Braylon edwards, Colston and calvin johnson- panic time or stick with? (1 Viewer)

each of these guys have serious question marks.

1. calvin johnson- who knows how long it will take for him and stafford to click

2. edwards-quinn doesn't seem to look for him as much as da did. and anderson was better with the deep ball

3. colston- brees spreads it around too much for colston to put up consistent fantasy numbers.

Given that his QB is on pace for 96 TDs, I think he won't starve with one trip to that massive buffet.

Wow, one of these things is not like the others. I'm not worried about Calvin in the least. He should have had 93 yards and a TD but the ref blew the call. If you call that not clicking, I'll take it.

yeah if you watched that game you would have seen they he was targeted early and often. He will be top 5 by end of the year.

PUT AS MANY SAINTS IN YOUR LINEUP AS POSSIBLE!!!BREES COLSTON AND SHOCKEY GET STARTS HERE....IT ONLY GOT ME 9 TDS THIS WEEK!

Geez.. Colston scored this week & Brees through for 6 TD's.. I think barring injury Colston will be more than fine..Calvin had 90 yards & had a TD that should of counted. I think he will also be fine..Edwards is up in the air but I still think he will be fine.. It's way to early but what did you expect from Calvin & Colston. One scored & the other had 90 yards & sort of scored..

Edwards would have had a TD if he was not pushed out of bounds, which the refs threw a flag on. Yes I am an Edwards owner and yes I understand the Brady Quin factor. But still does not negate the fact that Edwards beat his man on coverage, Quin saw it and threw him the ball.

Panic time for Calvin? You can't be serious. 90yds on just three catches and he should have a TD. Calvin = money.

His 13 targets (and long recalled TD) have me looking for ways to trade for him in my PPR league. No worries here.

2. edwards-quinn doesn't seem to look for him as much as da did. and anderson was better with the deep ball

Not worried, since I didn't have high expectations anyway. Quinn looked terrible, even on his short slant passes. I think Braylon won't have as many bad games as week 1, but at the same time I don't think his average game/production will be that much better.

3. colston- brees spreads it around too much for colston to put up consistent fantasy numbers.

Very worried here. Especially with his lack of targets (6) and Bree's tendency to share the wealth. My plan is to wait and see for 1-2 more games, then sell (high, if possible) if things don't improve dramatically.

Heck, I'd start Devry, Meachump, and More too. Brezs is a beast.

Crazy talk. Top 5. I predict he will end up better than Fitz and Boldin.

I agree to an extent. I suspect that one of the ARI WRs will post better numbers, just not sure which one.

So do you think Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem are going to get open often against competition that isn't JV caliber? Have they ever been able to? Also, detroit was giving away the deep post over and over so the two speed guys got out on single coverage and brees hit them. This is WAY too early to give up anything on Colston

also you should have panicked on braylon last year. Questionable hands + questionable offense / QB situation = bad news braylon

2. edwards-quinn doesn't seem to look for him as much as da did. and anderson was better with the deep ball
I like Anderson to come back in the QB picture soon. Quinn is a wreck. Anderson may not find the magic from 2 years ago, but he is better than Quinn. Edwards will be OK....maybe top 10 still, probably top 15 anyways.

Brady and Braylon wont work.

Calvin will be ok.

Colston is still a factor in the redzone. He'll be ok.

Colston - no worries

Calvin - All Stafford does is target him. Unfortunately 90% of his throws are > 5 yards off his target. Short term worries, but should be ok.

Edwards - All the QB inefficieny of Stafford without the tunnel vision targetting. Be very afraid.

Hopefully you're right!

Calvin had 13 targets. Trade for him if you can.

Was never high on Edwards

Colston...only 6 targets? Not good, but it could be a case of the Lions being sooo bad everyone could get open. If they have tougher matchups Colston may become the go to guy.

I'm not worried yet... add that catch, 34 yards and a TD and his points from this weekend would have been fine.

