Breaking News - Terrell Owens Rushed to local hospital (1 Viewer)

So with the background laid, I feel this "suicide attempt" was either a major cry for help or a publicity stunt.
Anyone committing suicide as a publicity stunt is by definition begging for help. I really dont buy the publicity angle as very likely at all. The upcoming Philly game is the biggest spotlight in the NFL already- thats why im leery about this whole report. The guy has something to live for- everything indicate he's been obsessed with that game. Obviously this is an issue far bigger than football, but it just seems really weird that he would try to kill himself now. If he's a manic-depressive he should be riding a huge high the next few weeks- he's set up to have a huge superman-like comeback against his former team. Im not claiming to be an expert or certainly have any inside TO knowledge, but this just doesnt seem to fit. Im still very open minded that the cops may have misunderstood what they were seeing- young healthy guys dont often fish out on their meds, they may have been assuming suicide attempt and read into the situation what they expected to find. Im just saying its plausible.
This is awfully naive. Beautiful women think they are too fat and starve themselves to death. Rich and successful professionals commit suicide. Mothers kill their babies. They are called disorders for a reason, and that reason is afflicted folks do not look at things like normal people would. I'm not saying this obviously was a suicide attempt, but I am saying a person who is on the cusp of suicide is not thinking about football games. Some don't even think about the pain they'll cause their own family.

Michael Irvin just said according to TO, TO's pastor was at the house when this all went down.
Michael Irvin was referring to someone else.
 His exact words were, "TO told me his pastor and Kim were there... and he (TO) told them he wasn't feeling right"
I backed it up on my Tivo, so I'm re-listening to it. But I thought it was about someone else.
Please post the exact words once you've reviewed the piece.

I like how ESPN is calling what TO tells the media in the next few minutes will be his "version" of the events. As though TO wouldn't know what happened.

The media isn't going to let this go. They are going to say the police "version" and TO's "version" are both reflective of a "truth" in between. This is selling to many papers and making too high of ratings.

Doesn't the police report state that the he put a couple of more pills in his mouth after his friend tried to dislodge the others?
no, well If I'm reading it corretly, just 2rest was a guess by her based on # of pills in bottle on Sep 18th and him bragging of taking 5 pills

I have to agree with an angle I just read on PFT. I'm not assuming anything is true or false in this situation, but it will be a tremendous disservice to T.O. if his advisors tell him to pretend he is not clinically depressed if he actually is. If he needs help, he needs help, and holding a press conference with PR folks is not going to secure that help.

Just got back from working out.Not to say I told you so, but I told you so about 10-12 pages back there when everyone was in hysterics.Media sensationalism. Its about ratings and selling papers. Amazing how these guys get aways with it sometimes. And this with something we all found out the truth about - now start thinking about all the non-high profile cases that they never have to answer for misreporting. Simply irresponsible.Peace.out.HS
I dont know how much is sensationalism and how much is desire to be the first out of the gate with the story. Look at us falling over ourselves, hammering away at keys and links trying to be the first guy to find and report news on a FF website. These news outlets have something riding on being the place people go for news first. Provided they dont say its confirmed and thats its "speculation" at this time, they keep themselves out of trouble and keep US tuned in waiting with bated breath.
I agree and disagree. They all want to be first, but they all first have the responsibility of being accurate. Sensationalism happens where the facts end and the specualation begins. And that began very early this morning with most of the news stations.
I hate the media as much as anyone, but anymore they dont have much choice. With a dozen competing TV news outlets reporting the story, plus radio, plus the internet, there simply isnt anyway to investigate and substantiate before going live with the news. If you waited for all that, millions of people are already at another outlet getting constant updates. They are forced to get a butt in the field immediately and put the story together as it unfolds and tie up the loose ends as they go along. In a "we want it now" world with so much competition, its never going to get better. You gotta come out immediately with "We just received an unsubstantiated report that _______, lets go directly to Lance Pants in the field with this developing situation. Lance.....?"

Not sure if any of you were watching the web feed from NBC5i.com but Deion Sanders just came out of Owen's home and said that TO will address the media at 2:15 at Valley Ranch (Cowboys training facility)

From Todd Archer ...The Cowboys announced that T.O. will be making a statement at his condo within 45 minutes.
what time specifically? maybe I'll drive down there since its about 2 minutes away...
Radio just said it would be in the next 5 minutes.
Just saw on ESPN News that it'll be at 1:30pm Eastern, or about 17 minutes from now.
Now they're reporting it will be at 3:15pm Eastern, another 1:45-minute delay, at Valley Ranch. Gotta get the story straight...

To quote Michael Irvin:

He was getting back to trying to play this weekend against the Titans and that's all that he was talking about so... and also Kim said to me... she said 'Michael, it would be quite a situation for him -- and I'm just expanding on what she said -- to try to commit suicide in front of the pastor, in front of us.' And that's what she said to me.
[sic]Apparentely I also heard it wrong the first time. I believe he was referring hypothetically. I doubt Irvin would go one minute from saying that TO said earlier that he did not try to attempt to saying that he did.(sorry, not "hypothetically". More like "kill myself to play well". But this is my personal take on the statement.

they just had blurb from Deion on Sirius who actually spoke with TO and TO was laughing at the reports of a suicide attempt. He'll have press conference later today. Look at MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Maybe he just wants to clear the air, if the whole country thought you tried to commit suicide when you didn't, wouldn't you want to clear the air?
You just never know. If this truly was a huge misunderstanding, TO is suddenly right where he and Drew Rosenhaus want him to be. The eyes of the world are on him, he's vindicated, and all he did was get sick from his painkillers? You cant buy that type of publicity.

