Chevron near LAX had a cheaper cash option today.

Is not that all gas stations? For my entire life and prior the advertised price on the sign is the cash price. If you pay with any card it’s higher.
Not tmk.

Well, whatdaya know. AI says:
All states in the U.S. allow gas stations to offer cash discounts, as these discounts are protected by U.S. law. However, some states have specific regulations regarding how these discounts must be advertised.
Maybe I’ve only lived in places that don’t advertise the discounts? To be fair, I don’t ever look at gas prices, as I always drive to E, and fill up regardless.

ETA Wife getting gas in a bit. I’ll look for those signs, and report back.

for years now i've heard that gas is not what keeps gas stations open. it's the snacks and drinks people buy when they stop to get gas.

thought i remember hearing profit margin per gallon is pennies so i'm wondering if that's true since it seems gas can be had for a cash discount. who the hell would advertise a cash discount if they're making a few cents profit per gallon sold?

The only time I use convenience stores is during vacation road trips. So maybe a few times a year, max.

I’m aware of the Buc-ee’s phenomenon (never been), but how often are most people straying from the gas pump?

not aware of any standalone gas stations here that aren't also convenience stores.

Rare for me to stop in except on road trips too. Most of the gas stations by me are like a Sunoco, where, if you go inside, it’s basically just the cashier and a shelf with some expired bubblegum or candy bars or something.

For me, it’s not for lack of convenience store options. I just don’t want what they’re selling.

United States vs The World In any kind of all star game or athletic event.

The egos we have here makes me puke.
Hard disagree. Ryder Cup, President's Cup...two amazing events. The Olympics?!?!?! Amazing.
I’m talking about the NBA doing this. Or something similar.

Not your obvious examples where it makes sense.
Sorry I thought of those as Athletic Events.

It is kinda trope-y at specifically All Star events, but it's less ego and more international marketing. It's a business decision for the NBA, for example.

I feel like they’re all being converted to “big box-esk” styled Royal Farms and WAWAs around here.

I don’t buy stuff at convenience stores unless I’m on a super long road trip. The prices are insane and it disheartens me to see young people buy so much crap.

honestly never really thought about it. my guess is purely off the cuff.

we have a little mom & pop owned gas station with small convenience store attached. drive past it every day. everyone knows the owner and workers. people stop in just to chat.

but there are also Kwik Trips nearby and those things are like a vortex sucking people in.

You're forced to go inside to pay with cash, so greater chance you buy some of that other stuff with the higher margins. Also, in many states, they can just put the cash price on the signs to draw people to their station in the first place. In effect then, they're not really advertising a cash discount, but advertising that as the price and then charging more for credit.

Here in NY, if a gas station has different cash/credit pricing, they can't just have the cheaper choice on the signs and then you see a higher price at the pump - they have to either show both prices or, if only one, then it has to be the higher price on the signs. That may be why I don't see separate cash/credit pricing very often at all around me.
(Still see "with car wash" pricing, though, which is annoying)

I still like the ramen noodles you get for 25 cents a pack
With just a little effort you can turn them very good anyway.

A little (dark) miso paste in the bottom of bowl, and a little gochujang. A few sliced onions, even better if you have scallions around. Poach a couple eggs and slice up some leftover chicken or pork...boom.
Do all of this, but at least start with Nongshim Shin Ramyun. They're only about $1 each.

Me neither.

Definitely can’t imagine stopping in a business, any business, to chat, unless it was with a close friend.

Otherwise, agree with @STEADYMOBBIN 22 regarding the prices and cr@p they sell. I feel the same way when I pass fast food places, though frequent lines of cars remind me they’re popular.

Dude, people love junk food. I'm usually shocked at how busy these places are the rare times I happen to go into one.
Yeah, I live in a health food bubble. I see the evidence of bad eating habits, of course, but none of the people I hang out with regularly indulge in that stuff, at least when I’m around.

My wife scrutinizes every label, and eats 6 or more servings of fruits and veggies daily, for example. No added salt, sugar, booze, etc. Definitely not the Big Gulp demographic.

Don’t get me wrong, I have a sweet tooth. Love candy and desserts. I eat junk food in the office, but almost never buy it. A big part of that is avoiding the places it’s sold; not just fast food, but the center aisles of grocery stores/Costco as well. Stopping in convenience stores isn’t even on my radar.

In order to get the ten cents a gallon cash discount I have to go into the place. Once in there I have to hope the person in front of me is just buying gas and not their week's groceries and assorted lottery tickets.

