Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (3 Viewers)

Man that 15-0 was the dagger for MD.

Still think the Hoosiers are the cream of the crop in the B1G. Really pulling for them.
I thought the dagger was Carey (89% free throw shooter) missing the front-end of a 1-1 after a turnover down 6, and Indiana grabbed the rebound and went down for an easy layup. Potential 4-point game with several minutes left to an 8-point game just like that. It felt deflating.
Was this the FT they got after the really bad blocking call against Tamar Bates? That was clearly a charge.

Ball don’t lie!!

Yea but B1G refs suck

Bob Knight used to work them over to perfection. Loved getting calls in our favor back in the day

And always have. I don't understand how they consistently have terrible officials

No, different one, I believe. Maryland had cut it to 6 with a bit less than 5 minutes to play, I believe. Indiana threw it away on the inbounds pass, and then committed an away from the ball foul before Maryland's player tried to inbound the ball, meaning no time ticked off at all for Indiana's possession or Maryland's possession. Carey went to the line and short-armed it. Ugh.

The one you mention was a bit later, I believe. And, yes, it looked like a bad call to me too.

Wisconsin has scored 18 points at halftime against Ohio St. Badgers are shooting 30.4% from the field and are 0-7 on 3PT attempts while the Buckeyes are 68.2% and 4-7. Thankfully, we've long known it would be a crime if this Wisconsin team made the tournament and I'm happy to be put out of my misery.
Time for Gard to go.

I'm not there yet but would say the seat is maybe getting a bit warm. The new AD Mcintosh fired two huge legacy coaches in Chryst and Granato in less than a year, as well as dumping Leonhard, so we know he's not a patient man who is going to pay homage to history. But he can't ignore Gard's track record of recent and historical success, including sharing Big 10 championships in two of the past three seasons. For me, the nature of college hoops is that even the best programs have down years and this was certainly a down year. They lost the player of the year (lottery pick) and a 5th year senior and the younger recruits simply weren't up to it.
I think he hangs around for another year but Chris McIntosh has made it clear with his recent firings of his standards. He's not satisfied with middle of the pack finishes or even occasional conference championships.

Ok I def remember that inbound pass. Game was totally in hand and Race Thompson turned it over twice in like 20 seconds.

When Tamar Bates, Miller Kopp, or even Trey Galloway get hot from 3 the Hoosiers can definitely beat anyone. TJD gives them automatic buckets. They have some nice depth as well behind him. Don’t think many teams match them in the post.

JHS is becoming automatic as well (he’s going pro now I’m pretty sure, we are gonna be brutal next year) he is so smooth and not afraid of the moment.

I don’t see them putting it all together to get to Final Four but you never know. If they don’t get to Sweet 16 will be a pretty big let down which is the first time saying in a long time (which is crazy).
Kopp and Bates have been totally worthless and we are lucky to be down 10 in first half.

I think Penn State is now at least a 9. I hate 8, 9 seeds.
I'd be surprised if they're that high (unless they win today), but they would be a nightmare for a couple of the #1s in the 2nd round if they landed 8 or 9. They have a bona fide star in Pickett who can light up anyone, they are experienced, and they are well-coached. They won't get Purdue (who would actually be their best matchup) and I think Houston would handle them, but PSU could give Bama or Kansas fits and bust a bracket wide open.

They CANNOT guard teams with 3+ good outside shooters, especially with both Thompson and Kopp on the floor together. Against those teams, you just pray they're having an off shooting game. Any team that plays 4-out or 5-out is going to give them fits.

They also don't attempt enough 3s. In 2 games vs PSU this year they were outscored 78-18 from 3. Add in the home loss to Iowa and it's 117-24 in just 3 games.

Throw in both Kopp and Galloway seeming to be afraid/unable to shoot the last 2 games. I think Sweet 16 is highly dependent on the brackets.

CBS has them as a 9. Scrub them against the teams in that range of the bracket. 22-12 8-6 in Quad 1 games. 10-6 in BPI quality games. No bad losses.

Look at Auburn who CBS has as an 8. 20-12 3-10 in Quad 1.

Crazy bad draw for Penn State. 10 is too low and then they get A&M who should have been a 5. If they get by, they get Texas, who is likely the toughest 2.

Maryland as an 8 and Penn State as a 10 makes no sense
As a Maryland fan, I'd actually rather have a generic #10 seed draw. PSU getting an under-seeded A&M is bad luck for them but, win that game, and they can make a run. They'll have to shoot better than they did yesterday, though.

Maryland drew a nightmare in WV. Even if they beat them, they'd have to turn around while full of Huggins-bruises and play "we can run all day" Bama.

Maryland needs to win this one as revenge for the 2015 loss.

My B1G NCAA Tourney predictions:

Purdue - Sweet 16
Illinois - 2nd round
Iowa, MSU, Indiana, Northwestern, Maryland, Penn St - 1st round

Ouch.

Mine:

Purdue - Elite 8
Northwestern, Indiana - Sweet 16
Illinois, MSU- 2nd round
Iowa, Maryland, Penn St - 1st round

I'll play.

Purdue - Elite 8
Indiana - Sweet 16
Maryland, Michigan St. - 2nd round
Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa, Penn St. - 1st round

I think Maryland, Illinois, and Iowa are all toss-ups, as usual for a 8/9 game.

Mine -

Purdue - S16
MSU - Round of 32
Iowa - Round of 32
Indiana - first round
Penn St - first round
Illinois - Round of 32
Northwestern - first round
Maryland - first round

I’ll take a stab -

Purdue - S16
MSU - 2nd Round
Iowa - 2nd Round
Indiana - S16
Penn St - 1st around
Illinois - 1st Round
Northwestern - 2nd Round
Maryland - 1st Round

I am optimistic about their chances, but it is important to note that you shouldn't expect many wins from 8,9, and 10 teams

Purdue - S16
MSU - s16
Iowa - 2nd Round
Indiana - S16
Penn St - 2nd round, but could make a run
Illinois - s16, a terrible draw for Kansas
Northwestern - 1 and done
Maryland - 2nd Round

No deep runs predicted, but 11 wins would be a good showing.

I'm always more optimistic that most...

Purdue - Final Four - I think Memphis could be a struggle, but Painter should have them ready at this point. Arizona ends the dream.
MSU - One and done. - Consistency just has not been there all year.
Iowa - One and done - Not playing defense is not an option in March.
Indiana - Elite8 - TJD and JHS put it all together at the right time; Sampson vs IU in the s16 is a classic, but Sean Miller gets his revenge in the elite 8.
Penn St - 2nd Round - Texas A&M looking ahead to Texas, gets firebombed by PSU from three instead. Texas doesn't make the same mistake.
Illinois - 2nd Round - Kansas is really, really good.
Northwestern - S16 - Down goes UCLA in one of the bigger surprises of the tournament. Gonzaga proves to be too much though.
Maryland - 2nd Round - They will not be able to keep up with Alabama.

12 total wins.

Love your optimism!!

My shot at prognostication. All the teams are out by the end of the first weekend except Purdue who is the first #1 to lose in the S16. I am intrigued by PSU though.

I just looked the CBS bracket I submitted and had the same. I was sober when I filled it out, is my only excuse.

Anyway, I don't worry about conferences when I'm filling those things out.

I haven't noticed before, but Reese has the strangest free-throw motion I've seen. I'm amazed he can make even one.
