In a 4-3 isn't Cushing more of a OLB? Isn't that what he played earlier in his career? I think moving him there isn't fully utilizing him.

3.32 Saints select Eric Weddle
4.1 Saints select Bobby Wagner
All of the elite offensive skill positions players are gone and I see a ton of value in the mid-rounds so I am going to pass up on drafting a RB/WR/TE. I was targeting Joeckel or Monroe at LT but both were taken. Combined with having Aaron Rodgers and his ability to make the rest of the offense better, I decided to go with two defensive players.
The defensive lineman available fell into two categories to me:
1. Proven veterans who were in the twilight of their prime
2. Younger players who either had shown glimpses of their potential but I wasn't comfortable taking this high or were solid players but did not provide the impact I wanted
I ultimately decided on taking Weddle and Wagner. Weddle is one of the best free safeties in the game. He is versatile and is great in both run support and coverage. Wagner is an ideal 4-3 MLB who is a 3 down player.

I think he'd last longer with real GMs running this draft. I don't mean that to be offensive. This is a fantasy football message board, so I can understand the sentiment, but the reality is that Johnson is a 31-32 year old WR that has had a lot of recent injury issues. I'd imagine that NFL teams would be stocking up elsewhere at more important positions at this point of the draft.'RBM said:

Aside from 2011, he's missed 3 games since 2008. He has not had a lot of recent injury issues

I definitely was taking Weddle with one of my picks. I almost went with Hall as my other pick but decided against going with 3 DBs in the first 4 rounds.

He's a lot more valuable for a franchise with an elite QB in a win now mode rather than a team that is emphasizing defense and youth. I wouldn't be able to post fast enough had he lasted to 3.32. Almost took him at 2.32, dreaming of Rodgers to Johnson.

2011 is fairly recent. In 2012 he was slowed earlier in the year with minor tweaks. The age is the bigger factor to me though. WRs slow down considerably by age 33-34 - most fall out of the league around that time and the few that stick around are diminished. There are a few exceptions of course but really not enough to take the risk in Round 3.

There's been a lot of picks in this draft that are heavily "fantasy football" influenced imo. That's not a bad thing. I think LT fell much farther than they would have in real drafts. But my only real point on this was that in a real draft I think Johnson would have fallen even further. I may be wrong about that though.I think having a franchise type QB makes it less imperitive to get stud type WRs. Guys like Favre, Rodgers, Brady etc. have been able to produce with average talents at the position.

With the start of the new round, what are your favorite/least favorite picks of round 3? Excluding my picks, mine are

[*]Jarius Byrd - One of the best if not the best FS in the game. He is a big impact player.
[*]Vernon Davis - A complete tight end who can block well and has blazing speed and good hands. Getting him as the 4th tight end taken is a bargain.
Least Favorite
[*]Aaron Hernandez - Not a bad pick in a vacuum, but I have him on a whole different tier than Vernon Davis who is truly a complete player in my eyes.
It's tough to pick a least favorite because I didn't find any of the picks to really be too far out of place. Cobb is questionable to a degree and the pick has received discussion. However, I understand it even if I wouldn't make it.

You could look at it that way, or you could look at it like he's missed 12/48 games the last 3 seasons. That's 25%. As he gets older, his body will start breaking down as everyone's does and his injury concerns will only become more prevalent. He's also only had 6 TDs the last two years.I'm not saying he's a bad pick. He's OK value at the end of the third. The receivers who didn't have question marks are already long gone.

Considering the context of being drafted along with Cam and Percy Harvin, I would say the pick makes a lot of sense. That is a very dangerous offense. Andre provides the vertical threat while Percy is dangerous horizontally. Both of those players along with Cam's ability to make any throw and run it himself make that offense very difficult to play against.

Only one I'm semi concerned with would be Ware. Brady isn't slowing down, and the two big guys can play for many years at their positions.

I overlooked the Laurinitis pick. That actually is my least favorite pick by a wide margin. I agree he's an above average to average MLB.
Favorite: Eric Weddle. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I believe Weddle should have been clear 1B at safety to Earl Thomas. Getting him at 3.32 is insane value IMO. Least favorite: Nick Fairly. I just don't believe that he will become an elite DT

You aren't in the minority on Weddle. He outplayed every safety in the league last season, by a large margin and he's only 28. I probably should have taken him over Crabtree, but thought he or Byrd would make it back around to me.

We have a tradition to uphold in Chicago, plus I knew I wanted to start my D with a pass rushing end and a captain in the middle. Bright future for this kid. Not often are inside backers taken in the top ten of the draft but he proved he was worth it.

So far two votes for favorite pick of the third round go to me.
I think Weddle, Earl Thomas, and Byrd, all are elite safeties and worthy of a 2nd-3rd round pick. They are clearly the 3 best safeties in the game I think but because of the relatively limited impact they have (compared to higher impact positions like QB and 3-4 OLB) I feel like they were drafted in about the right position. Having said that, because they are clearly at the top of their position, they are safe picks and provide little downside. That is exactly what I want with my 1.1 team.

Had Mayo queued up here, turned into a really tough pick for me. I think I'm going to preserve the flexibility to pick up some pass rushing OLBs or a DE later and build that defense however the value falls. Johnson is a pure run stopper who manages not to hurt you in coverage and provides a little rush if you need it. Thought about going a lot of directions with this pick, but here we go!
1.07 J.J. Watt - DE
2.26 Vince Wilfork - DT
3.26 Nick Fairley - DT/DE
Fairley write-up: In spit of the fact that he was the worst offender on penalties of every single DLineman, PFF's overall rating for Fairley still placed him as a top 5 DT (he was also top 5 individually as a pass rusher and a run stopper). He's young, he can dominate physically, and you can learn to curtail penalties. You can't learn to be one of the most athletically gifted guys at your position in the NFL.
