Buffalo Bills have a shot at getting Vernon Davis? (1 Viewer)

I know there is a lot of speculation that the Bills will draft Ngata. But after reading an article on BuffaloBills.com, Assistant GM Tom Modrak's reply really made me think.

If Vernon Davis slips to 8, would he be hard for you to pass up?

Tom Modrak: "It would be hard to pass up. He's a talented guy. That's one of those decisions where we'd take the whole 15 minutes. He's a very talented guy that you don't get that often. We have some players (at tight end) now and we're in better shape than we were."

I know the kid is fantastic and the Bills seem satisfied at TE right now (although I'm not). The Bills definitely need to fix their OLine and DLine problems as well as their secondary. But how could you pass on a kid with the ability like this? I think of him and imagine someone like Tony Gonzalez in a Bills uniform. Jim Kelly defended Losman saying it wasn't fair to throw him under the bus because he hasn't had things in his favor. The team hasn't been good, he was hurt his rookie season, the line isn't there etc. With Lee Evans, Price, A.Davis, Reed, McGahee and V.Davis, Losman could only get better.

He'd have alot of help and although the line hasn't improved much, they still have 10 picks in the draft. Taking him with the 8th would definitely give them another weapon, which they desperately need after trading Moulds. Davis hasn't been the answer and Price hasn't been the same WR since leaving Buffalo last time.

What do you guys think, a possibility? If he were there I'd like to think they would take him but the Bills have been disappointing me lately so if they took a Kicker in the 1st I wouldn't be overly suprised.

I would :X if this happened!!

I will make this call!!!

We'll have just another brick in the wall come Saturday!!!

I think with needs elsewhere, and Everett supposed to come back, I might project someone else there, even if he does fall there.

I think it's possible that Davis is there, BTW. With all of San Fran's problems, I dunno how Vernon to the 49ers is a done deal by any means. There is more uncertainty at the top of tyhis draft than I can recall in years.

No one has a handle on the Saints, Titans, Jets, or Raiders. A lot of craziness could ensue. A TE going #6 is a big leap, IMO.

I'd be extremely disappointed if the Bills took Davis. Championship teams are built starting in the trenches. The offensive line has stunk for almost a decade now. Winston Justice should be the pick. If not Justice, then either Ngata or Bunkley. Their defense really took a huge hit after losing Pat Williams. They need a guy up front to cause havoc.

Heck, I'd even love Huff over Davis. A tremendous playmaker in the secondary could make a huge difference for this defense.

That's not to knock Davis, I just don't think that TE is a hugely important position overall. And I don't think that Davis is a lock to be a star NFL player either. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just think that he has fairly high bust potential. His stock shot up a ton after the combine and that just makes me nervous.

For the same reasons that I've been saying the 49ers should take VD, I think the Bills would be foolish to pass on him. Davis will take pressure of McGahee because defense will be force to play nickel since you can't line up a LB against him. He will also help Losman develop since he'll have an easy outlet whenever he gets pressured.

Ive stated this before, but the Bills taking Ngata does not make any sense. If they take anyone it'll be Bunkley. You can't stick a 340lb DT in a Cover-2 scheme that asks the DTs to constantly penetrate upfield. Ngata, the athletic freak that he is, would still be a below average Cover 2 DT.

Bunkley is the "flavour of the week" right now.

The Bills appear to have gone cold on Ngata.

All of which could just be draft bull.

But apparently they still do have a lot of confidence in Kevin Everett. And this was before the draft bull started spinning. So I think Vernon Davis to the Bills is highy unlikely should he be available.

No chance the Bills get Davis. He won't make it past San Fran, even though I think San Fran should draft Huff themselves. He is a playmaker and a great team guy that would give the 49ers a huge upgrade on defense.

Last time the 49ers drafted a big name safety it worked out ok.

Ngata is like 340, so unless he's 7'3 I wouldn't use the word athletic beside him. Bunkley is the athletic beast and he is a better fit for sure. Huff and Justice would be better fits and cover big needs as well.

I'd love to see the Bills draft Davis.

We can get OTs and DTs later in the draft. At #8, I just want the best player available. If Davis is there, he'll probably be the best guy on the board overall. And it's not like the Bills are currently stacked at TE or anything.

Why bother covering anyone in a pattern when every down is a jail break for your front seven? You can have all the skill position talent in the world, but if the line can't open a hole for the RB and can't protect the QB for more than two seconds, it doesn't mean jack.Sure Davis can get open downfield if you put a LB on him, but that's gonna take more time than Losman will consistently have to throw.

You want to take pressure off the QB? Protect him long enough to make a throw. A great pass catching TE is a luxury pick. Buffalo is in no position to be making luxury picks.

They have more than enough talent at the offensive skill positions to be a good offense, if they can get themselves a line.

:goodposting: I have seen a few scenarios where Ferguson actually falls to the Bills. If that happened I would automatically consider the draft a success for Buffalo and be a happy man. Barring that, I wouldn't be upset at all if they took Justice at the #8 spot. I'd prefer that they trade down a few spots and take him but I think that he does have the skill and desire to be worth the #8.

I could easily see Davis falling to Buf. If the 3 QBs go in the top 7, plus Bush, Mario, Brick, and Hawk.

If that happened, my guess is that Buf would try to trade down. But if they can't, Davis is considered one of the elite players in this draft. Hard to pass on that.

If Ferguson falls to the Bills, they jump at the chance to draft him. No question.

If Davis falls, the Bills are :) also. He would be a great pick up. An asset to the development of either Losman or Nall.

But since TE is not a critical point (assuming Everett is on schedule), they can work the trade angle. That's why I think Modrak says he'd take the entire 15 minutes.

The 8 position this year is not good for Buffalo. Ngata is not a natural fit, and I think it is too early for Bunkley and Justice. But noone at this point seems desperate to trade to 8.

If they can trade down and get someone like Justice or Bunkley and add a pick, they do it. If not, they draft Davis and :) and hope to get a quality OL in round 2.
