Car Market going forward (4 Viewers)

First brand new car my wife and I ever bought was a Toyota Corolla. 15 yrs ago?

Warranty was 50,000 miles. We had the oil changed religiously at the dealer because it was free with our purchase.

At 52,000 the engine started with a hard knock. Took it to dealer, they contacted Toyota. Toyota told us “warranty expired at 50,000, sorry”

No more Toyotas for us
Well, that's unfortunate obviously. But given their track record of reliability, that seems like an unreasonable response.
Maybe. But they won’t get another nickel from me

We are possibly going to see more subscription based options as we move forward. You want your navigation to work, pay a monthly fee. You want your heated seats to work, pay a monthly fee. Tesla is already doing it with the autonomous driving and there is talk of GM doing it with their hands free steering. If the manufacturer has to lower its profit to sell vehicles, they will make it up somewhere.

Figured this might be a good place for this, but I’ve narrowed down my car search for my youngest to potentially a Mazda CX-5. It looks like Apple CarPlay was added in the 2019 model and honestly, that’s a big selling point. My middle son and wife have that and it’s great for navigating and hands free usage. I’m also leaning towards the safety features of the gran touring. With 4-5 years and say 50-60k miles, I’ve seen low $20k at dealers and haven’t seen private parties. Thinking he could drive it at least 8 years to get through HS, college and a couple working years. I was looking $15-20k but might be worth a few bucks to have nice and safer features.

I don’t know much about Mazdas so wondering if there’s anything to watch out for or if anyone has other recommendations for similar cars. For instance, if I look at RAV-4s, for $21k, it’s 3 years older with 30k more miles and no Apple Car Play and almost none of the safety or other features.
A system with Apple Car Play is simple to add. Bought a pioneer head unit from Best Buy for a 2010 Camry we bought last year...free installation. Wired car play is pretty cheap if you don't mind plugging in (which longer trips you probably would anyway to charge the phone).

Unless you wanted the whole integrated system that may show more diagnostic stuff for the car.
Some cars are easier to add. If the car, like many newer ones, has it really integrated you can’t. Our 2012 Highlander had a navigation system so when we went around to look there were no CarPlay heads we could install. I’m sure some custom shop could have done it but we were looking for a cheap swap not an expensive install. We got my son a reasonable unit that sits on the dash with wireless car play and he loves it, but my wife’s Wrangler (replaced the Highlander) has CarPlay integrated. It’s so much nicer and the sound quality is better.
Makes sense with a lot of the integrated stuff. Definitely was easy for an older car. I would have dine it but read how many problems some had getting the steering wheel controls to work so I opted for someone else to do it.
Yeah, no chance I’d do it myself unless it was a simple replacement. We took apart the dash a bit to hide wires for the standalone unit but I couldn’t even find anything real for the Highlander with Nav. Even BestBuy/Geek told me they couldn’t do it. At that point, it didn’t seem worth it and he likes the portable one.

Auto driving I could see, heated seats, no chance. Also, that’s the draw of CarPlay. I haven’t upgraded my Lexus’ navigation system because it costs so much for a download. Why would I pay a few hundred when Google Maps and Waze are more accurate and free. Sucks that it wasn’t an option.

Some of the new GM trucks have Google integrated into them. You have to sign into google with a data plan in order to use the Maps. As of right now they also have Android auto and Apple car play, but I could see that changing with those being eliminated to force your hand. I don't know about other manufacturers because I am a GM dealer, but it would surprise me if they see one manufacturer able to make money off of selling subscriptions they follow suit.

The Car Dealership Guy podcast had a guy on with a car buying app called CoPilot.

I took it for a spin, I recommend checking it out. No sponsored cars, no buying a higher ranking. Pretty cool

Yeah I tried it took, not bad. It's basically weaponizing autotempest in an app form.

As we try to figure out which automaker might break ranks with the others and attempt to sell affordable cars, it's apparently not going to be Kia

It was once a budget-minded brand, and you'd think they'd stick to that as their cars are being stolen in 20 seconds by kids that watch TikTok, but nah.

They've been in the American market long enough now. They know Americans will pay any amount as long as it comes with fancy headlights and we can finance it for 20 years.

Something very strange is happening.Used car supply is at historic lows, yet we *just* experienced the largest monthly decline in used car prices on record. But that doesn’t make sense — If supply is so low, prices should stay high… right?Wrong. It seems like between the Credit Crunch (aka lack of financing availability for consumers) and rapidly increasing new car incentives, used car prices are beginning to experience accelerated deflation.Weird times my friends.

