Build a FRANCHISE draft (1 Viewer)

Who are your favorite and least favorite picks of the second round? Excluding my picks I would vote:

Favorite:

Adrian Peterson - The best RB by far. Can take a Ponder-led offense to the playoffs.

Least Favorite:

Mangold - good player, but too early for interior line I believe.

 
3.04 Houston Selects - Brian Orakpo OLB

Houston is going for a 3-4 heavy blitzing defense. One of the critical positions is the rush backer. Orakpo is a monster off the edge, his torn pec occurred week 2 last season so injury is not a concern. Hes 26 years old and will return to play in his hometown of Houston.

Ooh I'll play!Favorite: Charles Johnson, DE - For some reason I passed on him because I thought he was older, but he's only 27 this season and is one of the best pass-rushers in the game.Least Favorite: Vince Wilfork, DT - It's not that he isn't good but his age and declining production mean he isn't worthy of a pick this high.
 
Ravens select Luke Kuechly. (On phone can someone update google doc and pm next up)

I still dont know if I am running a 3-4 or 4-3 but with Willis and Kuechly I have the versatility to run either, or some kind of hybrid.

 
With the 6th pick in the 3rd round, the Colts select another defensive star, Cameron Wake, Defensive End.

Pressure from the DE spot will make my coverage look even better for Haden.

1.27 Tony Romo, QB

2.6 joe Haden, CB

3.6 Cameron Wake, DE

Nice pick. He's 31 but he was the best pass-rushing 4-3 DE in the league last season.
 
3.7 Buffalo Bills - Mike Iupati, OG

Figured I would need a big running game picking that late. Got to start up front. Iupati next to Staley works damn good in SF.

 
I'd like to recommend we start a thread for the "Draft" and a thread for people to critic/discuss/whine. I believe we ended up having to do this last time as well.

3.8 Chiefs select Marcell Dareus

Dareus should be a force next to Calais Campbell and is scheme-versatile like Campbell. I could run a 4-3 with both of them on the interior or a 3-4 with Dareus as the penetrating nose tackle.

That's what the Google spreadsheet is for. I'm also keeping track on a personal spreadsheet. I just think having a separate thread would mean less comments and reaction to picks. I don't think it's a good idea.

3.9 Dolphins select Randall Cobb, WR

As much as I wanted to shore up my lines better, I wanted a play maker on the offense who can also potentially return kicks for me. The fact he is a top 10 WR in most rankings and is only 22 shows how lethal this guy is going to be in the coming seasons.

 
3.10 Greg Hardy DE Falcons

don't want to offend RBM but Hardy is another physical freak to bookend JPP. 24 years old , 6-4 , 280 , 11 sacks & is stout against the run. Love my line but wonder how neglected the rest of the team will look after going DE-DT-DE to start.

 
I think in a draft like this, without an elite franchise QB, you have to do something bold to create an exceptional strength to compensate. Having a draft of this style means all of the teams will have about equal talent overall and naturally the teams with an elite QB are at an advantage. With my 1.1 team, because I have the Aaron Rodgers advantage, I plan on simply going BPA regardless of position. I am taking a different approach to my 1.25 team though and am trying to focus the elite talent to create a unique combination that is difficult and unusual to play against.

 
3.11 - Cleveland Browns select C.J. Spiller, RB

Continuing my trend of taking young offensive playmakers here. C.J. is arguably almost as good as Adrian Peterson, and he is more explosive in the receiving and return games. He's a bit older than I'd like (turns 26 this year) but he has extremely low mileage due to his timeshare with FJax.

So I go another round without a QB, lineman, or defensive player. It's risky I know, but I am really excited about this team and believe I can make up for it with great picks in later rounds.

1. A.J. Green WR

2. Demaryius Thomas WR

3. C.J. Spiller RB

I don't think you'll find anybody arguing he is equally as good as ADP. Good pick though. Your offense is scary and has some serious speed.

 
I also do not like the Vince Wilfork pick. Having sobered up a bit, I would have taken Dareus if I'd had my board on me. I suppose that's the price you pay when plans go awry...

I really like the Orakpo pick as well - I was hoping to put him outside of Watt and get some serious pass rush.

I'm not so sure about that (though I did say "almost as good")They both had 6.0 YPC last year. Spiller had a higher elusiveness rating (53 missed tackles on 207 runs vs. 64 on 348).I'm not going to say Spiller was better in 2012, but I do think AP's numbers will go down in 2013 while I expect Spiller's to go way up with a better coach/more carries.

Great fantasy team, but I don't know about drafting as you have without having a high end QB. Having two top 10 WRs is a luxury; there is a reason NFL teams won't pay more than one WR top money. I also don't think Thomas and Green are a great fit together. Won't name names, but there are guys still out there who I think could help your team just as much as Thomas, as they'd offer something different. Don't mean to offend, just sharing my thoughts.

:yes: I think you'll find yourself wishing you had room for skill players in later rounds as value picks fall.
 
I think I know what ExaltedOne's plan is regarding the rest of his offense and if he pulls it off, his offense is going to be scary.

I do think Julio would have been a better pick than Thomas.

Not enough balls to go around imho. Like all the players but Spiller's ability to lineup wide is negated with these two stud WRs

:goodposting: With my 1.12 team I was able to get an elite QB in Matt Ryan, so I am able to go a more standard, conservative draft. Hence my Clady pick in round 2. By the time the draft got to me at 1.22, 15 QBs had been selected. None of the guys left were guys I'd want to trust my franchise to, and taking one that early would have put me at a serious disadvantage. Instead, I combined 3 elite young offensive playmakers. It gives me a distinct advantage that other teams have to gameplan for. BTW I like what you are doing with your 1.25 team. It's like the evil twin of my team.

:confused: Spiller can line up in the slot...or either of my receivers can to take advantage of mismatches.Plenty of balls to go around in this day-and-age. 150 targets for each of my stud receivers, and 50 or so for Spiller, is still only 350 attempts. Most offenses are throwing 500+ times a season now, so that leaves 150 for tightends and other receivers.

I don't take offense. I look at Thomas/Green as a better version of Julio/Roddy. They are similar players as well.I knew that when I decided on this strategy that I would get some criticism, but these guys are young studs with great character and work ethic.I'd rather have elite guys at the skill positions and get less heralded guys elsewhere. There will be plenty of value at every position.

You're right. I was going off of what he got last season. The offense I envision has him being used in many different ways. Out of the backfield, in the slot, or out wide with DT or AJ in the slot. These three guys will create a lot of mismatches that my (yet to be named) QB can take advantage of. I was just trying to show that there are plenty of balls to go around. In fact, I could bump him up to 100 targets (which is more than what Sproles got) and I'd still have plenty of balls to go around.

Top 10? Maybe for fantasy but not for real life.