Which TD? (7:54) 10-B.Quinn pass short left to 17-B.Edwards for 34 yards, TOUCHDOWN. Penalty on MIN-23-C.Griffin, Defensive Pass Interference, declined. Minnesota challenged the ineligible receiver ruling, and the play was REVERSED. 10-B.Quinn pass deep left to 17-B.Edwards for 34 yards, TOUCHDOWN NULLIFIED by Penalty. PENALTY on MIN-23-C.Griffin, Defensive Pass Interference, 28 yards, enforced at MIN 34 - No Play.

Back-to-back TD passes from Quinn to Edwards...he'll be just fine...relax people.

I think some of you are just looking at his yards and TDs and didn't watch the game.

FWIW, he had 5 recorded targets, and it'd be 7 if the counted the two called back TD's

I had Calvin Johnson in a redraft last year and was always waiting for the bottom to drop out, based upon what I thought was an unsustainably high TD:rec ratio and an over-reliance on the big play.

I'd have the same concerns this year with a rookie QB throwing him the ball. I won't be surprised if his TDs drop into the 6-8 range (same territory Wayne, SSmith, White, Marshall were in last year). That may or may not be good enough for a top 10 finish.

Obviously no need to panic, but IMO it'd be wise to temper your expectations a bit.

Colston will be up and down. In the end he'll be the Saints' leading WR, but week in and week out the load will be shared enough that all of them will have some clunkers.

Edwards, I'd be pretty concerned. I can't tell yet whether the loss of Winslow is good or bad for BE, but '07 is looking awfully flukey right about now.

I'm dropping Edwards this week for Antwaan Randle El. I was hoping he would have another year like he did 2 years ago but it ain't going to happen.

yikes..Randle El? I'd wait a week or two and see what happens with Edwards. Chances are El will be on the WW all year for you to pickup.

Steve Smith should be on this list as well.
Assuming you mean Carolina... let's look at the options. He cost most owners a 2nd or 3rd round pick, so he was thought of highly enough to be a top 30 pick in nearly all leagues.Option 1: Drop him for a free agent who had a good week 1. This means dropping a player who has a six-year track record as a top receiver, who averaged more than 100 yards per game last season, who has averaged just shy of a touchdown every other game for the past three seasons for some player who had one good week, possibly against a very weak pass defense, and who was passed over by 10-14 teams (or at least 8).Option 2: Trade him.Take the same high draft pick, with all the accolades I listed in Option 1, and trade him when he's at a very low value.Option 3: Keep him and hope his expected 80-90 yards per game and roughly 7 TDs on the season are still feasible.I like Option 3.If you're looking to expand the list, I vote for Bernard Berrian, both because of his health and the question of how many deep passes will be part of the Favre offense.

Can't say if you should panic or not without knowing when you drafetd them and what you expected. If you expected Johnson to remain unaffected by a rookie QB throwing to him and you built your team around that scenario, you should panic. If you expected Edwards to return to his former glory and you are depending on that to happen, you should panic. If you must have Colston finish in the top 10, you should panic. But of your expectations were more moderate, you should stick it out.

I'd panic.
when in doubt, just roll with it. And do it hysterically, kicking and screaming. If you want to do something, go all the way with it. Call other team owners in your league, first crying, then displaying anger, then acting like a new born baby, anything it takes for them to take these guys off your hand at firesale prices. Make sure to videotape the entire process and post in on youtube for all out entertainment...TIA...KTHXBYE...

Of course I wouldn't drop Steve Smith but I wouldn't drop any of the guys. It's just with how bad Delhomme looked Smith owners have just as much to worry about as Braylon, Colston, and Calvin owners

Smitty had 13 targets.

Braylon had 5 targets.

Colston had 6 targets.

Calvin had 13 targets.

If Smith and Calvin continue to get that many targets, I would not worry about them in the least. In fact, I'd try to buy them now because their value is lower than it should be.

I'm worried Braylon got so few targets. I'm also worried Colston got so few targets, but I could say that could be a case of the Lions being so horrible, everybody was able to get open when against average defenses Colston could easily become the go to guy.

So I'd BUY Calvin.

BUY Steve Smith (Car).

SELL/HOLD Braylon (depends on the value you can get for him).

And honestly, I'm really not sure about Colston.

It's week one take a pill and chill out......

Is it really surprising that Brady Quinn looked rusty after a preseason where he didn't take all the snaps with the starting offense? Or that they kept it simple during his first game against the Minny D? The same thing happened last year.

