi-practical place to apply it.

Sabertooth, it isn't just you who has decided to quit fantasy football. A lot of my "real" football friends are saying the same thing. I've said the same thing. Normally, I wouldn't try to convince anyone to stick with something they don't like however, you've been around long enough and I've been having this conversation enough that I think it's important for us (the football geeks and die-hards) to get back to playing FF for the love of real football. Take a break if you need but there's tape to watch, personnel changes to break down and theories to be tested.

I really wish I could be more like some of the guys in this thread....but I'm just NOT.

The money side of things always interested me, and as a professional poker for roughly 20 years, money plays a role in many things I do.

It also translates into why I enjoy fantasy.

But further than that, I enjoy games, and excelling in games, learning strategy and simply being ahead of the next guy, and its a perfect setting in fantasy.I have always been competitive in virtually everything that I do, fantasy included.

Saying that, if I took fantasy out of my life, I would have virtually no interest whatsoever in the NFL, nor would I have much desire to watch any specific games.

I said it in some other thread long ago, but I had stayed away from the NFL and football for many years before I got invited into a fantasy league. Hell, I didn't watch a SuperBowl for many years, barring having it on during a poker game, or maybe just a random 3-4 minutes going on in the background.

I do have a bit of a monetary interest in the Cardinals this week, as I placed a couple of "future bets" early season, on AZ to win the NFC and Super Bowl. I may watch it since we are going to get a ton of snow.

(going to hedge on the Panthers too :) )

But generally I'm not a sports bettor though, and I have known a few guys that literally lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Car dealerships, grocery stores, houses, marriages, you name it, I have seen guys lose pretty much everything.

I know I'm completely different than most here, but if I were to quit fantasy altogether, then it would be just like a light switch going off.

As far as I'm concerned, the NFL might as well not even exist.

FF is like fat chicks and drinking. I love both of them but they should be done in moderation & not take over your life. FF isn't for everyone but there is a middle ground between obsession and no interest.

I may have spoken prematurely.   Going to stay in my dynasty league. :bag:
Not a shock. Unless you back out early and ask to be replaced, it's far too easy to stay in once draft season approaches. Personally, I resigned championship week in 3 leagues and have already been replaced so there is no going back. Stayed in 3 others as planned.

Try to keep in mind that you can run bad your entire FF career lolol. The only way to maybe mitigate it is to play a larger sample. If you play one or two leagues a year.......well accept the fact that you could easily run bad your entire life.

I only pay attention to those that leave all their leagues without telling anyone except the commish of the league they are leaving.  Now those are the owners who really want out.

Hey Sabertooth, it's ok.  You came on to vent and had every intention of quitting, you just didn't execute.  At least you came back to eat your crow.  I exited all the leagues I intended to and stayed in the one I wanted.  Also came up with a game plan to control the amount of time I spend on research.  Like slack jaw said, you gotta just rip it off like a band aid.  Hoping you at least take a new approach this year and make it more enjoyable.

Now just remember, next time you want to quit, don't post about it. Everyone who doubted you and came back to insult you are far superior humans and never make mistakes in life.  They will eat you alive with their awesomeness.

Been in your shoes before. Only in two leagues (one Dyno...one redraft). Good success in both for me but got sick of the time and the fun it sucked out of the game I grew to love. Have not quit but it has crossed my mind on several occasions and probably would just take one additional issue to say goodbye. Until then I am just tee-ter tottering around until I come to my senses.

Down to one League this year. But there's no juice. Usually I'm super pumped this time of year. Im taking an extreme Laissez faire attitude this year. I've done zero prep work and my draft is Saturday. In years past I'd be neck deep in research. I'd be analyzing 3ed and 4th string RBs and WRs on teams just to find a hidden gem. And for what? It hasn't netted a championship yet and only gained me frustration and resentment from my family.

Nope. Doing it the complete opposite this yea and not stressing a minute about it. Whatever happens happens.

Being in one league for some years now continues to be really enjoyable. That said I also don't have an NFL team which is also really enjoyable. I get to watch all the games and enjoy them.

Same here.  I normally would have made 10 trades by now and picked up and dropped 20 guys based on preseason games looking for that "gem".  My attitude is the same as yours, whatever happens, happens.

Not sure about you other guys but I'm 37 with 4 kids and my schedule between work and family just won't allow for this hobby to be more than a quick distraction when I need a 5 minute break from reality.

Gone are the days of spending hours hashing out a trade negotiation or researching division 2 udfas to find the needle in the haystack. As you get older and your priorities change, you just naturally care less about things like this.  I'm super competitive and used to get very frustrated watching every Sunday.  Winning won't mean as much as it would have to me years ago, but I'm ok with that.  It's not like I'm taking my fantasy football trophy with me when I die and the winnings of 1200 bucks certainly won't change my life much.

Good luck to all this year for a fun and mentally stress free season.

I had a dynasty startup the other night on MFL.  It was auction and got really glitchy.  Guys were missing out on players supposedly, whatever....turned into a huge gripe fest and people started talking about integirty and bull#### like that.  I said....nah...I'm done.  It transported me right back to the end of last season where fantasy football was a total suck.  We had a 14 mean dynasty all set at 2:00.  By 4:00 two guys had decided not to participate despite logging in and renaming their temas and all that jazz.  We got an owner but were sitting at 13.  Two guys were out of state so we knew they'd be remote.  The remaining 11 guys all live within 5 miles of the draft party site.  5 showed up, the rest stayed at home and did it online.   I thought that was pretty disrespectful of the host.  Here he kicks his wife out and has pizza and stuff for people and they just stood it up.  I started thinking immediately about last season and the suck.

