Burger King proposes truce with McDs for one day, McDs flubs response (1 Viewer)

Burger King's proposal:

Burger King has proposed to McDonald’s that the two fast-food chains come together to make “The McWhopper.”

In a full-page advertisement published Wednesday in the Chicago Tribuneand The New York Times, Miami-based Burger King says the two rivals should call a one-day ceasefire in the “burger wars” to make a sandwich that combines elements of the Big Mac and the Whopper, the two chains’ signature burgers.

Burger King says the McWhopper would be sold for one day at a pop-up store in Atlanta and sales would benefit Peace One Day, a non-profit organization campaigning to make Peace One Day Sept. 21.

“Let’s make history and generate a lot of noise around Peace Day. If they say no, we’ll hopefully have, at the very least, raised much-needed financial support and consciousness for the great cause that is Peace One Day,” Fernando Machado, senior vice president for global brand management at Burger King said in a statement.
McDonald's super douchey response:

Dear Burger King,

Inspiration for a good cause... great idea.

We love the intention but think our two brands could do something bigger to make a difference.

...We commit to raise awareness worldwide, perhaps you’ll join us in a meaningful global effort?

And every day, let's acknowledge that between us there is simply a friendly business competition and certainly not the unequaled circumstances of the real pain and suffering of war.

We’ll be in touch.

-Steve, McDonald’s CEO

P.S. A simple phone call will do next time.

Given BK coming up with this idea and putting it out there publicly without consulting McDonald's first, I don't see anything wrong with the response.

As far as the restaurants go, I prefer McD to BK. I like their food a lot more (granted it is just fast food), but I thought this was a great idea. Was explaining it to my son, and he thought it was a good idea too. We were actually disappointed that it wouldn't have been a nation-wide idea. I would have gone to one of the restaurants on that day. They would have raised a TON of $$$ and awareness.

Bad call McD.

Letting McD's know less than a month before doing it seems like BK had no intention of actually doing this.

Weak PR stunt by BK. They are so far from being relevant - they mentioned McD's just to pick up some press.

Let's have Kia call out Toyota for a joint promotion and see how that flies.

Raising awareness for ... ?** "Raising awareness" should not be an end unto itself.

BK put McDonalds on the spot with no back-channel outreach. No problem whatsoever with McDs response.

** yeah, I saw "Peace One Day". Don't know what that is. I want my awareness raised organically, by sweat equity and good works, not by gimmicks. Others' MMV.

Maybe. If they were just doing it in one place, it should't be that hard to do. Or McD could have said something about the timeframe; say they're interested, just need to do it next year. Nowadays things in advertising and promotion can be done quickly.

Logistically, perhaps, but not necessarily politically, as it were. An entity as big as McDonalds, WalMart, etc. can't just put their weight behind an private-non-profit without establishing some actual engagement, familiarity, working links between people on both sides, etc.

While McDonald's has fallen on hard times, the average store still makes twice as much as Burger King restaurants.
McD's also has roughly double the number of locations.

    • Subway, 24,722
    • McDonald’s, 14,098
    • Starbucks, 10,821
    • Pizza Hut, 7,600
    • Burger King, 7,231

I think McD's could have killed them with kindness to the next level but I don't see anything 'wrong' with the response. As long as they come up with something 'bigger' then the response is not ##### at all.

McDonald's response should have been that they thought Burger King had already combined the two when it stole the Big Mac configuration and recipe for its Big King, changing it only enough to hopefully avoid litigation. McDonald's should simply have countered that Burger King out to give out all of its nationwide proceeds from their sale of McDonald's signature burger so blatantly already ripped off, and should do so in perpetuity.

BK was in a lot of trouble back in 2010. They changed their business model to be almost entirely franchisee-owned. Think they only own a couple percent of stores at this point.

Looked like it was just one day at first, maybe with success it would have been made bigger.

No, I meant that McD's said this in their reply:

We commit to raise awareness worldwide, perhaps you’ll join us in a meaningful global effort?
I assumed they meant they could work together on a global scale to make a big difference.

Let's see. ..BK comes up with the idea, comes up with the recipe, comes up with the packaging and cones up with the date and McDonald's doesn't want to play along? Why would anyone be surprised by this?

I think that is more for the Peace Day organization.
I thought that's why they were doing it. No?

I'll admit, I haven't really read the story other than what was posted here, so I may be off on my thinking.

Sorry if I'm not understanding you, but I think it would have been a one site one, day event, but due to the nature of BK and McD it would have raised global awareness for the Peace Day organization.

That would have been badass.

McDonalds should challenge all burger chains to sell a peace burger on that day. The recipe and configuration to be unique to each joint, whether BK, Wendy's Smash Burger, Five Guys, In and Out, whatever, and to donate the proceeds. State that the entire Burger World stands for peace.

Based on the FFA Burger Thread, not sure if 'peace' is a good description of Burger World! ;)

yeah, "peace of crap" BWAHHH HAHAHAHAHAHA!

BK with a major **** move trying to put McDonald's on the spot.

With that said, whopper is way better than a big Mac

Dear McDonald's,

We understand why you don't want to participate. Training your people to make a new sandwich can be expensive and judging by your dwindling sales, it's probably not something you can afford. Don't worry, we'll go ahead and do this ourselves. You can sit this one out while you work on the McTaco.