I just saw Deion with my own eyes say 2:15. I doubt he was stating EST since we are in CST here. So TO will address media at 2:15 CDT

No. As terrified as physicians and hospitals are of malpractice suits these days, there is no way they would release someone who, the night before, supposedly downed 35 pills and said he was trying to hurt himself. That goes for an ordinary citizen. Now, multiply that by the fact that this is a high-profile athlete whose every move commands boundless media attention, and whose multimillion dollar estate would have quite the wrongful death cause of action against anyone who released him too early, if he went out and hurt himself again. The Cowboys would have a lawsuit as well.

No chance the police report was accurate as to those details. None.
People keep calling the police report into question, but it seemed to me like it just stated facts. There was an empty prescription bottle and someone told them he had only taken 5 before. Everyone is acting like the police report said he swallowed 35 pills(I will agree that there is an implication of attempted suicide in the report, but it could still be factual without Owens having attempted suicide). For all we know the rest could be in a pill box somewhere, or he disposed of them when he found out he was allergic, or the person who said he only took 5 before that night was mistaken, or any number of scenarios that don't involve suicide. The only real concerning thing about the police report is that he tried to take 2 more pills while the police were there. It's still all speculation at this point.
It seems to me RP in the police report means Reporting Party or something like that, and is referring to his publicist, not Responding Paramedic. If so, he was trying to take those 2 pills when she was there, not when the police were there.
I assumed RP meant Responding Party, not Reporting Party. In the report, they mention RP #1 at least once, indicating that there were more than 1.

You can do all of that without misrepresenting the facts. What you can/should do is simply reiterate the facts and ADD facts as they are made available. In our cut-corners country this is just another example of people not doing there jobs thoroughly.

This is all Donovan McNabb's fault. If he only were more conditioned during the Super Bowl game, they would have won...and this would have changed history...making T.O. and McNabb best buddies...and therefore no need for the meds. Where's Doc and Marty McFly when you need them??
McNabb was very well conditioned. He threw the game, pure and simple. But your point remains...

TOs allowed to change his mind

So if these reports of suicide are not true, who is more to blame for this trainwreck: 1) The media rushing to get the news out first, or 2) the public and their insatiable appetite for controversy?

anyone have a link to the press conference??? thx!
it'll be on ESPN
WEEI sports radio will be carrying live...you can stream their feed online at weei.com...But they are also reporting the Deion Sanders just poked his head out and said TO will not be speaking at his house...he'll be speaking at the Cowboy's facility at 3:15 EST...
Did Deion see his shadow? If yes, does that mean 4 more hours of coverage?

if it's not true, i don't blame the media as they had a police report stating as such, which is generally enough to release a story. but as more info comes out, they need to start backing away from the suicide headline.

My best guess is that it was a half-hearted suicide attempt, but now TO is all embarrassed so he's going to deny that was the case.

DC.com's Official report per Spagnola

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IRVING, Texas - A Dallas Police Department spokesman Wednesday morning very tersely said there would be no criminal investigation into the Tuesday night incident involving Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens being rushed to the hospital after suffering an adverse reaction to pain medication prescribed to him a week ago following surgery to repair his broken hand.

In the midst of wild speculation of an attempted suicide by Owens, who reportedly took an overdose of pain medication, Dallas Police Department Lt. Rick Watson at a 10 a.m. news conference held in downtown Dallas said, "In the course of this, in our investigation, we've determined that at this time, this is not a criminal offense. This is a medical type of situation in the incident that occurred."

Lt. Watson didn't leave his statement at that. He reiterated, "The Dallas Police Department does not have any other investigation going on, on this incident. Any information that you need, you'll have to contact Mr. Owens or you'll have to contact the medical staff.

"Do I need to repeat any of that?"

Multiple people with knowledge of this sort of incident and these types of investigations maintain that if this indeed was determined to be a suicide attempt the DPD would not be allowing Owens to leave Baylor Medical Center, as he already has, and that it would subject Owens to a 72-hour psychological investigation.

That Lt. Watson said one more time, "It's not a criminal offense" seems to refute the notion that whatever happened from the time a 911 call was placed Tuesday evening by Owens' publicist Kim Etheredge and the 10 a.m. news conference was not the suicide attempt that has been widely reported.

Etheredge told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Owens "is fine . . . he will be leaving the hospital today." Owens in fact not only was leaving the hospital this morning, but to make a statement for reporters outside his residence early Wednesday afternoon.

Cowboys officials have made no comment so far on the incident, other than to point out a normal schedule of practice, open locker room and head coach Bill Parcells' daily news conference was planned for Wednesday as the team continues preparation for Sunday's game at Tennessee. Parcells' news conference planned for 1:30 p.m. (CDT) can be heard on DallasCowboys.com.

Owens has been taking pain medication for the past week, following his surgery on Sept. 18 to place a metal plate over his fractured fourth metacarpal on his right hand to help facilitate healing. In fact, Parcells said last Wednesday Owens had a bad reaction to pain medication and was sent home while the team had its first workout during the bye week. Owens returned to The Ranch on Thursday and actually did some running with the team on Friday.

As of Tuesday, when the Cowboys returned to practice from their bye weekend, Parcells hadn't ruled out the possibility of Owens returning Sunday against the Titans (noon, CDT), a potential 13-day turnaround from last Monday's surgery. Owens didn't practice Tuesday but began catching passes, and Parcells said he thought Owens would participate to some extent at practice Wednesday.

According to Etheredge, Owens experienced increased pain and discomfort Tuesday evening, causing him to take a few of his pain medication pills. She also told the Star-Telegram Owens had previously taken some supplements and that "it kicked in a reaction.

"When I went to grab him, he was out of it. That's why I called 911."

Etheredge said Owens did not have his stomach pumped at the hospital and did not vomit, as was initially reported by several local news affiliates.
