Brad Smith... (1 Viewer)

Brad Smith #16 | Wide Receiver | New York Jets

Height: 6-2 Weight: 212

Born: Dec 12, 1983 - Youngstown, OH

College: Missouri

Draft: 2006 - 4th round (6th pick) by the New York Jets

• He's got a ways to go, but Jets rookie receiver Brad Smith, the former Missouri quarterback, is starting to show up and make some plays on the practice field. The fourth-round pick is still learning the basics of his new position, but New York is hopeful it has another Antwaan Randle-El or Hines Ward on its hands.

• Has NFL potential written all over him, he has nice size, athleticness, can make plays on the run like very few can

•Outstanding athlete who is best running the football. Displays vision running the ball, waits for blocks to develop, then explodes through the hole. Will pick and choose his spots, finds the running lanes and displays skill in the open field.

As a Mizzou Fan, I enjoyed the Brad Smith era. However, forget it... he's not going to turn into anything in the pros.Count me as shocked if he did.

He's a good stash-and-wait player in large dynasty leagues. I wouldn't expect anything out of him in 2006 however.

Prepare to be shocked ... he has been lighting up camp by all reports ... and the Jets are not cutting their 4th round pick ...Jets | B. Smith continues to impressThu, 10 Aug 2006 13:47:59 -0700Tom Rock, of Newsday, reports New York Jets WR Brad Smith continues to impress in training camp and if he manages to make the 53-man roster, it could be due to his versatility. In addition to catching most everything thrown his way, his previous experience as a quarterback would be valuable on end-arounds and option passes.Jets | Smith progressingFri, 4 Aug 2006 14:55:33 -0700Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets WR Brad Smith is improving in his transition from college quarterback to pro receiver. "Each day is a little bit better," head coach Eric Mangini said of Smith's progress. "Each day you capitalize on your opportunities. It's not 'Who is that guy?' It's 'Did you see what he did?' or 'He's really making progress here.' That's what I'm looking for."

Be prepared to be shocked. He has looked very good so far, he learns fast. His route running has improved since just the beginning of camp, and he has made some ridiculous catches, on the sidelines, laying out and in traffic. The Jets have installed several trick passing plays with him lining up in the backfield, and also have given him some handoffs. He's a lock to make the roster, and quite likely as the #4 WR.

He definitely has long term potential...

- great open field runner

- good combo of quicks and physicality to get open and beat jams at the line

- Jets lack a big play WR of the future

I recommend taking him in the 50s of your IDP rookie drafts, late 30s if its offense only.

This is just becoming a more common theme everywhere. Sort of an all around weapon that teams are looking for. Josh Cribbs on the Browns is one that I could see breaking out soon in the mold of Randle El. Smith and Cribbs could be even better.

I watched as many of his college games as were on TV and he had a unique set of skills. The option that they ran looked horribly slow and he didn't seem to have any speed at all. Yet at the end of each play he seemed to be 15 yards downfield. I can't imagine he has the speed to be successful at WR, but he's met every challenge he's faced so far.

Maybe I'll draft him on the last round out of respect.

 I've never even heard of Josh Cribbs before. Google, here I come!

Cribbs was used mainly as a return man and is also listed as a WR in 2005. He was a QB coming out of college (Vick of the MAC?), but has really impressed Crennel with his speed and athleticism. He's been working on his receiving skills and is looking to make more of a splash as a WR/KR this year. There has also been rumors from the Browns TC that Cribbs may be used as a QB a little this season as well. I believe it will be along the same lines as the option pass mentioned above.

I picked up Smith as a flyer in some of my dynasty leagues for a few reasons:

- He was a pretty high draft pick for a QB convert.

- QB converts have done pretty well lately (Ward, Bennett, Randle El, Battle, and you could even count Boldin).

- He tested well at the combine with a 39.5" vertical leap, a 10'8" broad jump, a 4.55 40, and a decent number in the three cone drill.

- He was a star player in college.

The Jets probably have the worst WR group in the NFL. That could change in a Calvin Johnson minute, but right now Smith appears to have a very realistic chance of climbing the depth chart and possibly even starting within two years.

