The flip side that causes this is that if he gets hurt and never plays again, how much money would he have made with a long term contract and a huge signing bonus. It's a tough gamble to take, I can see the players' reluctance to take 1 year deal. That said, the Bears ended up being one of my keepers for this year so I'm glad to see them all ready to go.gferrell20 said:

By rule, even if the Bears changed their mind at some point during or after camp, the two sides could NOT sign a long term deal until after this season. The only option was to play for the 7.2 mil this year, or not play at all, and that would have been the stupid move. Injury risk, thats why its stupid. Many significant injuries occur during training camp and he could have easily held out until the very end. He could have stayed in shape on his own and come in with a week or so to get into game shape. His teammates and coaches would or should understand that move as being part of the business of football, and something that veterans do regularly without adverse consequences.
The Bears will NOT resign him - as I don't think they can afford him with Grossman, Berrian UFA after '07 and Tommie Harris after '08.Furthermore, I sincerely hope that Angelo slaps the TRANSITION tag on him, so the Bears get SOME compensation for Briggs should he leave after this season. I highly doubt he would though, as that would be a pretty dirty trick - although he promised not to slap the FRANCHISE tag on him.

That would be ruthless - it certainly wouldn't be well-received by potential free agents when considering the Bears. Also, if the Bears use the transition tag on Briggs, I believe it means they can't use the franchise tag that year (or obviously, the transition tag on someone else). They might want to have that option available depending on how things go with Berrian and Grossman.
