Best albums of 2013 (1 Viewer)

I really despise Chvrches, but I can't take my eyes off the chick. And it's not like she's an especially good singer.
She's adorable. I want to marry her. Why despise though? Because they're on MTV now?
I can't stand the sound. I like physical resonance. I can count the digi music artists I like on one hand and three of them are Eno. However, I am a big fan of looking at that little elf.
That doesn't make any sense.

I think you want to like them, but you won't let yourself like them. You don't always have to be the cool guy you know.
What about that doesn't make any sense? And I can assure you that I am not the cool guy. Have you seen my post count here?

I keep coming back to John Murry's "The Graceless Age". I think that made some album lists from last year, but got released in the US in 2013. Really good album.

There's usually only a few rap albums I like a year and Danny Brown is about the only guy I was excited to hear this summer, but Wale's The Gifted is 4 stars. F this Max Miller talk, Wale is the the album to put on.

I loved his old mixtapes, but his MMG stuff has been junk. I'm afraid to listen. :scared:

I have never hyped a Wale album before, but this is the best rap album I've heard in 2013.

My most anticipated album of the year finally has a release date. Cant wait.

:moneybag: Those guys totally are the business. I'm due for a show.
Youre a Cali guy, correct? I dont think they've toured the west coast much, if at all, but they havent announced tour dates yet for the new album, and considering they play a lot of shows, I have a feeling this is the album they have an extensive tour all over the country and not just the northeast and east coast.

Theyre playing a small festival in upstate VA on july 3rd, Im planning on going to that, and I actually just saw them june 12th. Paid $45 for pit tickets at a amphitheater to see them open for The Lumineers and Cold War Kids. CWK were solid and rocked more than I expected, Im probably going to start listening to them again. J Roddy was great, as usual. I decided to leave before The Lumineers played and thoroughly enjoyed not hitting any traffic as I left!

I bet there's a lot of sweet clunge at Lumineers shows.

If clunge is what Im assuming it is, yes there was plenty of underage clunge, if youre into that sort of thing and getting arrested.

There was also people telling me how could I be leaving when I was, the lumineers are on the disney channel!!

I apologize for being Mac Miller's free promoter, I probably wont listen to that album ever again after a couple months, but I do think its solid. I'll check out that Wale album, I havent really listened to him much but thought he was a decent lyricist of what Ive heard. Thanks for the rec. I was huge on hip hop about 5 years ago, but its so hard to find the real great albums that get released I think thats why I started to lose interest, at least on the new stuff. A lot of diggin in the crates basically, if you will.

Ive barely heard anything this year hip hop wise, but I love the First Light - Fallacy Fantasy album, its some of the Hiero crew. Definitely give it a listen, it will make up for my Mac Miller recommendation. I also stumbled upon another album Spectac & Shakim - For The People. Its pretty good.

I'm in the DC area, Kenny.
Ah, well that makes sense as to how youre familiar with them then. Since youre in the area, like I said theyre playing upstate VA on wednesday and theyre playing in WVa in August. Im sure theyll have Baltimore and DC dates in September or October though for the new album.

Theyre my favorite band to see live, and depending on this new album, maybe my favorite band period.

He lives in Richmond, so a DC club date can't be too far off.

I've really like most of the hip hop that has been released this summer, even Mac Miller has grown on me. Killer Mike/El-P, Wale, Action Bronson and J. Cole are all good. Haven't heard the new Jay Z yet tho.

I gave that Wale a listen a couple weeks ago when you recommended it. Sounded like pretty much all mainstream rap these days to me, didnt grab me at all . Highlights were that song Vanity (where he samples that song from Donnie Darko) and Wiz Khalifa's verse on 1 of the later songs. While Ive been aware of him for awhile, never really listened to Wale. I thought he was supposed to be a good lyricist, which maybe he is on his early stuff, but that didnt come across on this album to me.

I'll have to check out the Action Bronson. I have the Dr. Lecter album, love it, but for whatever reason havent got any of his other albums. Ironically I think his song on Mac Miller's album is 1 of the weakest on it.

El-P is hit or miss for me but I'll probably get around to that sometime.

After one of my typical dry periods with music, I think I'm getting back into the fold. I just ran through this entire thread from the start. By my count, I've only listened to 16 :bag: 2013 albums so far. I now have a list of 37 more albums to listen to....

And I listened to Mac Miller today. I was surprisingly impressed with it, though I'm not sure how well it will hold up for me. The production was top-notch and it was a welcome break from the dance-rap that's all the rage these days. I don't really love his delivery, but the production was good enough to carry it, I think. Some of the more introspective tracks in the middle of the album were better than some of the more-hyped crap that the younger garbage-rap crowd would love. That track with Action Bronson was pretty solid.

I know most people are meh on Wale, but I really like it. I've had it on blast the last couple weekends and it just felt right.

Rare Chandeliers and Blue Chips are both pretty ####### amazing.

This band called Melt Yourself Down plays some pretty badass world/jazz/rock fusion, imo. They only got 2 songs listed there, both are free to download, don't know much else about them.
Just stumbled across this album on Spotify - couple tracks in so far and really digging it*.

First thought was, "I bet this was mentioned in that thread"...

(*disclaimer: I've been drinking since noon)

The music's not bad either

I've heard a lot of chick rock I like lately. Bosnian Rainbows (feat that workaholic Omar Rodriguez Lopez), the previously mentioned Speedy Ortiz, and also Sons of Hippies.

There's some PJ Harvey knockoffery going about, and I'm not complaining

Note to self: listen to all of these

:inmywheelhouse:

A few albums I listened to over the weekend that I didnt realize I was familiar with a song on each that I had been hearing on the radio....

Twenty One Pilots - Vessel...you may have heard their song Holding On To You. Although not really something I typically listen to, I thought this album was good. Id probably say I can appreciate it more than I thoroughly enjoyed it. A little too electronic/synthy for me at times though, and the rapping can feel forced. I thought some of the highlights and better songs were when the music was simpler, or not too convoluted for its own good. Some people here would definitely dig this more than I did.

The Neighbourhood - I Love You...you may have heard their song Sweater Weather. Another sound that really isnt my wheelhouse, but after 1 listen I was impressed with this album. Considering the single, this surprised me musically with its depth and atmospheric sounds. Really dug the first track, but most of the better ones are after Sweater Weather. My favorite of these 3 albums.

The Mowgli's - Waiting for the Dawn...you may have heard their song San Francisco. Good for what it is, a nice lighthearted summer album. A little forgettable I think, for the most part. Reminiscent of Lumineers and Of Monsters and Men at times, but not so serious and whiny. You power pop guys might like this.

...I also gave the Jagwar Ma a listen. Interesting sound, but it needs a couple more less intoxicated spins from me to come to an appropriate conclusion.