Quinn played three games last year. The first week they played together, Edward laid a one catch egg, while Quinn completed 23 passes. Of those passes, 13 went to the tight ends, and seven more to the running backs. That's more of an indictment of Quinn, or the coaches' confidence in Quinn, than Edwards. Note that 10 of those passes went to Kellen Winslow, too.

In Quinn and Braylon's second game together, Edwards caught 8 for 105. The following week, Edwards had 5 for 85 in a game started by Quinn and finished by Anderson. So there's reason for optimism, especially after the TD that got called back.

I'll also repost this from another thread about Braylon's schedule last year: Baltimore and Pittsburgh are going to be part of his schedule regardless, but without Polamalu and Rex Ryan, he may have a little more breathing room. And games against Indy, Tennessee and the NFC East last year were a much rougher draw than they have this year. Edwards started the season out against a Dallas team that was firing on all cylinders early last year, then Pittsburgh and Baltimore. He caught eight passes for 73 yards combined in those three games. He then went 3/22/1, 5/154/1, 4/58, 2/64, against CIN, NYG, WAS and JAX, and wrapped it up with 4/86/1 against Baltimore before Anderson went out. That's much more respectable.

In summary, that's 26 catches for 457 yards and 3 TDs against Dallas (#5 against the pass), Pittsburgh (#1), Washington (#7), Baltimore (#2) twice, the Giants (#8), Jacksonville (#24), and Cinci (#15). That's about the hardest imaginable schedule, and he projects to 52 catches for 914 yards and 6 TDs against it.

But wait there's more. Anderson got hurt, too, in his first start back from injury. Enter Ken Dorsey. Who threw for 374 yards total in just over three games. How is Edwards supposed to score with that kind of QB play? And against Indy, Tennessee, Philly, and Cinci, to boot. In Dorsey's first full game, Edwards again struggled with his new QB, and caught just 3 of his 14 targets. Ouch. But the next game, Edwards managed a 5 catch (on 5 targets no less) 102 yard performance against Philly. And the following week, he caught 4 of 7 targets from Dorsey for a miserable 32 yards, before Dorsey went out and was replaced by Bruce Gradkowski. The same Bruce Gradkowski who, in the final game against Pittsburgh, attempted 16 passes and completed a grand total of 5 of them. For 18 yards. Total. In the whole game. And threw two picks.

Oh, and did I mention how brutal the schedule was against those teams with all the QB changes? They played against Denver (26th, but Quinn's first game), Buffalo (#13), Houston (#17), Indy (#6), Tennessee (#9), Philly (#3), Cinci (#15), and the Steelers (#1).

Just to drive that point home, Cleveland played ten games against the top ten pass defenses in the league last year. And six of those were against the top 5. They played thirteen against the top half of the league, and zero against the bottom third. The average defensive ranking of the teams they faced in the first half? Fourth. The average overall? Ninth.

This year, the Browns still play Pittsburgh and Baltimore twice each. But they also play five games against the bottom seven pass defenses in the league from last year (KC, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, San Diego) and only one non-division game against a top ten pass defense from last year (Oakland, #10).

Their schedule is much easier. Their quarterback situation should be much more stable. Edwards is the only decent receiver in town. Did Edwards drop a lot of balls last year? Sure. But he had everything go against him last year, too. Which seems more reasonable, that Edwards had a completely fluky year in which he caught 16 TDs in 2007 and will never do better than the 3 TDs he caught in 2008, or that Edwards is an extremely talented guy who had trouble last year because of a ridiculously tough schedule and a slew of quarterback changes?

Lumping these 3 together is a mistake. Last year ok but this year you are talking about a definite #1wr probably a #1 receiver and, at best, a low level #2 receiver (actually #3 on alot of teams including mine)

Being upset at the produstion of Colston seems silly. Johnson got his targets so he will be fine. Braylon wont put up the numbers of either of them and he shouldnt be expected to. If you drafted him as a #1 receiver thats your bad. How about lumping him in with guys he was drafted comparably to, then have that discussion. I will take a bad game from Edwards in a heartbeat as my wr 3..... they do that you know.
