Braylon Edwards signs with 49ers (1 Viewer)

Thoughts/projections on Edwards this season? Can he put up WR2/3 stats??
Is Alex Smith still the QB? I think we know the answer...
Smith put up about 2300 yards in about 9 games in a terrible offensive system last year. Sanchez did about 900 more in a full 16 game season. I expect the 49er passing offense to be much better this season & would expect Edwards to improve on last season, when he was the #2 WR on a poor passing offense. Smith isn't a great QB, but put him in a decent system & he can compete with what Sanchez did last year.

almost none of those yards came on deep routes which is the only routes edwards knows how to run. this is a horrible fit

We'll see. It's not like Alex Smith is the long term answer. Braylon Edwards isn't some old timer with only 1 year left.Kaepernick has a strong arm.

But Braylon's contract is only for 1 year.

Really, I think it was how the Jets used him last season. His 17 yard average was a full yard over anything he had accomplished in previous seasons. Josh Morgan averaged almost 16 yards a catch in the 49ers inept offense. Might not be a perfect fit, but Edwards should be fine & I would expect him to fall in the middle of the WR 3 range.

There's always a chance he sticks around if it's a good match. They'll at least have the option. And there's nothing wrong with giving the qb (whoever it is) another weapon this year. As a Braylon owner I would be unhappy. As a Niners fan I'm excited.

Probably the worst place he could have landed.

He's not going to have a good year (Smith to Kaepernick transition / Smith won't go deep), will have to signs for peanuts next year. At least in MN, Balt or AZ, he had a shot at rehabbing his value in FA next offseason.

I haven't watched a ton of Braylon Edwards, but it seems like Antonio Bryant is a reasonable comp. Bryant put up 40/733/3 in 2006 with Alex Smith at QB (averaging over 18 yards/catch). I think that is a reasonable projection.

As a Braylon owner I am pleased with him landing in SF. I think its a better place than where he was in NY! I agree that its not a great landing spot but it could have been much worse! I say he improves on his numbers in SF.

65 catches

1100 yards

8 TDs

A low end #2 and a high end #3,

The 9ers picked Alex Smith # 1 overall in 2005, Vernon Davis # 6 overall in 2006, and Patrick Willis # 11 overall in 2007.

In the last few days they have added the 2005 #3, Braylon Edwards, the 2005 #9, CB Carlos Rogers, the 2006 # 8 S Donte Whitner, not to mention last year's pickup of 2007 # 9, Ted Ginn.

I don't know if it's unusual for a team to amass that many former high first round picks, but it looks like Baalke was right in sitting out the initial land rush and waiting for the prices to drop a bit.

Seems a bad place for a 1 year contract.

Maybe I missed something, but why wasn't St. Louis a viable option?

Regardless of where he ended up the best news for the team that acquired him (San Fran in this case) is he is playing on a one year deal...my guess is he had a much bigger and longer payday in-mind and if the Niners are lucky he will have a chip on his shoulder as he's playing for his next contract...

68/1050/7 (15.5 ypc)

I think this is a reasonable projection for Braylon. As stated before, the jets were a run heavy team where Braylon was the WR2. I think we can easily say he is the WR1 in SF, which also has a run based system.

I wouldn't call it a good fit, but Braylon is a talented WR, in position to be #1 WR in SF

This projection is also barring any legal trouble or injuries. Another factor could be the Smith to Kapernick transition which is more than likely to happen in the 2nd half of this season.

Yea, I mean lightning can strike (DAnderson and CLE)but if I am on a 1 year deal to prove I can get a multi year deal. I would have taken 1-2 mil less, to go to a team with a strong QB that can lead me to 1000 yards easily.

I hear the 2007 #1 is still available.Sometimes prices are low for a reason.

I think this is a decent spot for him. I don't know how well he'll do just because Davis is still really the #1 option there, but I could see a 50/800/5 season coming relatively easily, with decent upside beyond that. Pretty good value if his ADP stays in the 9th/10th round and you can get him as a 3rd or 4th receiver. I don't know how much of a bump he'll get, but it's probably not as big a climb in ADP as would have happened in Arizona.

A few risks of course, the biggest of which is probably if Smith gets pulled for Kaepernick sometime mid-season. The second is probably that Crabtree puts it together, but I'm becoming less optimistic about that with every training camp he misses.

Schefter reported that only about $1 million is guaranteed. He'll need to catch 90 passes and make the Pro Bowl to get the full value.

:goodposting: Unreal he only gets $1m in base salary. What stopped AZ from signing this guy? I don't understand but I do think he is the bonafide WR1 in SF this year. Crabtree will not take away his targets.

You and I argued alot about the 2005 draft. Glad you finally got your boy Braylon.Thought we might add your other huckleberry, Michael Huff, since you were adamant that he should have been taken over VD

a note to anyone collecting data on his perceived value now. in a current dynasty rookie draft (non-ppr) with 25-player roster, edwards was just dealt for pick 2.10.

Apparently the idiot who traded him did not shop him around..... He did not get full value! This is not Braylon's value. I would think that rookie pick 1.5 - 1.10 is where his value should be.......

I was adamant that is was stupid to sign a tight end to a team that had holes all over the place. I didn't have anything personally against Davis. As predicted, the Niners still suck after five years, and they've gone 33-47 since they took Davis. They would have sucked less with Huff.

Is Braylon almost back? Will he continue to be irrelevant or is there some fantasy value for desperate owners?

I picked him up mainly because I have Crabtree and I am hedging my bet on whomever gets the bigger role this week. Not really interested in having two 9ers receivers, but he was on the waiver wire and I had an open spot, so I took a shot.

I think this week will tell us a lot.
