Browns Place Winslow on PUP

-- Browns Place Winslow on PUP --

Tue Jul 24, 2007 --from **************

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Browns have placed TE Kellen Winslow II (knee) on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Sorry if this is a honda, but I searched and didn't find anything. Anybody know if this is the PUP for the first 6 weeks of the season?

Pre-season PUP is different. I don't know the exact dates, but it PUP to worry about is announced close to the start of the season.

League sources have informed The Orange and Brown Report that the team has officially changed Kellen Winslow's roster status to "Active/Physically Unable to Perform".

According to Scout.com's Adam Caplan, Winslow can be removed from this status at any time up until the point that final rosters are set. At that point, the team would have to remove him from PUP status, or he would not be able to play for the first six weeks of the season.

At present, though, the designation opens up an additional roster spot on the team.

Speculating, the roster status change likely means that Winslow won't be used in the opening days of training camp, and the Browns wish to use another roster spot either to evaluate a player or bring in another tight end to run plays starting on Friday.

The OBR's Lane Adkins comments that the status change "comes as no surprise, as Winslow was to be limited at best in the beginning stages of training camp"

Teams generally load up a lot of players on the preseason PUP list because it gives them more spots to evaluate other players. They can come off the list at any time in training camp without any danger of missing time in the regular season. This is not a big deal and people should not be all that concerned. IIRC, players can't be added to the preseason PUP list once training camp starts so they need to do this before camp starts.

I was at the Browns training camp today. Not only was Winslow practicing, but he was flying all over the field. In no way did he look limited. If he can stay healthy, he could be in for a monster year.
