Browns center LeCharles Bentley will undergo a physical Monday in New York with Dr. Russell Warren, the next step in his bid to return this season from a torn patella tendon and a severe staph infection.

"I think they're going to pass him," said Bentley's agent, Jonathan Feinsod. "Then, he can start preparing for the Steelers on Sept. 9."

If Bentley passes the physical, he'll most likely then have to pass the Browns' physical by team physician Dr. Tony Miniaci, and perhaps that of a third doctor. If he passes those, he'll report to camp with the rest of the veterans on Friday.

"We're hopeful that LeCharles can make it back," said Browns General Manager Phil Savage. "It's been a long, difficult road for him and we could get excited if he is truly able to return."

Bentley said last month that if he is cleared to practice, he'll most likely be limited at the start of camp and not participate in contact drills for a few weeks. But he has his sights set on the Sept. 9 home opener against Pittsburgh.

Bentley, who has been rehabbing in Phoenix, returned this week to attend the funeral of his father, Charles Milton, 85, who died Sunday after a brief illness. Bentley delivered the eulogy at his father's funeral on Friday.

He also met with coach Romeo Crennel and trainer Marty Lauzon at the Browns' facility on Thursday to discuss his comeback.

Bentley has undergone four surgeries since tearing his patella tendon last July on the first contact drill of the 2006 training camp, one to repair the tendon and three others related to the limb- and life-threatening staph infection that penetrated the joint a month later.

He was scheduled to undergo a fifth surgery on June 3 to have the tendon repaired, but Dr. Warren determined the surgery was unnecessary for Bentley to live a normal life. Monday, Warren will decide if it's strong enough to undergo the rigors of professional football.

I find this one hard to believe. I see him starting out on the PUP list.

If somehow he could actually play and be anywhere near as good as he was, this line would be lights out good.

This is a HUGE if though, just thinking hypothetically out loud here.

I would love to see him out there opening day.

I would even more love to see him make it through the first practice injury free!!

no doubt, and if somehow we can get Thomas and Quinn signed we might have some hope for a decent season.

I wish him the best. From his time in New Orleans, the buzz on the street about him was that he was a nice guy. I had a few friends that encountered him in different situations and all said good things about him.

This really would be good news for Bentley and the Brownies ... I hope he makes it all the way back... they'll need him!

And Dallas is rooting against them. But I agree that with Thomas, Bentley & Steinbach, this could be one of the better O-lines as the season unfolds. And that benefits Quinn too. So I can see them playing better as the season rolls along. 5-6 wins should happen with 7 doable.

Definitely rooting for LeCharles, but that it is going to be tough to come back from a two year layoff. Especially all the time he couldn't train while out with the injuries.

It'd be awesome if he could get back on the field, and become a superior player, or even a stud again. I think its more important that the Browns continue to focus on building the lines thru the draft, though. Look at the Steelers and Patriots , the two most dominant franchises in the AFC this decade. Look at their drafts. Look at the top 4 picks. They take a TON of linemen. Especially offensive linemen. You only need to start 5, but they grab closer to 10. They aren't expecting to hit on every single one. They are looking for depth. A pipeline of talent. If one guy goes down, they've got another fresh talented kid selected high that can step right in.

That's exactly how you do it. That's how you dominate the line of scrimmage. That's how you win.

So I'm not hanging my hopes on Bentley. I'm not even hanging my hopes on Steinbach and Thomas. They should keep drafting linemen.

Browns' Bentley cleared to return to football By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports WriterJuly 23, 2007CLEVELAND (AP) -- Browns center LeCharles Bentley was cleared by his surgeon to return to the playing field on Monday, another major step in his unexpected comeback from a career-threatening knee injury. "I passed it," Bentley said excitedly on the phone from New York. "I'm good to go." Bentley had a physical with Dr. Russell Warren, the New York Giants' team physician who performed two operations on the two-time Pro Bowler, whose injury was complicated by a staph infection. Bentley's first season with the Browns ended on the first play of contact in training camp last summer when he tore the patellar tendon in his left knee. Later, his injury became infected so severely that Bentley said it nearly killed him and doctors had considered amputation of his leg. Bentley said he will return to Arizona, where he has spent the past several months rehabbing his injury. He plans to be back in Cleveland on Thursday to report for training camp. Bentley will likely have to pass a team physical before the Browns allow him back on the field. "That really doesn't matter to me," said Bentley, who signed a six-year, $36 million contract with the Browns in March 2006. "The top doctor in the field has told me that I'm OK. I've just got to keep making progress. "The last person to go into my knee says I'm OK, and that's good enough for me." Browns general manager Phil Savage was not immediately available for comment. Bentley underwent four operations after injuring his knee. The first was to repair the torn tendon and the other three were to fix damage caused by the staph infection, which led to two long hospital stays for the 27-year-old. He was scheduled to have a fifth procedure on the knee in June, but Bentley said Warren decided against it because of how much progress the 6-foot-2, 310-pounder was making. Before Bentley called coach Romeo Crennel late last month and told him he planned to report to training camp, the Browns weren't sure if he would ever play for them again. The club has handled Bentley's situation delicately in the past few months, often deferring questions to the player and his representatives.

That's awesome. I remember first hearing about this possibility the day of the Draft. My buddy lives in the Cleveland area and said that there was some talk on the sports radio that it was a possibility. Nobody outside of the area seemed to believe it. I remember trying to convince Dodds that the Browns could end up actually having a really good offensive line and be a sleeper offense.

Good for Bentley. He took somewhat of a home team discount to play for the team that he always wanted to play for and ended up getting hurt on the first day of practice. I hope that he makes it all the way back and plays well for them this season. If he makes it back as a starter, the Browns are going to sell a ridiculous number of his jerseys.

Where does that leave Fraley? Does he end up as the RG then?

This can only be good news for the Browns, but I hope they don't rush him back too soon. As a guy with Braylon Edwards on my team who hopes BE can do well, but isn't relying on him as a WR1 or WR2, I would love to see this team's O take off. With a potential beast in Jamal behind the line (if healthy) they could force teams to stack the box and leave 1 on 1 coverage downfield allowing the QB (whomever that may be) to take more high percentage passes and should increase the YAC as there will be less defenders in the secondary....

The game is won and lost at the line of scrimmage. First rule of football.

for whatever its worth, FFI i believe reported he be out the whole season whole season. Its a FF mag, so who knows? Even so thats a major injury to come back from. Dont expect a pre-injusry performance THIS year.

Bentley is cleared but I'm sure he'll be eased into things. He did miss an entire season and he's coming off a very serious injury. A lil rusty is a gross understatement. Then how much he has come back and how durable he'll be are other questions not to mention cohesion along the line which should see a lengthy holdout by Joe Thomas according to a report from John Clayton. I'm happy for La Chuck and the Browns but realistically temper enthusiasm till Joe T and co are working together as a unit. Couldn't be happier for Bently though. From every report this guy is a class act and is great for the community. The news also underscores why the Browns paid him his bonus this off-season. Standup move by the Browns front office apparently has been rewarded.
