Bryant released

By GEOFF HOBSON

aaWithout ever donning the No. 19 he received after giving up No. 81 to Terrell Owens, wide receiver Antonio Bryant was released by the Bengals Sunday in ending their most disappointing chapter ever in free agency.

Also released was hometown long snapper Mike Windt, the rookie free agent out of Elder High School and the University of Cincinnati. Safety Gibril Wilson was put on season-ending injured reserve with a torn ACL and MCL, but the Bengals still have to make a move with two more players to get to 75 players on the roster by Tuesday.

Even though the move has been speculated ever since the Bengals agreed with Terrell Owens July 27, the decision to cut Bryant is still stunning. And the fact they did it without reaching an injury settlement or at least putting him on season-ending injured reserve is even more surprising. It also indicates they must be totally convinced that Bryant's knee injury is serious enough that it was time to cut ties even though they gave him a $7 million signing bonus in March and signed him to a four-year deal.

It is believed that Bryant was due about another $1.5 million if he was on the roster Opening Day and a lesser figure if he'd been put on injured reserve. The Bengals went with the most decisive available option to them after he went to rehab following the first practice of training camp July 29, a practice he went through gingerly on the left knee he orginally injured last year in Tampa Bay.

As early as Thursday Bryant said he was optimistic he was "really close," to getting on the field and that he felt he didn't have to go to IR.

"Trust me,” Bryant said. “When I get on the field, the stuff you’ve been seeing on film and what some of the guys (have) been doing, I’m going to do a lot better. It’s going to look a lot different and I say that with much confidence because I know what I’m capable of doing. Check the film.”

I wonder if Bryant knew full well he was in bad shape when he signed the contract...kind of a rhetorical question.

Shipley now has to be the firm WR3 in the slot. Might not mean much at first but I like that position for him although he is not at all a Wes Welker type, very different but could produce. More dynasty hype/angle than anything.

TO obviously looks like a strong play as a WR3 for most owners now.

This news has been looming for awhile though so I'm not sure it really impacts the rankings or projections of too many of them.

For Bryant owners I would think this is good news. healthy or not he wasn't going to do much in Cincy. At least now if the knee ever gets right he might get on the field some where.

I think the gut reaction is to upgrade Ocho and TO, and while that may be true, I think the real winner here is Gresham.

As for Bryant, I'd imagine he'll end up somewhere as long as he can pass a physical. Maybe St. Louis, I think Atlanta would also be a good fit and I'd imagine washington could be in the mix. Or, he could sit out the year if his knee is bad enough.

I'm surprised it came to this though, its not often, even when justified, that a team will cut its losses so quickly.

1, Does this make Ocho a borderline WR1?

2. Does this make Owens a borderline WR2?

I drafted Ocho, very reluctantly, in the 7th round of a 10 team draft, and drafted Owens, just as reluctantly, in the 11th round. I don't like either player but they both seemed to have great value at those rounds. Now I'm hoping they were steals.

What sayeth the experts?

this really shouldnt have much impact on to and ocho. they were firmly implanted as the 1 and 2. its clears things up with caldwell and shipley tho. dont have to worry about bryant returning at some point later in the season and taking reps from them.

Am I the only person who sees really no fantasy change in all this. I kinda felt like the market had already factored in that Bryant would be pretty much a non-factor this year given the knee issues of late.

The only possible bump up could be to Bryant if he goes somewhere and actually plays.

Oh and I guess Shipley gets a mini-bump as there's no thread to his spot now and heck Jerome Simpson probably gets a micro-bump as he will assuredly stay employed.

Those are two great picks right there...the thing with Ocho is that he is always good and sometimes great, when he is great, people expect consistent awesomenes and then blow a 2nd or 3rd rounder when he is really worth a 4th rounder. Getting him in the seventh is outright theft, same with Owens.

:lmao: Shouldn't change anything from the last two months. Ocho is a low WR2, Owens a high WR3. Both are handcuffed by a terrible Carson Palmer, who in the past 18 months has become one of the worst 5 regular starters at QB in the NFL.

What? You're joking right? He's not elite anymore but at the very worst he is average. No way is he in the bottom 5.

I dont think it is relevant whether Bryant knew. if it went to court he would say "I'm not a doctor, I knew it was hurt, but had no idea to what extent"At the end of the day the Onus is upon the team to do a medical check to determine if there is any medical reason not to sign the player. As there was a pre-existing injury, it is clearly a case of buyer beware and the Bengals were not as careful as they should have been. Either way, the smart move was to cut ties before they became liable for additional roster bonuses, so I applaud the move.

This has no real effect on TO, Ocho, Shipley or Palmer. It may have an effect on Matt Jones. Does he stay now?

I would say that this means they are dedicated to TO which I was not sure of before this move. I had pictured TO having a decent first 5-6 weeks then start to see Bryant cut into his receptions as he came back from injury, possibly resulting in a TO blowup. Perhaps thankfully that might be avoided now that Bryant is gone.

I think Chad is being somewhat phony in his tweets and fb messages saying he is sad they cut Bryant. This means TO is going to be the number 2 all season and his room mate Shipley(I think) is the 3. All good news for Chad IMO. Either way, I wasn't stoked when they signed him and this only adds to the frustration. I think the real reason the offense hasn't been all it could be has more to do with who is calling plays. Last season was painfully predictable. Run Run pass. Brat needs to mix it up, and hopefully TO, if he does anything good by being the ego that he is, can put some heat on Brat to get the ball in the air earlier and more often. I think they would see benefits in both passing and running.

I think it's a positive for Shipley in dynasty formats. It could be that dropping Bryant could be strictly based on the status of his injury... or it could be that how Shipley has looked made them more willing to let him go.

But even if strictly the former... it's a good thing for a dynasty player to get a chance to get on the field and show what he can do. A year or two down the road it could affect the Bengals decision if they are having to decide whether to stick with Owens or whether Shipley can handle the #2 role.

This has no real effect on TO, Ocho, Shipley or Palmer. It may have an effect on Matt Jones. Does he stay now?
His odds slightly improve. They basically have 4 WRs going for the last 2 spots. Quan Cosby, Jerome Simpson, Briscoe, and Matt Jones. Cosby gives them special teams value the others don't. Simpson was a second round pick and has shown nothing over the past few years until this preseason. Briscoe is probably someone they would love to bring back to the practice squad. If Jones helped out on special teams, he would be a shoe-in.Also, Bryant's agent said the injury flared up in OTA's and minicamp in which Bryant participated. So the blame may not be entirely on the Bengals medical staff.

I think all the folks who are suggesting Bryant should be grabbed by this team or that team should stop and think for a second.

The Bengals had already PAID Bryant the vast majority of his money, and they didn't think he was worth the little bit that was left.

What we have here is a very banged up football player who has "played" for FIVE teams in a 7 year career. Each of the teams that got rid of him did so without batting an eye, and only one of them got a decent return on their investment (Tampa, for one year).

He's had exactly two 1000 yards seasons, and has never scored more than 7 TDs.

I'm not sure why any team would go out of their way to get this guy. Maybe next year, if he gets healthy I'd consider picking him up cheap (as an NFL team), but I can't see it happening this year.

So pissed about him, as I had obtained him in the off season. So for a dynasty team would you guys keep him on your team or drop him now and pick up someone with long term potential like emmanuel sanders or that TE from stl?