Sweet. Hope it continues and I can find a deal. Thanks for the post.

I would guess most people taking care of their cars are keeping them and the used cars available are probably repos and/or poorly maintained. and salvage/rebuilt titles. Not a lot cars available and the ones that are have issues.

Yeah, with interest rates as high as they are and cars as reliable as they are, why would you trade-in your 2-5 old car for a new one?

Same thing with houses. Why would I trade my 2.75% mortgage for a 6%?

That seems a bit of a broad stroke. There’s been a lot of indications that people are pulling back on spending. I can see people holding onto cars longer but I don’t think that the bulk of used cars available are problem cars.

People are definitely repairing their vehicles as opposed to buying. My shop is currently booked out 2 weeks. I have been doing this for 30 years and my shop has never been booked out that far. A lot of large repairs. It is very frustrating because I am getting yelled at a lot because people want their vehicle fixed NOW! (They are also not used to having to wait that long to get their vehicle in). Part of it is because of lack of repair facilities because there are just not as many people working on vehicles as there were even 5 years ago. As mechanics are retiring, there are becoming leas and less replacements.

When I bought my first car from a mechanic's shop there was a sign hanging on the wall, something like.

You can get your car fixed fast.
You can get your car fixed right.
You can get your car fixed cheap.
You can get two of the three here.

When I go to the dealership I'm not expecting cheap.

Good luck Snellman, some people go crazy over their vehicles!

There have been times around here over the last couple of years that I've wondered if the state was going to eventually have to stop state inspections because shops don't have time to fool with it.

In normal times, I'm sure inspections are a good lead/revenue generater, but right now, it seems like no good mechanic* wants to take time away from real work for a stupid inspection.

*The Jiffy Lube's of the world are still happy to do state inspections. And I pity the fool that takes them up on it.

One benefit of this state is the state run inspection stations

I'm sure it is a bit of a broad stroke. Used car prices are already overinflated so of course they would have to come down.

Yeah, car prices in general are way too high. I’m finally going to have to get back in the market for my 16 year old as my wife is having to go back into the office (stupid as she was hired remote years before WFH push) and I don’t think I can do a no car situation. I’m driving my car for a few more years and then I promised it to my oldest to keep him car payment free (he owns his car given to him by late grandfather) for another 5+ years. He’s got some loans from college starting soon as he just graduated.

Looking around is pretty discouraging so we’ll see. I’m hoping to get CarPlay and safety features and that’s about it. Don’t want to go new as that’s well above what ai want to spend so maybe used car prices coming down will be good timing.

:sadbanana: i have been searching for a specific used car for a while. There were a few that i was tracking (I am willing to fly and drive a certain distance). One was pretty close to me and I see the price dropping for 1-2 months. I go out to test drive it just before the holiday weekend. I like it a lot and book an inspector to check it out on wednesday 7/5 (when the dealer reopens (the car is driving off of the lot as my inspector shows up.

i am search nation wide and there are only 7 available at the moment. fine shipping if the price is low enough.

I had 2 up in portland sniped from me very quickly, and one in Bellevue (one this past weekend). :wall:

what do you mean pollard?

they'll screw something up ...or hard sell you on stuff?
Haha.

Last year, my niece went to one.
I have done the best I can to make sure she's at least heard what little wisdom I've attained on this Earth. But I had not yet gotten around to explaining the evil's Jiffy Lube type places.

She texted me while I was at work that she was heading there because they see could her immediately. Had I received this text in time, I would have left work to throw myself in front of her moving car to stop this calamity.

This was a Friday afternoon. They lit her up for about $1000 worth of BS, including some light brake work. It was at about 5:30 that Friday that she noticed a bunch of fluid where they didn't re-attach the brake lines properly.

We had a local guy come fix it because it was unsafe to drive and the wrench in a box place was closed. Wrench in a box wouldn't do a refund even after they tried to kill her because they never had a chance to fix (which I do sort of understand).

It's like a rite of passage. That life lesson where a Jiffy Lube type place screws you so bad that you know to never go back.

They've always got a fresh crop of sheep to sheer, so I'm sure it's a great business model.

