Being a manager (1 Viewer)

So my manager just said they are hiring a new person and its completely up to me if he wants this person to report to me. He didn't mention anything about if this means I get a new title or a raise. He just said if I think having someone report to me will make my life easier then he will make it so. If I think having someone report to me would make things more difficult, especially with a new baby on the way in May (as I will be taking some time off) then I can wait until September or not take him on at all and he will report to him.

So first of all, I don't see the point of taking on additional responsibilities of being a manager without the additional pay. I've never been a manager before so I dont know what it entails but imagine it can be stressful.

Are you me? I have a kid due April 30 and was just given hire/fire over six folks with no pay bump. GL with it. IMO, if you don't take a direct report, you're not going to advance where you are.

I'm not a fan of managing people I didn't pick. Sure, it can work out sometimes, but I've found it to be much better for me when I pick the person.

Full manager or just projects?

I had 2 people "report" to me but for work stuff only. Meaning I delegated what work I needed done, etc.

As far as reviews and paperwork and timeoff and all that bull crap my manager did all that stuff.

If you care about advancing take it. If you are fine having the job you have now indefinitely then don't.

Some people are so comfortable with a role/pay they don't care to push up the ladder. For everyone else, take the DR now.

You're probably not the right guy for the job. I say this not because you care about money (we all do) I say this because you seem to have a pretty narrow view of the big picture.

1 person only? Sounds like a way to dip your toe in and see if you like it. Managing 1 person is not too much work.

Yeah I dont really care about molding a young man into a future star or the big picture. I fully admit that. I love my job now but would definitely take it on if it meant a big bump in $$ and Ill be the company man.

Depends on what you want your future to be with the company IMO. If you want to grow into a manager position or look for a promotion here is your opportunity. But be aware, it can back fire also. They may have hired an under qualified person and their failure could reflect on you.

But if you want to take your job to the next level, this might be the test your superior is offering you.

Another way to look at it is that if you think you might be interested in managing at some point, this would be a nice way to get your feet wet withouit committing to managing a whole group.

While we're in here, can you address your avatar? Is that a female bowler? If so, why?
Isn't that the Micaela girl from the US Olympic gymnast team? I think that is the pic of her with her 'not impressed' facial expression after missing the Gold on something. I seem to remember a thread around these parts showing that she was quite the hot girlie that liked taking lots of pics nowadays.

As for the thread.... this seems like one of the oddest things you could do.

"Hey, do you want someone to report to you?" with no further info......

If this is your friend proposing this to you, why not just straight up ask him what this would mean in terms of change for you? (and come to think of it, even if it was just a random co-worker I'd still ask this question)

- What would be expected of me for "managing" this person? (just delegate work to them? monthly/yearly reviews?, etc.)

- Why would taking this on be of a benefit to me? (someone else to help me with my work? Opportunity for me to grow within the company? Higher pay for increased responsibilities? New title?)

For the sake of the newly hired guy, please pass.

he was talking to me on the phone and said we'd talk more about it. I don't need to answer right now.

Well, I guess it makes more sense in terms of a pre-warning "Hey, there is this possibility..... we will talk more about it later".

oh I plan on asking him all this including the pay bump

If you have any interest in advancing your career to make more money, you never say no to things like this.

I would lean this way...I don't know how your industry works but I wouldn't be expecting a "big bump" in pay for being responsible for 1 person.

If your only interest in this decision is what you get out of it, then you are not good and/or ready handling that responsibility.....which means....you would make the perfect manager that companies continue to hire/promote!

If he is leaving it up to you i would imagine there is no pay bump. If you were ready manage people/team you would have been seeking it out. Pass on it because you are not going to do this poor sap any favors.

if i do end up taking on the role, ill change my attitude and do everything possible to be the best manager. I wouldnt want to ruin my minion's career.

Definitely be nice to him. He'll probably be your new boss when your current one moves on.

Ok i guess my question then to all you managers is... Does being a manager mean more work? Im kind of swamped as it is and thats why my boss pitched it to me. He knows how busy i am and he knows i get #### done. I know it comes with more responsibilities as I am responsible for another persons career.

Here is my philosophy when working with my direct reports: I am here to help build them as professionals (i have a range from seasoned people to newly hired college graduates), push them to be their best and kick them in the a$$ if needed. I am their biggest critic, cheerleader and champion. When it comes to developing talent, at times i have to push them which is where criticisms can come in. It is my job to ensure that they have interesting meaningful work to do and ensure that they are motivated to do it. And at the end of the day, it is my responsibility to get them promoted and paid. My team's work product flows through me so it is also a reflection of me. Obviously, i take managing a team very seriously.
