I graduated HS in 2000 and Daft Punk was huge in HS and college. They were one of the few groups that had total crossover appeal and made for a great party soundtrack. The raver druggies liked it, chicks found it danceable enough, everyone found it catchy enough, it just seemed to work. Also Fatboy Slim, that stuff got heavy play as well.

Slowly but surely removing all talent from music, one Pitchfork darling at a time. Don't get me wrong, I get wanting to take ecstasy and dance for 10 hours to grooves that go on and on and on...that was pretty much my life in SF from 1996 to 2000. But let's not confuse this with music.
A GBV zealot such as yourself might like Private Airplane by Connections.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Frank Zappa said the same thing about music in the '80s.

Who had no idea how to write a decent tune.

Well, he wasn't a pop songwriter, if that's what you mean.

Well you, my friend, are wrong on the internet.

Lemme guess, Don Van Vliet couldn't write either?  He and Frank were certainly no Tame Impala or Japandroids when it came to composing prowess, but I mean c'mon, they had a little game.

daft punk>It's been like a decade right? I hear their songs in commercials constantly. Lots if time for people to jump on the bus. Plus it's easily accessible. Who doesn't shake their ### to it.

Please keep us posted on any other albums that won't have any music on them. TIA.

The new Daft Punk album was leaked and is on Grooveshark.Different than what I was expecting. I think it'll take a few listens to grow on people, but I'm liking it the more I listen to it.
Sucks.

Not sure why they threw their award-winning formula in the trash and then took a dump on it for good measure, but this album is an abortion of sound... and I REALLY like daft punk.

Pretty clear they gave their regular fans the finger.

Basically after the tron soundtrack which was boring, and this, they are dead to me until they prove otherwise.

Is Trouble Will Find Me better or worse than High Violet? HV is the only The National I have and I liked it but didn't love it. I'm on the fence if I want to purchase something else by them. (Yes, I still actually purchase music.)

ps new board sux

Jenny Hval (singer songwriter)

Not sure I like it but it's quite different from what's out there now a days.

Agreed re: Boxer and Alligator. The latter is my favorite National album, with Boxer a close 2nd. I like HV and TWFM a lot but they're not as good.

Wait, did someone really say that Zappa was not a good songwriter? Okay, I know he could be really silly (and plenty of those non-serious songs are good), but when the man wanted to write some serious tunes, he did a damn good job most of the time.

Anyway, the best albums I have heard so far this year are:

Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing (this will be nearly impossible to top)

The Flaming Lips - The Terror

David Bowie - The Next Day

The Terror is ####ing incredible. Really was blown away seeing the Embryonic material performed live and I'm very much looking forward to seeing this material played live. The Lips are on a tear.

Really?Whats wrong with Giorgio, Lose Yourself to Dance and Contact? Giorgio is just amazing imo its all over the place, Lose Yourself I think best represents the album and Contact is just intense - 5 minute crescendo.Get Lucky and Doin' It Right are above average, not a huge fan of either though. Legacy had some good tracks too, Derezzed, End of Line, Solar Sailer and Fall to name a few. Granted it was a soundtrack and had like 30 tracks, not all of them are gonna be good.I doubt they will ever top Discovery. I mean, they made a musical film based on it for god sakes.

Liking Trouble Will Find Me so far. Both Boxer and High Violet took at least a dozen listens before I really liked them. This new one sounds most like High Violet. Just glad they didn't go disco or new wave on us.

The Lone Bellow debut drops January 22nd. From ATL, now based in Brooklyn.

I saw them several times in 2012 (much of the year they went by Zach Williams and the Bellow). Acoustic trio with mandolin and slide guitar sound.

songs:

Playing this on Leno tonight, 4 months after being on Conan.

They were touring with Brandi Carlile, now opening for Robert Plant. Tons of festivals on tap: Clearwater, Taste of Chicago, Celebrate Brooklyn, Newport Folk, Outside Lands, Four Corners Folk, Bumbershoot, Fresh Grass, Austin City Limits. Who knows if they gain wide appeal, pop/commercial success is so friggin' random. They're definitely getting plenty of exposure.

Hey fbgs, I have been searching through the past music threads and thought this would be he best locations to ask a little help here. I never rally listened to music much until a few years ago mainly because of very poor radio reception, terrible internet, so think of me as if I don't know anything. I was wondering if you guys could help me out and recommend some albums or songs that I may like. Here are some albums that I have bought and really enjoy: The Killers - Hot Fuss, The Strokes - Is This It, Band of Skulls - Baby Darling Doll Face Honey. It doesn't have to stay in these genres, as I do enjoy most everything. My main problem is that basically everything that is presented in this thread and past iterations I have never heard of and no clue how they sound, so I'm looking for a little perspective here. Thanks guys.

Seems like it's been awhile since you've dipped your ears into the music pool. These 5 albums are a start

The Black Keys- Brothers

Father Johny Misty- Fear Fun

If your internet's improved, try Pandora. Create a channel based on one of the bands you mentioned.

Thanks, I'll give them a listen. I have been into to recent music but those were my favorites that I have found as a whole. One recent album that has been getting more play from me has been The Heist - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and then random songs.

I would also add Tame Impala's Innerspeaker to that list.

The end of See the Leaves live was one of the most absurdly awesome things I've ever seen.

You Lust will be a total mind#### if they decide to play that whole thing live.

I am way out of the loop on music from the past few months, gotta dig back into this thread, but I just have to say that I'm really, really digging this Vampire Weekend record. Not that that should surprise anyone, given my taste in music. But yeah. I like it a lot.

I just listened to it again this morning in its entirety. It is good and I like it, but I keep expecting a peppy VW tune to be in there that never comes.
