Browns name rookie Brandon Weeden starting quarterback

Rookie Brandon Weeden will start for the Browns at quarterback in the preseason opener Friday in Detroit and, barring injury, will be the starter for the regular season, Coach Pat Shurmur announced after practice Monday.

Pat Shurmur = Money grab...hope you folks show him less courtesy out the door than you did Mangini.

Not to be confused with This Guy.

The Browns kinda have to do it to justify the pick, but it's a pretty iffy move IMO. Will be interesting if the ownership change short-circuits this, especially if things don't go well. Makes for an interesting story, regardless.

Considering Colt McCoy is their other option, starting Weeden is a no-brainer.

I don't think there was ever any doubt he would be a starter from week 1.

Yup. I don't know why this is news. I know there were some arguing the other way but I can't see how anything BUT this would be the result. I really think some people are going to be surprised at how well he plays. I think it gives value to little and Gordon.

Poor Browns fans. The real Browns up and leave for Baltimore and Cleveland gets stuck (every year) with a roster that looks like it belongs to an expansion team. GL with Grandpa Weeden. Maybe he can be Kelly Holcomb part II.

I'll be surprised if he has better numbers than McCoy did last year.

at the very least, the Browns will allow him to attempt a pass longer than 15 yards, which is more than you can say about last year.

First preseason action with mixed reviews but I think he played better than the reports indicate.

Here is an excellent breakdown of his deep throw to rookie WR Travis Benjamin.

Go to the link that has photo-stills that breakdown the key components of this play.

Since I can only post the text here is the technical aspects of this play on an excellent write-up.

Rufio's Mini Recap: Brandon Weeden Goes Deep

It was the first week of the preseason, so the game was practically meaningless. But I don't care, I'm a little excited anyway. Why? Because Brandon Weeden showed the capability to read a defense on the fly and to complete passes deep down the field.

We came out in a 3 WR set with 1 TE and RB Montario Hardesty in the backfield

============

We had called a WCO staple: the shallow crossing route with a deep square crosser behind it. The idea is to get the square in route behind the shallow crosser and to put that LB highest toward the top of the screen in a bind: he can't cover both guys.

The outside receivers will run deep routes with an outside release to clear the CBs away from the shallow cross and to keep the safeties from coming down on that route combination. Hardesty will be in the protection and will probably check-release.

The playcall was a good one. The only problem is that on the snap, Detroit's secondary shifts and brings a safety down into the route combination while dropping the other to the deep middle third of the field:

============

As Weeden drops back, you can see that there are four defenders in the area of the route combination. Detroit could effectively double-team both receivers there.

As Weeden is reading this play, he realizes that he has WR Travis Benjamin--possibly the fastest player on our team--singled up with a cornerback and no safety help over the top (because that safety dropped down on the snap). As the saying goes: "if he's even, he's leavin'."

============

I'd like to note that in the image above Weeden has anything but a clean pocket. The Almighty Joe Thomas is allowing himself to be pushed back into Weeden (Joe works in mysterious ways), and there are two players at Weeden's feet. He is throwing this ball off his back foot.

============

Regardless, he drops the ball in, ahead of the CB and into Benjamin's arms. Benjamin does have to slow up a little for this throw, but still easily makes the catch on his way out of bounds. A perfect throw would have been about a yard inside, allowing Benjamin a chance to catch and run, but you'd rather have a safe completion and a 30+ yard gain than an overthrow.

Again, Browns fans need to keep in mind that this is only the first week of the preseason, but if Weeden can continue to flash this sort of ability while developing any sort of consistency over the next few weeks it will be a very encouraging sign.

===========
Once again, go to the link for the photographs showing every point noted, excellent write-up.You can read the text but reading the text and seeing each aspect visually as it develops really gives an insight as to why this is indicative of a really good play by Weeden and is a good sign especially considering this was his first NFL action.

That's really saying something considering McCoy was the 2nd worst starting QB in the entire season last year, better than only Blaine Gabbert. If Weeden starts all 16 games, I think he'll easily better McCoy's numbers, as it really wouldn't be very difficult at all.

His marijuana CA ID card has lapsed.
Probably cuz I think he's in jail right now. Hopefully the same fate won't happen to CB Weedman.-QG
