Capella's 24-hour, VERY bigly OH MY GOD HOW DID WE GET HERE thread (2 Viewers)

Can't believe how few women voted for the first woman nominee.

Goes to show just how un-likeable she is.

The message Clinton pitched in Florida were repeated attack ads about how awful Trump was. How could he say such nasty things and who will think of the children?
Not sure why they didn't use the Romney game plan on Trump.

He doesn't pay taxes and he wants to lower them for him and his buddies.

Forget crazy/racist.  Trump is a con man.

People are sick of the PC angle which made people tune out to her ads.

Yes, it's a complicated media landscape.  And I don't see how we get back to a place where people are consuming media that tells them the truth rather than just what they want to hear.
We don't.  The only way to do it is if we have another Andrew Carnegie type philanthropist who creates a news network (that needs a massive social media presence) that is not beholden to corporate donations or ratings from the polity.  And can deliver the news in a medium that the people will consume.

But having said that, I don't agree that the democratic systems didn't work.  It looks like they worked about as perfectly as you could want them to.  I'm no Trump supporter, I think that has been pretty clear, but you can certainly stand back and this election right now and say that the elites that tim loves, and the power brokers and leadership class (whoever they really are) were just smacked upside the head with a 2X4 by the electorate and told to go eff themselves.  That is pretty much the very definition of a democratic system.

I wouldn't go that far, the problem is people are unable to distinguish opinion from fact anymore.  Opinion based journalism sells and instead of being in the back of the newspaper before the classifieds it's front and center.
They also don't hold anyone accountable anymore.

In previous campaigns, getting caught in a lie was a gaffe that would hurt you. But Trump just lied till he was blue in the face and no one ever truly took him to task for it. It's just on to the next flashy headline, what's the crazy thing Donald said today.

In my view, a key component of a functioning democracy is an independent media that's able to give information to the electorate that they rely upon in voting.  I feel like that system has completely broken down.

ETA:  This was my response to @Andy Dufresne and @Yankee23Fan too.
One of the biggest take aways from this cycle - just how much influence the system has on the media - from both/all sides, rather than the media acting as the 4th estate.

How am I going to explain this to my daughters???
My two year old is too young to understand; my four year old also but my seven year old certainly does.   She doesn't understand the larger repercussions, she doesn't know the gravity but she will.   She will feel it, she will know that we haven't made the progress that my wife, my mom, my grandmother thought they made.  She will know, in her heart, that her country still thinks it's ok to denigrate her.

It's not that a woman didn't win, it is that a misogynists did.  I could have explained Jeb!, or W or even Ted Cruz but I cannot explain how we, as the most diverse country in the world, can be so accepting of something so rotten.  I don't know what I will tell her other than that I'm sorry that she will wake up tomorrow and know that this is the will of the people, that this is now OK.  That preying on women, that calling them pigs and dogs is apparently acceptable, that threatening to rape them is just locker room talk that can be laughed off.
How can I explain that any college educated woman voted for this man?  How can I explain that college educated men did?   I expected that the uneducated would, but how does somebody with an advanced degree, a supposed view of the world and of history, somebody with a sense of decency, stand in a booth a pull the tab down for a man like this?

What is wrong with our country that this is acceptable

People care more about our leaders not ####### us up the ### then who Donald has ####ed in the past.

That's one way to look at it.  Another way is that the electorate just got duped into electing a con man because they didn't believe the truth that was right in front of them.

Is Tim back yet?

Didn't he also get banned during another big political event?  Was it when Trump won the primary?

I'm smelling a conspiracy here.

Never mind.  Forget Tim.

We've got Righetti filling in!

Great work here.  :)

So, initial thoughts:

I give myself a solid B- in this thread.  I very clearly slowed down with the awesome and on point movie quotes once states started to report, but that was due to (1) alcohol, (2) wife wanting to do other things, (3) more alcohol, (4) and then a real desire to simply watch what was unfolding before me.

Still, I think B- is fair.  The movies quoted were a vast array of Hollywood goodness, and frankly, my list of quotes still is better than tim's list of top 100 movies.  So there is that.  But I shouldn't kick a horse while it's down
Having kicked a few horses in my day I can tell you this is the best, and really only time to do it, and then only if they are on their side and you approach from the direction opposite of their legs.

Hillary won the popular vote.  WI, Michigan and PA were razor thin margins.  Let's not act like this was a landslide.

Even with this wave of white voters Trump barely won.  He got lucky Comey took a #### on Clinton.

In the effort to keep reasonably sane after this #### show, I am trying to convince myself that what we have witnessed over the past 15 months is just a result of what politics and campaigning has become. I expect (hope) we will see a return to civility and respect.

What's funnier is that Michigan and Minnesota still aren't called yet. Thank god we weren't waiting for them.

That's one way to look at it.  Another way is that the electorate just got duped into electing a con man because they didn't believe the truth that was right in front of them.
The two main choices were both con-men.  That's one of the main problems with this election.  And its the main reason that I'm not convinced this is a watershed change in the electoral map just yet.

Yeah, Dems, keep calling the Trump voters racists and uneducated.  That seems to be working out well for you.

Listened to an African-American female author on the radio and she just doubled down with her head in the sand as to how this happened.

It's not that people are racist and it's not that they are stupid, they are pissed off that they are being painted to be the bad guy and the thing that's wrong in this country.  I live with these people and I'm telling you, they respect others and they care about people, especially their families, and they work DAMN HARD.  Like every day without fail, they get up and go to work and try to do their best.  To then go home sit in front of the TV and be told they are stupid and racist and not even worth a voice in the government was not resonating very well.  They have been motivated by the insults more than racism.  These people own guns and have a crap ton of pride in themselves and their lives.

I work with and around a lot of very successful people that fall into the "uneducated" white voters category.  They aren't stupid rednecks.  They are successful American citizens and they voted because, guess what, it is their right and they earned it.  We had all better listen to them or things will get worse.

Listen to them about what?

This. It's why we he have First Take and Undisputed. It's why instead of SportsCenter being highlights, it's mainly analysis and opinion of what happened. I don't know when/why it happened, but people couldn't care less about the facts any more, especially if they go against their opinion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated businessman Donald Trump on his victory in the U.S. presidential election in a telegram on Wednesday, the Kremlin said.

I didn't even know you could still send non-singing telegrams

Pretty sure telegram is just a cute euphemism for body of dead DNC hacker with a note pinned to its back, with a P.S. of "lesson one of despotism - leave no witnesses".

Really?  When people complain that the economic recovery has been terribly weak and not nearly created enough good paying jobs for the average person, you aren't hearing that?  The democrats do nothing to help them and just claim things are great.  Trump walks in and says he can fix the problem by reworking trade deals and the great lakes region votes him into office?

You STILL aren't hearing the message?

I think you do have to give Hillary some credit - she picked Trump to be the GOP front-runner long before anyone else saw it coming.  She must have seen something in the Donald ....
