Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (3 Viewers)

Did anyone talk nice to the initial person and get a better deal?
Why would you ever not talk nicely? The service reps don't set the policy. Acting like a ##### to them seems counter productive to me.

This is not about that you often times you get more with honey than vinegar, it is just about common decency.

Got mine just now.

$43.00 off for a year

Free Sunday Ticket Max

3 months free HBO etc. etc.

They had been calling my wife's cell all day and I forgot to let her know the plan. Oops. All good now.

I called and just got pissed off. Told them I have been a loyal customer since 2001 and that I am pissed that my neighbors are getting "sweetheart deals" and that I have to call in to get any kind of discounts. The Directv rep said the FCC won't allow them to offer discounts without the customer calling in to receive them. I said that sounds like bull ####. Anyway told him to cancel me since the best #### deal they could give me was 40 dollars off a month for 1 year. I told the rep that you and I know both know that I will be getting an email later that is a lot better deal, and the more I have to wait the more pissed I will be. I told them I don't want to play games with cancelling service, getting an email, and all that crap. Just give me your best deal. Still 40 dollars was the best he could do (maybe it is?).
you're over reacting. it's impossibly easy to do this. easier than the chiseling calls i've made every yearhere's how mine went.

i want to cancel

why?

too expensive

you sure?

yes

ok.

less than 24 hours later they call me

hello

hi, i saw you want to cancel, i can give you w,x,y and z. would that make you want to stay

yes

cool, you're all set

:banned:
It went just like that for me as well. You have to play the game. It's a pain but it's a must do.
You're not listening to me!!!! :wall: :wall:
Well with that kind if attitude I wouldn't give you a deal either.
If you read what happened to me (understand if you didn't, just wanted to let you know its been covered here) I was a total mensch - always am with them. The guy was purposely trying to double talk, gloss over information - then rinse and repeat. He would talk over me and I would stop talking to let him talk while explaining to him that I just wasn't following the numbers he was giving me and I needed him to directly compare my bill by line item. We finally got there, but it took that long and I didn't get the same deal others were getting.

People were still getting the $200 Visa card (though it was winding down pretty quickly - this was last night). And didn't get the 3 month HBO etc. - which I really want. I will be calling back after the free HBO 3 month trial drops off my account June 4th. And I really don't want to have to upgrade to ultra choice/whatever to get the $40+ discount.

Oh wait, you have to get some higher up package to get these discounts? I'm only paying 74 (with some existing credits) now with HBO but my base package is an older, cheap one.

Willie - that is part of what I #####ing about. Most (I think almost all) everyone else did not have to upgrade the pkg they have. My DTV guy first told me that my Xtra Choice package would no longer be available (not true ...). And I had to go to the Ultra Choice ($7.50 more per month) - and then get $47 off per month for 12 months.

ETA: Net savings of $19.50 for 12 months. Not bad, just didn't like the mandated pkg I didn't want/need - AND no HBO and no VISA gift card.

Much later when I was pushing back on the upgrade and other parts of the offer, he said that I would only get $17 off per month if I stayed with the Xtra Choice pkg. This meant I would lose the combined $20 in discounts I currently have - resulting in paying $3 more per month.

Guy's name was Jose BTW.

I had an old package called Xtra Choice (or Choice Xtra)

To get the deal I had to change to a current package and the package they put me in was a couple of bucks cheaper per month than I was paying.

The package they moved me to is called Xtra.

Sounds like one of those fine print deals. My question is what channels am I missing only having the choice xtra classic package? I feel like i have everything? What extra channels does this new package get you?

I did not have to change packages. I'm on a lower older package Choice Extra.

Have you gave it a go yet Willie?

Double checked I'm on " Choice Extra Classic"

Has anyone's cancel date come and gone? Was the service interrupted even though you cancelled the cancellation?
Mine was disconnected last night at midnight. Called around 9:30am, and by 10am this morning it was back on with a brand new deal in place.
Was anything missing from your saved shows on the dvr?
Nothing is going to be missing from the DVR. That is all local storage on a hard drive with in your DVR. Just like your computer hard drive.

My service was out for whatever reason after I go the deal. Was out from midnight - 9:00 AM. I had to call them to get it corrected. Nothing was ever off my DVR. It's just like when a storm happens you may lose signal but your DVR is always going to be there.

Imagine your cell phone being suspended or disconnected. Your phone still has the phone numbers and pictures stored in the phone.

I didn't have to change packages, they offered the Tier 1 to me for no extra charge and I still got $40/ month deal on top of that. Bill is $84/month with Tier 1 same as it was with Ultimate. Don't think it has to do with TV packages to get the deal TBH.

Somewhat of a fail for me. I called to set disconnect date at around 7 PM tonight. Then called the 877 number at around 9:45 even though I hadn't received a phone call or e-mail offer. Said that I had received phone call while out mentioning the offer code and number to call back. No hassle from the agent I was speaking to but he could only cut my fee from the current $151 per month (premier plan already receiving about $25 in discounts that are set to expire in a couple of months) to $125 per month for the next 12 months. Not as big a reduction as other people have been getting but considering the fee would be going up to over $170 per month in a couple of months it will work out about the same. Agent told me it looked like I was already scheduled to receive Sunday Ticket for free this year, but I didn't believe it since I hadn't negotiated that discount yet, so he confirmed I will receive ST Max for free. Big disappointment was not getting $200 gift card. I pushed back on it and he supposedly checked and said that DirecTV sent them an e-mail today that they were no longer supposed to offer gift card. I told him it was listed in the phone message I received with the offer code and he said there was nothing he could do about it. Maybe I should go to their rebate web page and see if I can enter my info. there.
I would wait longer then a few hours.
Couldn't wait any longer since the deal was supposed to be expiring last night. My mistake (if it would have made any difference) was not calling earlier in the week to set up my disconnect date. I entered my info. into the rebate site this morning and it says I'm not eligible, so for some reason they weren't willing to offer the gift card to me.

