Braylon Edwards released (1 Viewer)

Dr. Awesome

Kudos to derek19 for finding this news and sharing it in the SF thread. He hasn't done much this year but I still felt it was newsworthy of its own thread.

He claims his injury is taking too long to heal so SF released him. What do we make of his dynasty prospects? What teams might sign him as a starter?

This is crazy -- what the heck happened to this guy?

Don't know a lot about his injury, so I don't want to disparage Edwards for lack of heart if he's truly battling something severe.

What?Sign him as a starter? We are talking about Braylon Edwards. He is done, has been done, and it took 3 teams not wanting him for him to find his humility. Dynasty-wise, he might be worth an end of the roster spot in larger leagues. Otherwise, he is just a body.

See, this is the kind of thing I'm wondering about. If his body is OK, couldn't he re-dedicate himself somewhere else, earnestly apply himself to his craft, and become fantasy-relevant again?

Very sad to watch his decline as a UofM alum. At one point, it looked like he was the only decent top 10 pick in a terrible draft. Now, not so much. How's this for a first round?

Seems clear why so many teams are still having problems.

Great Buy Low

He will get it turned around somewhere, he wasn't horrible in New York. he has had Sanchez and Alex Smith slinging it to him for the last 2-3 years, don't remember too many good QBs in Cleveland either. He'll get a fresh start somewhere and make some noise again.

Agreed....Most Jet fans I know would take him back in a heartbeat... The Jets totally lacked the big plays Braylon made last year - granted they hardly even threw the ball in that manner.Part of the problem was the DUI in New York... But, if you read Rex's book (I know....lol) he praises Braylon's work ethic and talent.Another issue was the fact that the Jets paid Holmes 50 million so, from on the field production, it was hard for Braylon and the Jets to agree on a dirt cheap contract like he played in SF for since Braylon wasn't 48 million dollars worse. I realize those numbers need to be adjusted a ton for per year value - but whatever ;)If healthy, on a decent team and one of the starters he will make noise.Way too many people buy the anti-hype on this guy. I think he's gotten a bad rap overall.

Maybe Green Bay if they are still short at WR?
The Packers have a practice squad WR (Tori Gurley) who they really like, and he is expected to take over for Driver. The Vikings actually tried to sign Gurley, but he declined, knowing that he had a brighter future in Green Bay (Packers gave him a pay raise to stay on the Practice squad too). If Jennings isn't ready for the playoffs, I'm sure they'd prefer to plug him in rather than sign someone with injury concerns and unfamiliarity with their offense. Edwards will likely go unsigned, looking to catch on with a new team for next season.

Well if he stays consistant I am sure a horrible passing team like Jax will be his next stop. I don't think the guy is all that bad. His biggest fault is he followed up a monster season with a total flop. He has never had a good QB and he was hurt this year. I doubt he is ever a great WR but I think the guy can play and will be holding him a while longer. If I am wrong that's ok but there are worse stash and wait guys out there.

New England should sign him. If they have the horrible collection of WRs on their roster, they have room for Edwards.

I'll agree with that too. There are a lot of teams that could use the help (and experience) - JAX comes to mind, but a lot can happen in the off-season.

This late in the season he probably goes nowhere unless a playoff team suffers an injury and have very little depth. He will have to shop his services after the season most likely.

I'd be concerned that a 12 or 13 win 49ers team would rather take their chances with 1 healthy WR and grab a third TE off the practice squad than deal with Braylon. Maybe Harbaugh is acting rashly, but it certainly doesn't look good.

Marques Colston will be a FA and may leave the Saints this coming off-season. I wonder if getting on a team like New Orleans and the prospect playing with Brees would be enough to get the best out of Edwards for multiple seasons?

Could see NE taking a shot if they part with Ocho (which seems likely)

Not a huge Braylon fan, but there are certainly worse guys to use a flier on.

I'm still trying to sort this one out as a niners fan. They are down to two healthy WRs and will need to dig into their practice squad to get a third, let alone a fourth if both Ginn and Williams are out. Add the potential unavailability of Walker and niners are left with only Crabtree and Davis as legit targets. This looks like bad timing even if Edwards was struggling as a locker room presence. I hope the niners aren't thinking they can beat the Rams with one hand tied behind their backs because that's usually when good teams lose to bad ones (just ask NO who slept walked through their meeting the Rams for a big time wake up call). Even a less than satisfied Edwards has got to be better than the practice squad.

So I shouldn't pick him up in my redraft league?
In redrafts he's worthless. In dynasty leagues his value is going to vary between worthless or an intriguing buy low.

Ginn and Williams will probably be back by the playoffs. So they're out one week. Braylon wasn't going to be healthy enough to play against St. Louis anyhow. This has extremely little impact (if any) on how the team will perform.

In the playoffs, maybe, but there is still the nagging issue of getting the bye week. The niners offensively are still not very good and if Ginn and Williams were available this week, I'd agree. But they may not be, so it seems premature. I wasn't aware that inury would prevent him from playing as last week he was described as a "healthy scratch" not as missing the game due to injury.

I know he was a healthy scratch but was under the impression he dinged up again. If healthy he must be so incredibly out of synch it would hurt the team to roll him out there. I'll trust Harbaugh. If the Niners can't beat the Rams without Braylon Edwards then I'm not sure they deserve a spot in the playoffs, nevermind a first round bye.

Wouldnt mind picking him up to get the San Fran playbook prior to playing them in the playoffs.

I'm not saying that Edwards is a massive difference maker, just that the timing is very off, especially with so many targets hobbled already. I'm worried about the "If the Niners can't beat the Rams" attitude. Overconfidence is part of the recipe for a big upset. Just ask the Saints when it comes to the Rams.