Draft turns to #### after about two hours.  So I just shut it down.  I said I'd refund everybody's money except leaguesafe fees.

The hangover from that night lasted yesterday.  Today I quit my other two leagues as well.  I'm done.  At least for a year.  It just sucks when the social aspect is stripped away.  Might as well just play fanduel or madden.  I didn't get in for the gambling or the competition.  I circled back for the social gathering.  Apparently I'm just too old fashioned and it's passed me by.

That said...Mike Evans is the league MVP this year!

Have fun fellas.  Sabertooth out.

Wow, that is a #### move to not show up to the draft. I'm right there with you about the social aspect. I enjoy playing during the season, but I love the drafts and I am in 3 now partly because I moved far enough away from my long time league about 10 years ago. I didn't want to do FF only online, so at least 2 of the 3 are still in person. I stay in the long time one because I have won the past two years so my entry fee is already paid for this year. I thought about dropping 2 years ago and OBJ picked my team up and I'm still there because of him (my 1 keeper yet again).

I think I may be back in the just having fun area. My 3 boys are now all old enough that it is less of a chore and they all "really" watch the Panthers with me, so it's more fun.

I want to move to Charlotte.  Michigan blows.  Can't get the wife on board quite yet.

Going to drop my final two leagues after this playoffs. Been fun bantering with you guys. The game just isn't what I started playing 20 years ago. Like most things in life it just isn't fun after a while. Going to focus all this time and money on something productive.

Go Pack Go.
:sadbanana: I can't read through the 11 pages about a guy quitting fantasy football in December of 2015 but must admit I'm curious how it's still getting bumped in September of 2016.

Grew up in CT, moved down to DC for almost 10 years, been down here for 10. Love it. Worst part is that it can get extra hot, if you are sitting outside (like watching kid's sports), but if you have something cold to drink and sunscreen, I am pretty sure that having to wear shorts and a t-shirt is never really all that bad. The rest is all good, like being able to grill out pretty much all year round or wearing shorts and a sweatshirt or t-shirt and jeans into November. We've had family over our house for several Thanksgivings and even without the outdoor fireplace going, it is always nice.

I'm only in 2 leagues local leagues (low stakes) and both that I commish.  I find that I only enjoy the personal aspect of the leagues, so work hard to have people I know (and like) in the league, ideally local.

It's incredibly frustrating what you describe above...bs arguing, no respect/recognition of the work it takes to keep a league together, organized and informed (not to mention competitive).

I did find that Fantasy, esp with alot of leagues, makes watching the games not as fun for me: something I'm reminded of every playoffs.

When you made your orig post, I also was feeling the same exact way, and prob would feel the same way with what you describe above.   I think for me, I may just relax the amount of time I spend on research...hopefully I can do that successfully this year.

I quit the one league that turned nasty over obvious collusion last season. I gave them plenty of notice so they could replace me. Fireleague is a great game where you dont need a draft or a commissioner. I play that one and a casual no money redraft league. Life is too short to haggle with the whiners and or colluders.

I live in CA now but lived in Charlotte for 5 years.  Loved it there.  I have lived all over the country and it is easily one of my favorite places to live.

Because the OP whined about how he was going to quit. But then, as many predicted, he un-quit. Now apparently he's going to quit, again.

I quit and stayed quit.  Great feeling.  FF is an utter waste of time, even worse than the FFA.

Good for you!

Still out, still happy.  I've really enjoyed chatting football and thinking about the real life and ff aspects but without all the bias that comes with it or worrying myself to death over Jamaal Charles/Spencer Ware, the loss of Teddy Bridgewater for the season, etc.

In years past, I would anguished over something so small as a dynasty stash...Tyler Gafney or D.j. Foster....OR, hey, what about this Eli Rogers guy??

I have noticed I am not around here (FBG) nearly as much and I DO miss that but otherwise, I'm just happy real football is getting going and I'm looking forward to some of the early games.

If you were the OP, I would understand your response. Since you weren't, I'm not sure of your point. I'm with you BTW, quit years ago and was never really tempted to go back. But I was just answering the fellows question of why the thread seemed to bump itself.

Lol why do you spend so much time just go with 1 league, fbg projections, recommended waiver picks, enjoy some beer and count your money at the end of the season

Lots of room in FFA.

Went to the draft completely blind. It was actually refreshing. I made picks close to the suggested slot and went with FFCalculator as my guide. Anyone I didn't know I did a quick search on the board here just to make sure he wasn't hurt.

I also didn't do any of the setup for the draft having handed off the commish duties after 7 years. I kind of chuckled a bit when the guys that replaced me had to watch as Yahoo locked them out of pausing the draft after 5 times when it kept auto picking everyone's keeper. They had to bust out a spreadsheet and start typing. I just sat back and let it all happen. They figured it out eventually.

So glad my high school buddies still get together for a weekend of eating, drinking and fantasy football.  I look forward to it every year and it's what really keeps me interested in fantasy football. This is year 27 of that league.

I'm in 2 other online draft leagues that I pretty much hate but like the commishes and they are cheap so I stay in.  They are boring as hell but whatever.  I'd agree 100% with you if not for my draft weekend with the boys.

I've felt this way with season long leagues the past couple years...kind of going through the motions. A combo of a rash of injuries and just some other bad luck and bad decisions along with finding daily fantasy far more exciting. But everything has it's ups and downs so I'm going for it again, hoping to get back up.

I envy your group.  My high school friends aren't close like that any more.  Too many with their faces stuck in their phones or afraid of their wives.

I think  I need better friends.
