Some tunes from 2013 that I really enjoyedSo far 2013 shaping up to be a very good year (as expected; for some reason I always like odd years best)
Really liking:
Portugal. The Man
Daft Punk
Local Natives
Vampire Weekend
The National
Frightened Rabbit
Foxygen
Somewhat good:
Phoenix
Disclosure
Not digging at all:
Deerhunter
Still a host yet to explore. Spotify @$9.99 a month is an incredible bargain.
I've already got 15 tunes in a 2013 best of and we're not halfway through the year.

I was pretty impressed by what Rick Rubin was able to do with those wash-ups Metallica, but he's outdone himself here. The new Sabbath album is good.
I love the entire album. Wanna fight?New QOTSA is a joke IMO. Couple good hooks, but the rest of the album is hurting...
Yeah, he did a good job. I've heard complaints that he put Ozzy too up front in the mix, but the fact that he doesn't sound like he has a mouth full of marbles is amazing. For me, Iommi makes this album. Just great guitar work by him. He shreds throughout, but Damaged Soul is inspired. Great song.JZilla said:I was pretty impressed by what Rick Rubin was able to do with those wash-ups Metallica, but he's outdone himself here. The new Sabbath album is good.
Not really...I love the entire album. Wanna fight?New QOTSA is a joke IMO. Couple good hooks, but the rest of the album is hurting...
I totally agree on QOTSA, just a boring album. However,Charles Bradley album is real nice. It isn't a genre I always listen to, but he nailed it IMO.Not really... new Charles Bradley doesn't quite measure up to his previous one, unfortunately. Was really looking forward to it too...I love the entire album. Wanna fight?New QOTSA is a joke IMO. Couple good hooks, but the rest of the album is hurting...
Completely agree with what you said about the beginning of Evil Friends. I usually skip over Plastic Soldiers. Everything from Modern Jesus and on is pretty top notch though. I had the same experience with The National's new album as well. First two tracks didn't really hook me but I absolutely love everything else starting with Don't Swallow The Cap.I like the new Portugal. The Man but In The Mountain In The Cloud was my favorite album of 2011 and after at least a handful of listens I just cant say Evil Friends is as strong. After going back to American Ghetto and The Satanic Satanist, Evil Friends has a good chance to be my 2nd favorite of theirs. ITMTCloud is just a masterpiece to me. I think the biggest thing to me is Evil Friends starts out slow. I like Plastic Soldiers but not as an opener, Creep In A T-Shirt is one my least favorite on the album, and the title track doesnt grab me as much as most of the rest of the album either. It really hits its stride at Modern Jesus and takes off from there to me at this point, but that may change in due time.
Almost reminds me of Astral Weeks for some reason.Laura Marling is pretty impressive. Major grower for me.![]()
Thanks for posting. I haven't heard much of SB since 'Snow'. I'll have to check out the new CD.For fans of progressive rock, Spock's Beard new CD, Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep, is really good, and they even did a video for Submerged:

If that song were by a name band, that song could be really popular.
Id highly recommend starting with Here's To Taking It Easy because it is the most similar to Muchacho and arguably his best, but I also love Pride.Phosphorescent album is awesome. Off to explore their back catalog....
I've been picking through some of the new Mac Miller this week. Not sure if I'm there with him yet, but he's an interesting cat.Major yawner.Yeezus = meh city.

Foxygen. Always great to see a band when they're on the rise.So between Foxygen or Avett Brothers, who should I go see at Firefly tomorrow? I probably can't see both since they are playing at the same time.
Listened to both of these today. I thought the Kanye album was awful, I cut myself off before the last song or 2 it was so bad.I've been picking through some of the new Mac Miller this week. Not sure if I'm there with him yet, but he's an interesting cat.Major yawner.Yeezus = meh city.
I'm going to give it a second listen now. I just couldn't get past the fact it was Mac Miller the first time.Listened to both of these today. I think the Mac Miller album is phenomenal, listened twice today. Ive only heard a handful of his songs previously, but it seems to me like he took the next step with this album. Its hard to not think of Kendrick Lamar or Frank Ocean's albums from last year, when listening to Watching Movies WIth the Sound Off. Popular rap has left me cold for about a decade, but maybe with these youngin's its making a comeback, with good music.
I probably havent. I was considering going to a festival in May, and DBTs were playing it so I started checking them out again, starting with their oldest albums. I dont think I made it to that album, but I'll give it a listen.Jason Isbell >>>>>>> Drive By Truckers.
KP - have you listened to "A Blessing and a Curse" by the DBT's? It's the one Isbell was the biggest part of and my favourite of theirs as a result.
Crazy talk.Jason Isbell >>>>>>> Drive By Truckers.

Yeah, I like it a lot. Live Oak is one of my favorites he's written. Tried to listen to the NPR interview last week, but his wife wouldn't let him talk and I ended up shutting it off. He seems to be happy. Which is obviously great.I wont get into a DBT's dispute, but have you listened to Isbell's new one, Apple Jack?
For me its their best since rated R. Always interesting how subjective music is.New QOTSA is a joke IMO. Couple good hooks, but the rest of the album is hurting...
After more listens, I like it but I dunno. Rated R is my favorite of theirs. I think the new one starts out strong, but after track 3 fades a bit, and picks up at the end. At this point, Id say I prefer the Them Crooked Vultures album. For me its their best since rated R. Always interesting how subjective music is.New QOTSA is a joke IMO. Couple good hooks, but the rest of the album is hurting...