Ugh, such a pain trying to get a new car. I basically refuse to pay these used car prices so I'm left with hoping to find a new one in stock that someone else hasn't already bought. Some dealerships won't even send an offer. They say I need to come in. I just want to negotiate in email and then go in when it's time to buy. I don't want to spend tons of time going from dealership to dealership, but I may have to do that one day and buy the first thing I can get my hands on. I might put a deposit down on something in transit.

Two years ago, I got an Accord EX Hybrid for $29k out-the-door. Now I'm looking at a Civic LX for $27k. Oof.

I got a new 22 accord sport for 28 and it felt like a steal 😂

While I do care about the price, I think I actually care more about feeling like I got a good deal. I hate buying a car and immediately feeling crappy because I think I overpaid.

To make things interesting for GM. There are rumors we could see a strike coming up that could affect inventory and parts. Great, having a harder time getting parts already, let's magnify it more with a strike.

I think Ford and Stellantis should also be concerned. New head of the UAW has a lot of fiery rhetoric. I expect to see a prolonged strike for at least one of the Big 3.

I have ALWAYS been a Honda guy. Probably owned ten of them over the years. We still have the 03 Accord I brought my son home from the hospital in. We also have the 2015 Pilot we stole before the design change. We recently went in to buy a 23 Civic Hatch Touring in Black/Black. Dealers were totally back ordered on that and others we liked. They were talking around 40k for price when they could get them. I couldn't believe it. We also bought our other cars over email at big discounts in the past.

We decided to forget the Hondas, and I talked the wife into testing the Acura Integra ASpec, and we ended up buying one on the last day of the month. I think it was 37, and we also got the black/black tech package. Also has the Hatch! My advice is check out the 23 Integras. Highly recommend.

Well, I'm trying to keep things as cheap as possible while still getting something I like, so I think an Acura is out. I think I'm going to look at an HRV this weekend. Not really familiar with them. But, since this vehicle is primarily for two college kids to get to school and back, I like the idea of the extra storage room of the HRV.

Unfortunately, I got hit with the bad news today that the noise my 2012 Pilot has been making is from the steering column and one shop says total cost for repairs is over $4,000. I did take it to another mechanic who I trust more. He said he agrees that's what's causing the noise but he thinks it's ok to still drive and the repairs aren't immediately required. One Honda dealership today offered a whopping $2k for it. It looks horrible (interior stains and tearing, exterior scratches) and add in the possibility that they hear the knocking sound and I might just have to take what I can get. I was hoping that car would last another couple years until my Accord is paid off. A big reason for my current car search was to get us up to three cars and I may still be at two with the Pilot issues.

Exactly, and it was CHEAPER than the Civics. That was my point.

Exactly. And you can get some cheaper than the Honda which is not normal.

Two years ago, I got an Accord EX Hybrid for $29k out-the-door. Now I'm looking at a Civic LX for $27k. Oof.

Acura is Honda.
Exactly. And you can get some cheaper than the Honda which is not normal.
I have no idea why, but as of May Acura had above average levels of inventory (compared to other automakers), while Honda has the 2nd lowest inventory levels after Toyota.

Many brands are starting offer some incentives, but it's hard to imagine any Toyota or Honda incentives. I could see finding a Honda/Acura dealer with no incentive to cut price on Honda's, but maybe needs to clear out some Acura's.

I have driven a ton of American Muscle over the years. These Acuras are as fun as ANYTHING I have ever driven fwiw.

We bought ours on March 31st and just bit 10k miles, lmao. I did put 3k on going to Kansasz but the rest is all local driving.

Interesting reading. We’re still okay with the 11 odyssey but sorta window shopping. Medium sized SUV would be preferred but I get the feeling everyone wants those.

We’re in no rush, does anyone have a guess when we’ll see a better chance to buy? Probably highlander or maybe the Kia telluride. Would love a Rivian R1S but I’m not ready to drop close to 6 figures on a vehicle.

we had a 2021 palisade till someone totalled it. we got a 2020 telluride as a replacement. we like the telluride a bit more, but the cup console on the palisade was sweet (and the storage underneath it). for some reason it just seems to be more pleasant to drive on long trips.

we didn't get highlander as there wasn't as much interior room especially the 3rd row which we need with 3 kids.

good luck finding a telluride close to msrp. but palisades are available at often at msrp.

This is something I can get behind. The only autos we got on our van were windows and locks. Auto --> repair costs. And one of those things (lock on one of the sliding doors) we did get...broke. We installed our own remote car starter, which is huge in winter, but I have no need for anything else and would love to see that reflected in pricing as we begin to dip our toes back into the market.
