Best albums of 2013 (2 Viewers)

Parquet Courts' Light Up Gold is great and only about half as good as watching them live.

The Cell Phones' Get You Alone is OMG crazy great and only about half as good as watching them live. "Heavy Flow" and "West Coast" are singles up there with "Sonic Reducer" and "Doris". Best newish band I've heard in a while. Can't wait to see them play later this month.

So far 2013 shaping up to be a very good year (as expected; for some reason I always like odd years best  )

Really liking:

Portugal. The Man

Daft Punk

Local Natives

Vampire Weekend

The National

Frightened Rabbit

Foxygen

Somewhat good:

Phoenix

Disclosure

Not digging at all:

Deerhunter

Still a host yet to explore. Spotify @$9.99 a month is an incredible bargain.

I've already got 15 tunes in a 2013 best of and we're not halfway through the year.

Open to suggestions on your favorite tunes

awesome playlist. Thanks!

I like the new Portugal. The Man but In The Mountain In The Cloud was my favorite album of 2011 and after at least a handful of listens I just cant say Evil Friends is as strong. After going back to American Ghetto and The Satanic Satanist, Evil Friends has a good chance to be my 2nd favorite of theirs. ITMTCloud is just a masterpiece to me. I think the biggest thing to me is Evil Friends starts out slow. I like Plastic Soldiers but not as an opener, Creep In A T-Shirt is one my least favorite on the album, and the title track doesnt grab me as much as most of the rest of the album either. It really hits its stride at Modern Jesus and takes off from there to me at this point, but that may change in due time.

New QOTSA is good but I gotta give it more listens.

Also an album I havent seen mentioned in here is Houndmouth's debut From the Hills Below the City. I like it, but they just strike me as a poor man's Felice Brothers and I have a little trouble buying into them.

Has anyone heard the Valerie June album yet? I heard "You Can't be Told" on XPN this morning, I liked it.

The new Sabbath album is good.
I was pretty impressed by what Rick Rubin was able to do with those wash-ups Metallica, but he's outdone himself here.
Yeah, he did a good job. I've heard complaints that he put Ozzy too up front in the mix, but the fact that he doesn't sound like he has a mouth full of marbles is amazing. For me, Iommi makes this album. Just great guitar work by him. He shreds throughout, but Damaged Soul is inspired. Great song.

Deafheaven- "Sunbather"....HFS does this rock. I don't normally like singers that just scream and growl, but the band is so good, I actually am digging it.

New QOTSA is a joke IMO. Couple good hooks, but the rest of the album is hurting...
I love the entire album. Wanna fight?
Not really... new Charles Bradley doesn't quite measure up to his previous one, unfortunately. Was really looking forward to it too...
I totally agree on QOTSA, just a boring album. However,Charles Bradley album is real nice. It isn't a genre I always listen to, but he nailed it IMO.

Completely agree with what you said about the beginning of Evil Friends. I usually skip over Plastic Soldiers. Everything from Modern Jesus and on is pretty top notch though. I had the same experience with The National's new album as well. First two tracks didn't really hook me but I absolutely love everything else starting with Don't Swallow The Cap.

Cool, glad you liked it. Most of those albums are pretty good as well. Especially, Local Natives, FIDLAR, Steve Mason and Phosphprescent.

So between Foxygen or Avett Brothers, who should I go see at Firefly tomorrow? I probably can't see both since they are playing at the same time.

I've been picking through some of the new Mac Miller this week. Not sure if I'm there with him yet, but he's an interesting cat.
Listened to both of these today. I thought the Kanye album was awful, I cut myself off before the last song or 2 it was so bad.

I think the Mac Miller album is phenomenal, listened twice today. Ive only heard a handful of his songs previously, but it seems to me like he took the next step with this album. Its hard to not think of Kendrick Lamar or Frank Ocean's albums from last year, when listening to Watching Movies WIth the Sound Off. Popular rap has left me cold for about a decade, but maybe with these youngin's its making a comeback, with good music.

Yeezus = meh city.

I'm going to give it a second listen now. I just couldn't get past the fact it was Mac Miller the first time.

2013 has been a very good year for female singer-songwriters.

I usually like listening to the College Rock station on DirecTV (sonictap) but I'll inevitably hear a song and then later can't remember what it was. Pisses me off. Anyway, I"m open to suggestions on internet radio I can stream to a smartphone that I can see the last dozen or so songs that played. Don't like Pandora and haven't found a Spotify radio station like SonicTap's College Rock or Sirius XMU.

Jason Isbell's new album Southeastern is great. I never really checked out his solo stuff, I guess mostly because I could never get into the Drive By Truckers, but Ive listened to this album almost 10 times this week. Probably a little slow for some of you, too country-ish, but worth checking out at least.

Cover Me Up

Live Oak

Elephant

Jason Isbell >>>>>>> Drive By Truckers.

KP - have you listened to "A Blessing and a Curse" by the DBT's? It's the one Isbell was the biggest part of and my favourite of theirs as a result.

I probably havent. I was considering going to a festival in May, and DBTs were playing it so I started checking them out again, starting with their oldest albums. I dont think I made it to that album, but I'll give it a listen.

Have you listened to this new Isbell album yet?

Crazy talk.

Have you ever heard Decoration Day? The Dirty South? His songs on ABAAC are terrible, imo. They sink the record, making it their worst by a large margin. And I'm a big fan. I've gotten drunk with Jason a few times and attended the wedding of his 400 Unit guitar player. Big fan. But those songs are painful and stick out like sore thumbs next to Space City, Feb 14th and Wednesday.

I wont get into a DBT's dispute, but have you listened to Isbell's new one, Apple Jack?
Yeah, I like it a lot. Live Oak is one of my favorites he's written. Tried to listen to the NPR interview last week, but his wife wouldn't let him talk and I ended up shutting it off. He seems to be happy. Which is obviously great.

The biggest thing that I think Pat and Cooley have much more than Jason that I like is that they write about real life events and craft songs out of these stories that immediately stand up and resonate. It's like there is no buffer there between them, the listener, and the story. Jason so often has written about things he's imagined up and/or is bending over backwards to make a pop song out of. He's much more vulnerable to cliche. Like I can hear the effort. Less so lately. But Cooley and Patterson write eternally great stuff like they're falling off a log. It sounds so effortless, timeless and relevant. Natural. They also have better songs. Lots more better songs.

For me its their best since rated R. Always interesting how subjective music is.
After more listens, I like it but I dunno. Rated R is my favorite of theirs. I think the new one starts out strong, but after track 3 fades a bit, and picks up at the end. At this point, Id say I prefer the Them Crooked Vultures album.
