It was tough to limit this to 15 albums... I know someone is going to want to vote for Re-act-or
You could just vote "Other" or "Smoo".Its a tribute to Young how difficult it is. One of my faves - Tonight's the Night - not even on the list. Went with Harvest.
I was looking for yesno. You could just vote "Other" or "Smoo".
True.I was looking for yesno. You could just vote "Other" or "Smoo".
My nephew died in a car crash at 20, when I was in my late 20s myself. The progression from acoustic to electric on Rust Never Sleeps felt very cathartic when I played it at increasing volume.Look out mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river
One of those classic lyrical mysteries. Neil threw together some cool-sounding lyrics that seem to tell part of a larger story, but no one knows what its about. I've always assumed its a family of back-river hillbillies running a moonshine operation that's getting busted by the feds (in the white boat).Look out mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river
Nah, this one isn't hard to figure out. It's exactly what you think it is.One of those classic lyrical mysteries. Neil threw together some cool-sounding lyrics that seem to tell part of a larger story, but no one knows what its about. I've always assumed its a family of back-river hillbillies running a moonshine operation that's getting busted by the feds (in the white boat).
I’d go with Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere for Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand alone.
Yep. I also love Cinnamon Girl.I’d go with Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere for Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand alone.
“Round and Round (It Won’t Be Long)” is a great deep track that doesn’t get played very much. Love the background vocals by Robin Lane.Yep. I also love Cinnamon Girl.
True, but it's all previously-unreleased tracks, yes? (As compared with a lot of live albums that have live versions of tracks from a few studio albums)rust never sleeps is a live album, not studio.
I looked this up earlier today when I saw it included here. Interesting info: “Most of the album was recorded live, then overdubbed in the studio.”rust never sleeps is a live album, not studio.
I think that was common of many live albums of the day to sharpen the sound.I looked this up earlier today when I saw it included here. Interesting info: “Most of the album was recorded live, then overdubbed in the studio.”
Time Fades Away was recorded the same way.I think that was common of many live albums of the day to sharpen the sound.I looked this up earlier today when I saw it included here. Interesting info: “Most of the album was recorded live, then overdubbed in the studio.”
I think it's more accurate to say Crazy Horse inspired "grunge", whatever that word means, more than the other way around.Mirror Ball isn't his best, but it might be one of my favorites. So influenced by 90s grunge, a departure for him but he faced it and aced it.
"Words unspoken tend to leave a hollow sound"....
He's put out a LOT of music. So many albums get lost in the shuffle.
"I'm The Ocean"...a "lost" classic from the perspective that many of Neil's fans were not Pearl Jam aficionados. Still a tune that I typically play 2-3 times in a row when it comes on.Mirror Ball isn't his best, but it might be one of my favorites. I think you and I would get along great on a road trip."I'm The Ocean"...a "lost" classic from the perspective that many of Neil's fans were not Pearl Jam aficionados. Still a tune that I typically play 2-3 times in a row when it comes on.
Love the classics, but will throw Freedom in the mix. Began his renaissance after the Geffen years and I challenge any artist in his late period to put out a string of albums as solid as Freedom to Broken Arrow. Predisposed to the Horse, so likely my bias.
Give his MTV Unplugged album a listen. I think you'd like it. We can adjust accordingly from there.I didn't recognize one album name.
I'll search for it on youtubeGive his MTV Unplugged album a listen. I think you'd like it. We can adjust accordingly from there.
I thought that Neil Young was one of the toughest artists to select a "best" album. Gotta be in the top 5 in that regard, maybe top 3.
Dig a hole ...I didn't recognize one album name.
Neil > Dylan for me. Not that it matters. An other vote for Tonight's the Night.
Totally understand that people would vote for other albums (or should I say, not other album?).
It's one of those one-off gems found in the catalogs of many other prolific artists. Springsteen's Nebraska comes to mind, and Bob Dylan and the Band's The Basment Tapes.
ETA: Forgot how good World on a String is.
Seriously?I didn't recognize one album name.
Schtickers gonna schtick.Seriously?
Could you name a Neil Young album before you posted in this thread? If not, why did you come in here?
That isn't very niceDig a hole ...
