Bored Upgrade - discussion (1 Viewer)

I do that and I get zero results for stuff I know is in the thread.
I don't know how good the in thread searching is.  But if you search in this thread for recent posts, you'll get some results back, because posts going into the thread post-upgrade are being added to the indexes that drive searching.

Like we've said, it takes quite awhile for all the indexes to be rebuilt on the millions of posts in the system.  The last upgrade I think it was about a week before some things started working again because the indexes had to be rebuilt then as well.  The "posts I've replied to" is the same way, until all the pre-board upgrade posts are done being re-indexed, it doesn't have something to check that says which threads you've posted in.

The stuff created since the switch pulls up, nothing created before the switch dating to 2003 does.

The indexing I get, and I guess we will await the results.

Is there no way the indexing could have been done ahead of the upgrade???

I know it has been said many, many times before, but the search function here is beyond horrible.  It was comically bad before the upgrade, I guess I will withhold judgement on the new board.

Anyone else getting this it sucks!

In Chrome on a macbook - Quote a post but then refresh page or back out without submitting. That quote or anything you have typed is then there whenever you try to quote or post later in the thread. If it is a quote you cannot get rid of it. It is there forever! Have to post with that quote to get a fresh box.

Doesn't happen in Safari.
Yes. Not sure what part of the software the programmers missed to allow it to happen but it is very annoying.
I am getting it on FF on an iMac.

This is probably well known, but I just noticed it:  If you highlight some text a box pops up saying "quote".  Click that and it builds the quote box in your reply -- and attributes the quote.  That's pretty neat, and a big improvement.

That's how you can "nest Quote your replies.. Just highlight all responses, then click the "Quote" that pops up.. Now the full message you are trying quote isn't lost.

The filters for "threads I've posted in" as well as the Activity stream are working now, as the indexes they use finished rebuild. The search index is building at present and some things may show up in searches already but it's still got a ways to go until it's finished.

You can't goto the last post in a thread you already posted in that's already been read. You have to click the thread and scroll all the way to the bottom. Dumb

See where it says how long ago the last post was made? That is a link to the last post.

Hey!  That actually works!  There really needs to be a list of this stuff.  I still can't figure out how to delete messages and notifications.

So what happened to my post total? I mean I am nowhere near Tim level, but it shows I only have 7000 posts and I had more than double that (like 16K) before the change over..

Images are ruining this board for me.  Are we keeping images in threads?  If so, I might have to end my time here again.
I Personally like having images in the threads.. but also understand for some they get annoying.. Much like some disliked seeing Avatars, or signatures.. Would be nice to give some of you the options to not display them, so the rest of us can enjoy them.. :)

Yeah, I'd be fine with that.  The only time I'm on here is at work and even things that most would consider not racy, I don't want showing up on my work laptop.  I went into the Vikings thread and there's a huge picture of the actress in her bikini.  It's not NSFW in the traditional sense, but I don't want that popping up on a work computer.

People should have common sense not to post semi NWS images outside of image specific threads like Images that Rule or Who's Hottest.  A bikini pic in a thread about Vikings is a prime example.

Hmmm ... inserting pictures is way less intuitive than I thought.

People were saying drag-and-drop for pics? No dice. No way to paste in a link and get the

I like them, but word is they will be going away.

That being said... if you continue to threaten leaving... the mods may reconsider.
I'm actually just the opposite of the Sheik. I might leave if pics go away. The forums went down quite a bit visually with this latest upgrade but the ability to post pics/gifs have made it a lot more fun. Without the pics/gifs to liven everything up, this place is gonna suck again.

I just want to clarify, it wasn't meant to be a threat.  FBG can do whatever they want and that's fine.  I'm just saying that I won't be able to visit the site because I only access it from work.  I don't mean it to be a "Get rid of pictures or I'm leaving" type statement.

Not to be argumentative, but what do you do about people who have half naked chicks as their profile photo?

Obviously, I have to just put up with it.  You used to be able to disable profile pictures, but I couldn't find that option when I came back.  The one good thing about them was that they were at least small.  Big difference between a small avatar and a full page picture.

This is a long thread, and I have only looked through maybe the last 20 pages or so ...

Was the impetus for this particular board software change mentioned or discussed? A lot of popular websites won't upgrade forum software unless the forum software company starts to withdraw support for a given version -- is that what happened here?

Per Memphis Foundry, it was done to improve overall board stability/efficency and to resolve a number of longstanding issues. Also supposed to result in a search function that works.