Funny, as a Jayhawk fan, I'm expecting Smith to have a decent career. Not Hines Ward caliber, but a good #2 WR in NY for awhile. Not an elite receiver by any stretch, but someone reliable who the coaches and QB can rely on. Probably a better WR than Randle El. One of the very few players in the North this year that had the potential to be elite, if he had better coaching.

Brad Smith... ahahahahaha

The only games of his I ever saw were against KU but I saw a guy who panicked under pressure and seemed scared of getting tackled. And I certainly didn't see a guy with a knack for finding holes/lanes.

2005 @KU - 13 pass attempts, 31 yds; 9 carries, 27 yds (58 total yds)

2004 vsKU - 17 pass attempts, 86 yds; 13 carries, -41 yards (45 total yds)

2003 @KU - 11 pass attempts, 29 yds; 8 carries, 24 yds (53 total yds)

2002: 15-117 rushing, 16 pass attempts, 135 yards. If we know one thing about Mizzou, it's their coaching stinks. Pinkell ruined Smith's college career.

I watched Smith play for 4 years at Mizzou, attending every home game. Mizzou fans groan about his lack of QB skills, they eat their own like that. You give Smith a small opening and you've got the potential for a big play on the ground, never mind getting him in open space, it's over for the defender. If the Jets can do either of those things, like the reverse last night, Smith has big play written all over him. His route running probably needs honing but the man is a talent, it's up to the Jets to take advantage of it.

From what I've seen of him during preseason games, I don't see why he can't become at least a decent NFL player. As a Mizzou fan, I can attest that he's a pretty smart guy and should be able to pick up the WR position pretty well. Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel, who's a complete freaking moron if you ask me, often toyed and tinkered with the playbook and put Smith in a position where he was constantly re-learning things, but still, Brad adapted pretty well.

I believe he's still available in one of my rookie drafts that's still going on, so I may just take a flier on him in hopes of him becoming like a Randall El/Slash type.

He, like Robinson, are potential gold in dynasty leages. Had to chuckle when he got a drive in that last preseason game... and scored. maybe they cut Ramsey after all?

Yeah, damn him for taking a completely trashed Mizzou squad and leading them to two bowl games and some pretty damn good recruiting years.Nick Saban, he isn't, but he's very good for what we have here.

Yeah, he did beat Spurrier's South Carolina squad in their bowl game last year. But for a while there, Pinkel seemed intent on making Brad Smith a pocket passer. Granted, Brad did adjust after a year or two, but that was after Pinkel loosened the reigns on him a little bit. We'll see how things go this year, but I'm still not sold on Pinkel. Another solid year (7-5 or so) will make me change my mind.

I think that's just Pinkel's style. Now that he has a very good pocket passer, I think we'll see a marked improvement.Hey, at least we were a Big XII team that pounded the DII team like we should have yesterday.Montana St. indeed.

Smith did a bit more than that. He came into the game in the 4th quarter after never having practiced running the offense all summer, and took a team that trailed 17-10, and drove it for two scores and the win. He also scored the game winning TD on his own, on a play that no other QB on the Jets could make. So yeah, it was preseason and all, but this guy has got some spark in his game.

As a long time Mizzou season ticket holder I agree with many of the comments in this thread about Brad, the coaching and especially Mizzou fans eating their own. The one thing about Brad is that if he had played at a big school and had been surrounded by talent like other scrambling QBs like Young, Smith at Ohio State, etc... he would have torched the record books because not every pass would have to be perfect for 1st round WRs to make plays, but as it is he only holds 69 team, conference and national records. I'm not sure what the beaker fans are talking about when they say he panicked and was scared to get hit, it usually was that the coaching staff abandoned the run at the first sign of trouble and EVERYTHING was on Brad's shoulders with little else to complement him. (Check out the video below if you think Brad is scared to take a hit)

Ask Nebraska how good he is, he single-handedly beat them for the first two times in my life while he graced the field in Columbia. If not for a trick play on a fake field goal, he would have led the Tigers to a huge upset against a highly ranked OU team a few years ago.

Bottom line: Brad is a rare talent, his measurables don't sound that off the chart, but I never saw him get caught from behind on any of his TDs and most of the time after he made his cut on his designed draw plays it was all over for the defense because he has very deceptive speed in the open field.

