Bench Gronk Until Hernandez Comes Back? (1 Viewer)

Rovers

I haven't watched the game again, but did read a report that Gronkowski was doing much more blocking against the Ravens than being sent out on passing routes. If this is indeed the case...he won't get targets simply because they want him to stay in to protect Brady. From what I casually observed in the game against the Ravens, I'm ready to bench him until I see him more involved in the passing game.

Any other thoughts? Even if Hernandez comes back, will Gronkowski still become more of a blocking TE, like he was against Baltimore? Pats homers? Opinions?

Guess who NE plays next week?

Buffalo

Guess what Gronkowski did to them last year?

7-109-2

8-108-2

End thread.

Hernandez played in that game, correct? Well, Hernandez won't play in this one. Continue thread, but thanks for your input.

I'm not saying start him or bench him, but it's a different situation -- only the names remain the same.edit: mcd + that o-line was a concern coming into teh season, but might have been exacerbated by balt d.if we're looking at last year, gronk was 5/87 against that balt d when it still had suggs.I wasn't interested in him at all based on where you'd draft him, even considering 18 td.whether you bench him pretty much depends on your situation -- I accidentally got him on an auction team along with hernandez, so I'll start him.hopefully, hernandez will be back in a couple weeks.

Yer a silly boy!Yes, I think I'm gonna start Celek over Gronk this week. With Suggs out, the Ravens pass rush isn't something you have to adjust to in keeping Gronkowski out of the passing game with blocking assignments. Niether is Buffalo, but... Lloyd is stealing targets from everyone.

Don't overthink this.

Buffalo is not the Balt D.

And I guarantee you K. Winslow does a decent Hernandez impersonation with the help of Bill B. by next Sunday.

Furthermore, you're not going to see Brady & Co. go shotgun / spread as much. They wont need to. Will be back to Ridley, a little more balance, etc.

Whoever played Gronk this week got a gift. Probably be his worst output all season. They'll figure it out. Poor Buffalo.

It's a very simple formula. If Tom Brady starts getting hit Gronk gets no fantasy love. He's to busy blocking. Happened all last year.

Better drop Ridley for Woodhead too. It was just part of the game plan I would assume. If it happens again, then I worry. But I wouldn't worry yet. Maybe I'll drop a trade offer to the Gronkn owner in my league just to see what he's feeling.

Um, did you watch the game? The Ravens were in Brady's face all night long. And that was with Gronk staying home to block.

Hernandez did not play in the first game in Orchard Park. Both Welker and Gronk torched the Bills that day. Start both with confidence.

Hernandez missed two games last year, during that time Gronk played the Bills and the Raiders.

He spent most of the Raiders game blocking because their pass rush was running a train on Brady. But he tore up the Bills and has always torn up the Bills.

Yup, pretty sure I will start Celek over Gronkowski next week. Either way, I'll bump the thread to gloat or eat crow. I just don't think the NE offense runs the samne way without Hernandez, as the Jets defense isn't the same without Revis (an exaggerated comparison, admittedly).

pretty sure that Winslow killed Gronkowski's value. Or maybe it was the other guy....not sure

How soon before we see the light pop above peoples heads when they realize that last year was not normal for TE production? Probably about the same time they realize that drafting a QB early wasn't a very good decision

He's a must start even if he's blocking more, the guy is as good of a bet as anyone to get a TD in any given week. Unless you have another great TE option you just don't sit him.

Several TE's are on pace for eye popping #'s.

lol... drafting gates in the 4th or hernandez in the 5th totally worked out...

Why do you think Hernandez has any affect on Gronkowski? Hernandez is hardly ever kept in to block so Gronk being asked to block last week wasn't because Hernandez was out.

Jimmy Graham, Vernon Davis, Tony Gonzalez, Dennis Pitta, Heath Miller and Martellus Bennett are all having outstanding seasons so far.

The number of times he stayed in to block is being a little exaggerated. It was more than usual, but he was still in the pattern a lot. Brady just didn't target him that much

Bench Gronk until Hernandaez gets back? Does Hernandez block instead of Gronk when he returns? The oline needs to perform better in order for Gronk to be more involved.

yikes they played the blitz happy Ravens on the road. We should probably rush out to pickup Woodhead and bench Ridley as well.

You may have a point.the New England two TE offense was partially successful because with 2 pass cathing TE's both on the field, one or both could go out for a pass, or block.Teams have to be very careful on Defense not to ignore either of them. They both cause matchup problems for Linebackers because of their speed. This does four things:1) it makes it less likely that they do double coverage on someone like Welker because these are players you cannot ignore coming out of the backfield.2) It makes it harder for the defense to read the play. a TE can block or run a pass route. in the old system either Gronk or Hernandez could choose to stay in and block, while the other slips out to catch a pass. With Hernandez gone, the defenses now know who to defend where before it was not so clear.3) it can open things up for the run if the linebackers play deep (extra blockers) 4) it opens up the deep ball more because the LB's play closer to the line.with only one TE it completely changes this dynamic.I'm sure Brady will adapt, but it will take a couple of games for this to happen.

That was just ONE game - he did fine the first two games and they won't need to block the Bills like they did the Ravens

the title of the thread is silly. Is anyone really going to bench Gronk in 2012?
I actually am in a situation where I think I am: I have Gonzalez (the #1 TE so far this year) and am also playing against Matt Ryan this week. Gonzalez has and can outscore Gronk and I also can absorb some of the Ryan attack.

Terrible post. You'd be crazy to bench Gronk. You'd be stupid to bench Gronk. Why in the world would you bench Gronk?Never bench Gronk.Don't even think about benching Gronk.Would you like to take a nap on that park bench, Gronk?

Posts like these frustrate a lot of the "expert" shark pool members, but I don't see why...I think posts like these are INVALUABLE, because they give a veteran FF player some insight into how owners of an underperforming player are feeling.

I hadn't even been thinking about gronk, but after reading this thread, I am going to put out some feelers and see if I can buy low. hopefully, the gronk owner in my league feels the same frustration!

If a Gronk owner is feeling that level of frustration after 1 poor statistical week vs the Ravens, he deserves to have someone come in and steal Gronk from him.

This. Against the ravens pass rush Gronk spent a lot of time blocking. I don't have the PFF subscription but for those that do I'm sure you'd see that he's a pretty decent blocker. I've even heard him quoted saying he enjoys doing it. Week 3 is not the norm. Nothing to see. Start gronk. :football:

The O line for the Pats sucks this year he was kept in blocking to keep Brady upright. It has little or nothing to do with Hernandez. Maybe you should see the thread about benching Fitzgerald or Mcfadden and ask those owners how it worked out for them last week, because Gronk is in the same class as both of those guys.
