Best albums of 2013 (1 Viewer)

New QOTSA is a joke IMO. Couple good hooks, but the rest of the album is hurting...
For me its their best since rated R. Always interesting how subjective music is.
need to respin didn't hook me on first few listens
For me, Auto Pilot > Better Living Through Chemistry is an all timer
Auto pilot rules. Oliveri wrote it for the dwarves but it wound up being a queens tune instead.Gotta add leg of lamb and monsters in the parasol to that run of songs.

Better living is probably hommes most creative tune. Love that riff that disappears then reappears in the right channel moves to the left channel then peaks in stereo.

Was at Solid Sound music festival this weekend... Little dust up with Foxygen, not too big a deal though

http://blogs.thetranscript.com/arts/2013/06/23/solid-sound-scandals/

Tweedy made a few jokes about them not getting invited back next year. I will say we were all certain that the lead singer of Foxygen had more than alcohol flowing through his system
Having seen them before live where they had weird things happen onstage, and following their live "freakouts" online, I'm kind of wondering if the lead singer isn't doing some sort of Andy Kaufman/Joaquin Phoenix performance art schtick. The lead singer, Sam France is/was an actor, who wrote and played the lead Peter Apple in a movie called The Buffalo Son. Wouldn't put it past him to be doing some performance art thing. Either that or he likes his drugs.

'The Buffalo Son' chronicles the adventures of Peter Apple, a teenage boy who awakes in the middle of an Arizona desert road with complete head trauma-induced amnesia. With no family, proof of birth, or social security number, the sweet, naive Peter gains relative national fame for his story and spontaneous poetry. But he is eventually adopted as a prophet and 'flawless judge of this World' by the strange beat poets and art fiends in his foster family's neighborhood. Peter slowly morphs into a cocky, careless, rockstar-like hero while becoming a target of jealousy and hatred at his high school. As his memory begins to return, Peter begins to question the roles he has been assigned in this colorful, funny and eerie take on the American dream.

It may not be the best album of the year, but Jim James is definitely my most listened to. Mikal Cronin is likely second.

Just tried it out on Spotify...this is "Regions of Light"? Or is there another one? Boy...Regions is sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.

It is. I'm a sucker for the reverb or something. The album didn't grab me at first but really grew on me before long.

Grew on the new wife also. She walked down the aisle (such as it was) to his song "A New Life".

I am very conflicted on Yeezus. I find it better than Late Reg and 808s but I thought both of those albums were generally terrible. Yeezus isn't better than College Dropout or MBDTF which are both classics, IMO. I like the minimalist feel of Yeezus but the post-industrial thing really just doesn't do it for me. I've also found that I don't think Kanye can carry a great album solo from a vocalist standpoint. No doubt he's a great producer, one of the best, but Dropout and MBDTF were both very heavy on guest vocals and it worked. Yeezus seems to me on my first listens like it's all Kanye....and while I think Kanye is a decent rapper, he leaves a lot to be desired when held up against other strong vocalists.

For fans of progressive rock, Spock's Beard new CD, Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep, is really good, and they even did a video for Submerged:

If that song were by a name band, that song could be really popular.
Thanks for posting. I haven't heard much of SB since 'Snow'. I'll have to check out the new CD.
You should. It is probably their 2nd best album since Neal Morse's departure (behind the terrific X). Songs like Waiting for Me, Something Very Strange, I Know Your Secret and A Treasure Abandoned are all dynamite.

Giving the Mac Miller a proper spin now, honestly I have heard way worse, and I don't typically like the drugged-out sound.
As I said the other day, Id only heard a handful of his songs before this, and he struck me as mostly a joke, a gimmick rapper if you will, who could make a catchy song. I think this album is pretty strong, and really most of the weakest songs are the ones with guest appearances. I think the biggest thing holding him back from widely getting praised for this album is people listening with a bias or pre-determined opinion of his previous work/his persona which I did to a degree, but he changed those thoughts pretty quick.

I ####### love drugged-out music. JFC that guy sucks.

Should I actually listen to Mac Miller? Really?
#1 I dont think Apple Jack even listens to rap/hip hop, so in this instance...

#2 While the album has some spacey songs, it has bangers as well. Its not really drugged out, the start of the album sort of is

#3 Listen to it with an open mind. Forget the name. If youre considering the Kanye album even decent, I dont see how you could call this garbage. Yeezus sounded like noise to me, I think Mac Miller's has some substance

Just listened to a bunch of Mac Miller. Really don't like it. SOunds like most else that is on the radio this day... slow rapping, flat voice, emphasis on extended rhyming with one 'sound' (went to the stars, need a new garage I got so many cars, and I love the bars, never been to China that #### is fars, and now I'm baaared).

Maybe I am outta touch.

This is the same Mac Miller on the Ariana Grande song? Yeah I cant imagine him being any good. But Ill give it a listen. WTH not?

Pop Hip Hop meshed together is the trendy new thing among top 40 music.

Surprised the Yeah Yeah Yeahs aren't getting more run in here. Mosquito improves with each listening...but maybe that's a gut reaction to seeing them at First Avenue on Monday.

I'm a fan of Mosquito even though I didn't really respond to the last album. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were great live at Firefly. I also caught Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, Capital Cities, Avett Brothers, Foxygen, Ben Harper, Tom Petty, Chili Peppers, Twenty One pilots and Foster the People. All were great except Passion Pit (singer lost his voice) and Foxygen who were so so IMHO. Twenty One Pilots was the discovery of the festival for me. I'd never really heard of them but they put on a great show.

CHVRCHES are gaining some serious momentum here.
Link?
They're playing a 3000 seat hall here in November. Pretty good for not having a proper album out.
Was really surprised when I saw them in Dallas that they sold out a ~1000ish capacity venue. Was a great show though. Looks like they're coming back through town later this fall and are playing at an even larger place. Kinda crazy.

Recover is apparently getting play on MTV. I wasn't aware they even showed music anymore, but there you go. It's like the second coming of Yaz.

I don't know/remember what the current line on Fall Out Boy is but the new album is really good. I've always liked them but been annoyed by the bass-player and the ugly-but-thin Simpson chick. But now that that has subsided I think I'm fine with listening to them again.

hmmm...might just have to grab a pair of tickets to their First Avenue show based on this hype. Don't know much about them...to Spotify!

Fall Out Boy is much more enjoyable than Imagine Dragons, imo.

You've got a real Sophie's Choice on your hands there.

The Mac Miller seems to be the surprising hit from an artist most have written off, but to me Fall Out Boy fits that catagory much more. It's a fun rock album.

I really despise Chvrches, but I can't take my eyes off the chick. And it's not like she's an especially good singer.
She's adorable. I want to marry her. Why despise though? Because they're on MTV now?
I can't stand the sound. I like physical resonance. I can count the digi music artists I like on one hand and three of them are Eno. However, I am a big fan of looking at that little elf.

That doesn't make any sense.

I think you want to like them, but you won't let yourself like them. You don't always have to be the cool guy you know.