Don't take my word for it, watch his video clips and check out his stats.

Brad's list of records

By the way, in the Illinois game, #28 is Eugene Wilson, a senior All-American and he gets absolutely blasted at the goalline on one of Brad's TDs and gets turned around by a kid making his first career start.

Anyway, I figured most of the nation knows who he is and probably see him as a one dimensional QB like Eric Crouch, but the truth is that he is just an outstanding athlete that happened to play QB and doesn't have very far to go to start seeing significant reps with the Jets at a number of positions.

Well put, Boogity.. Same with B Nuggett.Smith is a playmaker, first. Once he develops those unnatural WR skills (timing, route running, footwork, breaking the jam, etc) that he doesn't have from playing experience, he'll be fine (IMO). Then again, I'll be the first to admit that I take special interest in players like him: Michael Robinson, Ward, Boldin, etc. There's so many former QBs turned WRs that it's a long list to produce. Rod Smith was a quarterback. Obviously, not all of them turn into gems. Michael Spurlock is a kid the Cardinals like, but he may never see the field beyond the PS and scout teams. It's hard to say, but as far as Smith goes, count me among those who firmly believe he'll develop into a solid player in NFL terms and possibly fantasy terms as well.

So he was way more elusive than Rasheed Marshall? Niners seemed to really like him last year but he was cut this year

Smith is a lot bigger and was drafted higher. People expected Marshall to get cut this season because he just couldn't catch the ball.

Don't forget one of the better converts from QB to WR: Brian Mitchell. Yeah, he was never a starter in the league, but for a long while, he was one of the more better, if not feared, return men in the league.

I think Brad Smith is a great dynasty prospect, but unlike Cotchery last year he isn't set up for a starting job. The talent is there but I think he's a year or two away from starting. He could maybe take over in 2008 for Coles, who is signed through 2009 but has large base salaries in '08 and '09.

3/9/2005: Signed a five-year, $25 million contract. The deal includes $8 million guaranteed. 2007: $3 million, 2008: $5 million, 2009: $6 million, 2010: Free Agent

Smith is a phenomenal buy right now. Though you'll likely have to wait on him for 1-2 more years, he might have more upside than any WR on the Jets. Lots of people have praised his attitude and he was reportedly the best WR on the field during a lot of team practices next season. I look for him to earn the WR3 role this season and potentially emerge as a starting NFL WR in 2008 or 2009.

The guy had all of 27 touches last season, and of those only nine were receptions. Still very tough to get a handle on him. McCareins wasn't traded around draft time, so we're still talking about at least three guys in front of him, and Tim Dwight is back from injury too. Coles and Cotcherry are locks at their spots, but #3 is wide open - the team would love for Smith to step it up in camp and prove that McCareins is expendable. So long as Tim Dwight looks ok, I think the club could go in that direction.

Overall, I like his ability, but he's easily a year away, at best.

I tend to agree with this line of thought.Dude could be a real special player.A dynasty buy and hold, with a 1-2 year projected return, imo.

I am glad you guys dug up my thread from last year...

here's some dirt on my boy this season...

Jets | B. Smith practicing kickoff returns

Thu, 31 May 2007 15:51:02 -0700

Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Jets WR Brad Smith practiced returning kickoffs during practice Thursday, May 31.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

What’s Changed: Now entering his second year, Smith’s opportunity is limited with Justin McCareins on the roster. There have been rumors that McCareins could be dealt or cut closer to training camp, but nothing has materialized as of yet. Smith does remain a coaching-staff favorite.

Outlook: Against rookie Chansi Stuckey, Tim Dwight, and Wallace Wright, Smith will be competing to be the Jets’ No. 4 wideout behind Jerricho Cotchery, Laveranues Coles, and McCareins. At this point, there’s no reason to believe he’ll catch more than 20 passes.

last year- Jets coach Eric Mangini is reportedly "desperate" to get rookie receiver/running back Brad Smith more playing time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe he could win the number 3 job, but as far as being an every week starter in your league, it doesn't look good as of now....

if you have return yards however...he might make a dante hall #3 wr splash, as a nice bye week fill-in type role...

I agree with others....it might take him some time...and its not like coles and cotch are that old...
