Belichick's statement about Fred Jackson (1 Viewer)

Patriots coach Bill Belichick raved about Fred Jackson again leading up to this week's game.

Belichick appreciates F-Jax more than the Bills coaches do, gushing about him every time the two teams meet. "He's been doing it his whole career," Belichick said. "There are really no weak points with that guy. He does everything well, runs hard, breaks tackles, good vision, good balance, catches the ball well, outstanding as a blocker, exceptional blitz pickup. ... He's really outstanding. He's one of the best backs in the league." Source: NESN.com Sep 22 - 8:57 PM

Think it means Billy is planning to game plan Jackson into a nonfactor like NE did with Gates last week? Seems strange to say "one of the best backs in the league"

What's up with this?

Obviously he is not one of the top backs in the league, but he is the perfect patriots runner, and we have to face him twice year.

Of course he's game planning for him. He's very good and been under rated for years (largely by his own team).

Pats homer. BB has mad love for Fred Jackson. You could cut and paste that statement from last six pre-Bills pressers. I think he game plans to stop him and he might on the ground but bet he has close to 100 receiving.

seconded --- just shows he's a smart dude.although, lavishing praise on opponents is pretty much belichick's schtick.action jackson's had some pretty good games against us, so I'm sure if bb could scheme him away he would've done so already --- I'd say start him if you've got him.if anybody gets schemed out it'd probably be stevie.pats are probably in nickel the whole game, and that's not really conducive to scheming out the run, not to mention chung's probably out, and we're a little thin on the backend to be loading anybody into the box.

It's coach speak nothing more nothing less. Coaches always talk up opponents. And BB's right, Jackson does everything well.
Obviously he is not one of the top backs in the league, but he is the perfect patriots runner, and we have to face him twice year.
I don't think it's obvious. He's a complete back and right now he's averaging 5.6 ypc and leading the league in rushing. He's not a household name, he plays in a small market, on a team that hasnt been very good, and hasn't always had the opportunities. But you can easily make the argument that RIGHT NOW, Fred Jackson is one of the best RBs in the NFL.

tampering at it's finest. When he's a free agent, which team will his agent call first?

NFL needs to initiate some rules that prohibit coaches from complimenting or just admit Bellichick is a mastermind that can work any system they put in front of him.

Regarding the coach speak sentence, I seriously doubt you listen to BB.BB likes to tell te truth about what he likes about his opponents. He usually chooses to talk about the weaknesses after the game (if Pats win) and usually uses the words "when we practiced this week", "we took advantage of the matchups", "when we saw something there" which I think he believes shows preparedness. As an example,he said similar things before the game against Chicago regarding Forte and Urlacher.

I do listen to BB. The general practice of talking up your opponent is "coach speak." And I added in that he was right or as you eluded BB likes to tell the truth. So not really sure what you're saying here.

So then, if it's the truth is it still coach speak? I think coach speak is normally fluff or BS when the coach is trying to throw off the media (Preseason coach speak) or make it seem like the opponent is much tougher than "we" the fans and media think. I think he just really appreciates Jackson's playing style as he always plays hard even though the team has sucked for his entire career, and that is a BB trait he loves, guys that always play hard and put team first. If you watched the completion of A Football Life last night, you saw him say when he was playing and early coaching you never had to worry or even think about a selfish player, everyone played with a team first attitude and gave 110%. It was all he knew, I think that line above everything else describes his style and expectations of players and if you don't fit that mold, you don't play for him long. This is another reason I think he is the best coach in the NFL today, he doesn't tolerate the BS it is his way or the highway.

Seems pretty straightforward to me. Simply paying a complement to a guy he obviously has a lot of respect for. Coachspeak is when Lou Holtz used to say his 30 point favorite Notre Dame team would be lucky to stay with Navy.

Fluff piece.
Exactly. Bill's game is to chose one thing he'll discuss with the media (because he's forced to talk to them), so he picks it and repeats it over and over. Does he genuinely appreciate Fred Jackson? Sure. Is the repetition indicative of anything? No. He's made a tight script and fed it to the press. This is sort of like feeding ground up bovine brains to cows. He's hoping they'll get Mad Media Disease and leave him alone.

Though it could mean he's actually concerned with Fitz and the Bills' passing game. Which he should be, with a pass D that made Chad Henne look like an All-Pro.

Why is that strange? Bill is smarter than every pundit. He knows the effective players. Remember when Miami didn't think Welker was worth more than a late round pick and Belichick said "I knew we couldn't cover him so I signed him to our side." He wasn't BSing then and he isn't here.

Fred Jackson is a lunch pail, hard-working, shut-up and do your job RB and is exactly the kind of player Belichick likes. He talks up opposing players like this often enough, so this isn't surprising.

I can't recall exactly, but wasn't it last year or 2 years ago, maybe their undefeated season when they played a winless team, and he said something like they where one of the best teams in the league?

BB dreams about FJax because in a BB system, Fred is the total package, a complete lunch pail type back with very little ego...BB would sign him tomorrow if Buffalo wanted to trade him away.

It is both... he's fluffing up the Bills, but he also loves Fred Jackson.... has been saying stuff like this about him for years

Yes, I don't see the two as mutually exclusive. Sometimes coach speak is fluff, sometimes it's an exaggeration, and sometimes it's the truth. It's coach speak to talk up an opponent but that doesnt mean there isn't truth in what a coach is saying.

In this instance, I think BB is engaging in coach speak talking up a specific player but I also believe he really does think this highly of Fred Jackson.

Fred is a good back and he may be one of the best in the league....put him on some of the better teams from last few years and he might get the stats that people use to determine best back in the league....stats aren't everything

Belichick loves hard workers, team oriented guys, and versatile players. Fred Jackson is all three.

Bill is also an independent thinker. He doesn't care what anyone else thinks about Fred Jackson. He's done his own evaluation, and he puts more stock on that than popular perceptions of Fred.

I don't remember that- unless you mean that Miami didn't think Welker was worth more than a late 2nd round pick- even then the Patriots gave up slightly more than that to get him.

Or like when he talked about Greg Lewis.