I'm still not convinced I'll get ST Max for free. When I checked my account this morning the programming section shows ST for 2015 with no charge but shows that I would have to pay to upgrade to ST Max. May be making another call soon to check on that.
Well, this turned out to be a real cluster**** for me, probably shouldn't have tried beating the deadline and just waited for the next offer to turn up.

Found out that while my bill did receive significant reductions, part of it was due to changes made to my account that I did not authorize. I was switched to paperless billing (not a big deal), the HD Extra Pack was removed from my programming, and the Protection Plan was removed from the account. So the price I was quoted of $125 per month, which I assumed would cover everything before I called to set up disconnect, does not cover the cost of adding in the HD Extra Pack and the Protection Plan. I also confirmed that I won't receive ST Max for free as I was told a couple of days ago, but that I will receive ST for free. I was told today that I could not receive Max for free because I received ST for free last year. I guess I should consider myself lucky that I'm even getting any new discounts because the agent I talked to about the newdeal1 offer left no notes in my account about everything we discussed. So the agent I talked to today could only see the monthly discounts that were entered on my account and nothing else.

Next time I try something like this I think I'll ask them to send me an agreement by e-mail to make sure that everything is entered into my account before I sign off on anything.

that really sucks.

It sounds like some of you should have just kept the cancellation on till you got what you wanted.

Bending to the first retention person or the first offer that was ####ty from the call back was the main issue.

Gotta stick to the scripts and know what other people are getting and don't take any offer till you get it.

The thing with Direct TV is to keep at it until you get what you want (within reason of course). I'm going on 5 years for ST Max for free. One time they tried to tell me I couldn't get any version of the ST because of having gotten for free the year before so I said I had to talk with the wife about canceling and hung up on that agent. Called back the next day and spoke to a new agent and lo and behold they could give me ST Max. I think the key was to keep pushing the 'you're offering it to new customers and not loyal ones and that's not fair' angle.

One the phone with DTV now, they threw everything at me in one minute. Got it all HOMER RUN! Thanks everyone.

It's possible some of the packages you guys are on left you ineligible for the discount, but changing isn't really that big of a deal imo. You can clearly see which channels are offered on their website by package.
I had to switch packages too, I was on a defunct one. I lost 8 channels I never heard of with the new one, so its basically the same.

I just tried to figure out which channels I'd lose and which ones I'd gain and it was tough to figure out. Looks like I'd get something called Boom and then a baby channel. Can I just keep what i have and pay 43 less per month?

Including the $200 visa?
They told me I was getting it then manager nixed it.
Culdeus would have gotten a $400 visa card and phone sex from the customer service rep.
I bit the bullet and called back got 83.00 a month bill, movie channels and ST. Quite frankly I am sick of dealing with it.

I don't understand why it is tough to figure out what is different. They line up every channel in a column and it takes less than a minute to see what is different.

I don't understand why it is tough to figure out what is different. They line up every channel in a column and it takes less than a minute to see what is different.
It's easy enough to change your package via the website. I'm gonna wait til my movie channels are up and then downgrade my package and see if it works. FWIW, I'm currently on Extra with 3 boxes (2 DVR) and I'll be paying 76 per month.

I've been with DirecTV for 15 years. I was on a discontinued channel package for a long time, but switched a few years ago. Now I'm on XTRA, which I was paying $77.99/month for. They lowered that to $34.99/month for 12 months.

There's 6 different packages and hundreds of channels to scroll through. You have to remember which ones you're getting and which ones you're losing. Then you have to figure out what the channels even are. How about just a list saying you lose these but gain these and here's what the Boom channel is (is it porno?). Then I have to figure out how much I'm going to pay when the credits roll off. Oh right, then I have to call again and make some other kind of deal. Maybe then I'll lose the Boom channel.

OK, I'm calling now. Not a fan of playing chicken like this though. I just always seem to get screwed on these kind of things. Maybe there are educational programs on the Boom channel that will help me have a more positive outlook when trying to haggle for better prices.

dear god man, this is not rocket science. :)

You are being asked to do less than a minutes "work" to have a chance at $500-$700 off your bill in the next year.

The one's that are late to the party are generally the skeptical ones anyways.

$200.00 GC likely offered later this summer but feels good to get to this and jump on it asap. Thanks to FBG's and you guys.

I make the call every year just have never had to set up a cancellation date or change plans. I haven't paid for sunday ticket ever. Some years I get it, some years i only get the red zone channel. It's the game of chicken that gives me pause.

Didn't know they could break up Redzone channel. I had difficulty last year with it but ended up getting the Max, they almost didn't because I got it the year prior, but had to say previous reps promised me it and just called 4-5 times. This year way easier 10-15 minutes and done.

Offered me something called the "entertainment package" for $31 less than what I'm paying now, would have knocked my bill down to $45. I'd lose channels from the package I have now. Was offered the free Sunday ticket. Turned it all down. Cancellation set up for June 14th. Now waiting for the call.