You need to go inside the store to receive the cash discount. What are many people likely to do when they go into the store to get the cash discount? That's right, buy some high profit margin garbage.

The gas is the loss leader.

Old people - I'm looking at you, father-in-law - who basically put on a beekeeper's suit to mow the lawn. Or get the mail.

Are people dying of mosquito bites, or what in god's name is going on????

Been covered ad naseum but I'm winding down my week at BWW, waiting for my train with some reading material at the far end of the bar - as far as one can get. Place is fairly empty.

Older guy comes in, sits a few stools over, orders wings and proceeds to suckle his fingers so loudly it is drowning out the crappy music they play overhead.

It is one of the worst noises a human can make. Every wing he eats is accompanied by several locks and sucks like he's trying to remove the skin from his bones. Awful.
How do people reach this age of life without anybody explaing the concept to "manners" to them? Gross. ****ing gross.

People............or more specific bad / irrepsonsible / people.

Son just called while I was being updated on this thread.

Wreck on the way home from work in a semi residential / wooded country area.

2 lane road and a young girl (late 20's in an old beat up ford taurus) was passing people coming around a corner at a high speed for the area (say 50mph). Son didn't see her until it was to late (curve and trees) and slammed on his breaks. She creams his drivers side front corner spinning him, and then of course he gets hit from behind, and that person gets hit from behind...................then the girl takes off on down the road at a very high speed.

LUCKILY 3 motorcyclists were at the back of the 7-8 train of cars she was passing, and 1 stopped, and the 2 other and a few cars chased her down and caught her in traffic / traffic light about a mile down the road. Son and 2 other people in wreck were ok (most important part of whole story) and cars were "drivable".

Motorcyle #1 guy got a call from his buddies that they had the bad driver in a target parking, and the whole crew (all 3 wrecked cars and the #1 guy) proceed down the road. Police are on the way, and the girls is claiming "I didn't hit anyone". Son got her license plate and a picture of her car boxed in in a the parking lot.

1 - Car just got out of the shop on Monday and had 3K worth of work on it (BMW taxes I call it) so that it would last for another year or so.

2 - Same exact car / son that was hit by a local "rapper" with a shady instagram 3 years ago, and they shared insurance information and addresses (was not exactly fond of a guy that poses in pictures w/ loads of $ and guns having my address). Told him the car is cursed.

3 - If this car is totaled, I guess I'll just be out the 3K. SMH.

4 - Again, all is this is minor to the fact that no one was hurt. Son said it could have been really bad if hit happened about 10 seconds earlier when she had no where to go back to her lane.

I'll update when I get more info.

Glad your son is OK.

To piggyback your story I took my daughter’s car to get gas for her. OTW home I got rear ended by a kid with no license driving a car with no insurance.

Tried to work with his dad but he wanted me to take it to his buddies shop because “most body shops overcharge”.

Needless to say I ended up just using my own insurance so I’m out $500 and have a damaged brand new car.

Bastards.

Next time, words you can say:

“You should get a room for you and your fingers”

People............or more specific bad / irrepsonsible / people.

Son just called while I was being updated on this thread.

That sucks. Sorry for what your son and you are going through, and happy that it wasn't worse.
Also, those motorcycle guys are awesome.

for years now i've heard that gas is not what keeps gas stations open. it's the snacks and drinks people buy when they stop to get gas.

thought i remember hearing profit margin per gallon is pennies so i'm wondering if that's true since it seems gas can be had for a cash discount. who the hell would advertise a cash discount if they're making a few cents profit per gallon sold?
You answered your own question, GB.

You need to go inside the store to receive the cash discount. What are many people likely to do when they go into the store to get the cash discount? That's right, buy some high profit margin garbage.

The gas is the loss leader.
Also the lottery draws in lots of people at convenience stores

Every convenience story sign should be replaced with a sign that just says
Junk Food
Lottery
Beer
Ice

Sports teams wearing alternate uniforms with a color scheme completely inconsistent with the team's actual colors past or present.

NBA is the worst. However, I'm watching Twins-Blue Jays highlights and inadvertently rooting for the Blue Jays because powdered blue jerseys at least has some historical basis for the Twins, unlike the Milwaukee Brewers / Seattle Mariners blue & yellow cosplay uniforms they were wearing last night.

I remember a Mad About You episode where Paul Reiser bought a bag of ice from the corner bodega and the owner said “Ice, my highest profit margin. All it takes is water, cold and time!”
