I saw this story yesterday and my immediate reaction was to place blame on the driver. It seemed like he was just being impatient and wanted to get going as soon as possible. Now seeing that the driver was deaf, had terrified deaf children in the back seat, feared for his life as idiots in costumes bounced on his hood and pounded on the windows, I have done a complete turnaround. When the flight or fight mechanism kicks in all bets are off. It's sad that someone was hurt and thankfully nobody was killed but I don't fault this driver one bit. If I thought my family's life was in danger I would have done whatever I could to get out of that situation as soon as possible.

My wife brought up a great point. What if the situation was reversed and the zombies were driving the car and the deaf people were pedestrians? If the car driven by zombies was following the deaf people looking like they could run them over or attack them at any time and the deaf pedestrians ran onto property marked no trespassing, should the pedestrians be charged with a crime? We both agree that they should not. If you feel your life is in danger there are certain times doing something illegal may be the right thing to do. Any reasonable judge would throw out the trespassing charges and we believe that the charges will be thrown out against the driver as well. If you want to dress up in a Halloween costume and scare the crap out of deaf children then don't be surprised if someone takes extreme measures to protect those children.
You saw the start of the video where he initiates contact with the crowd? The crowd is not threatening him or his family, there's nothing to be afraid of, if he can't properly convey that there's no danger, and to be patient, to his kids while behind the wheel he shouldn't be driving. You brought up the what if's so how about this. What if there were a family that was deaf in the crowd. He starts inching his way through the crowd, which initiates a confrontation he as not prepared for, and he plows over a couple of deaf kids.
They are just standing in the middle of the intersection laughing at the car. Some of them are not even crossing the street. It looks to me like the driver doesn't start pushing through until people are sitting on his hood and banging on his windows. All the driver did was honk the horn (if that was him) to alert these morons that they were standing in the middle of a real life intersection. Once someone opens the passenger side door and tries to do whatever it is they wanted to do to his family inside, all bets are off.Take a group of your friends and stand in the middle of a busy intersection. When a car starts honking it's horn go sit on the hood and pound on the windshield. Get some friends to bang on their windows and have another friend open the passenger side door and threaten the family inside. Honestly this situation could have turned out much worse.
Watch the video again genius. Crowd doesn't get rowdy until he starts pushing his way through it.
The crowd gets rowdy when he inches forward and honks his horn.
Exactly. The driver initiates the confrontation then plows people over when it doesn't go his way.

It's crazy the power and entitlement people feel because they're behind the wheel.

He's honking his horn and asking the pedestrians to stop blocking the road and let them through. The reaction of the crowd to that was to sit on his hood, pound the windows and windshield and then open the passenger side door and confront the terrified deaf family inside. What if the reason he needed to get through the intersection was he was having an emergency pertaining to one of his children? I don't believe asking pedestrians to move out of the intersection so you can pass through is an over the top request. I will agree with others in saying that this was poorly planned.

We're just gonna disagree on this. Also you keep bringing up what if's and that's not happened. I think the driver was in the wrong. You don't.

I am bringing up what if's precisely to illustrate that we don't know what happened. There could have been many reasons he wanted to pass through the intersection and frankly just wanting to get to his destination in a timely manner is as valid a reason as any. The real question is why were these people just standing there in the road and not crossing the street? Honking the horn and inching the car up to alert people he wants to pass does not warrant the reaction he got. He does not just slam the gas and mow people down. He lets them know he'd like to pass through and doesn't hit the gas until people are banging and sitting on the car and opening the door.

Why doesn't this clown roll his window down and ask if they would please let him go? That's better than what he thought was the best plan of action.

This is the eighth year they have done this walk. Probably by now there are thousands who line the route to watch this unofficial parade every year since there are tens of thousands of people in the area. Probably no secret that there might be traffic delays in the area.

I don't think the pedestrians or the driver are at fault here. But there are three groups I do fault.

First there is a group of people not moving, just blocking the road, ignoring the driver. They are directly in front of the car. They are not pedestrians. If they weren't just standing there then the driver would have been able to safely slowly inch through the moving pedestrians. Then you have the guy that sits on the hood. If you watch the video a couple times you will see that he pushes his way quickly through the crowd from the left sidewalk to insert himself into the situation in an aggressive manner that looks to be the trigger to the start of the acceleration of the car. Then as the car starts knocking through people, instead of backing away, some people move toward the car to strike it and pull at the doors.

These are all the people in the wrong but I'd put the blame for the injured women solely on the hood sitter.

Deaf Man's Guide To Navigating Difficult Situations Behind The Wheel

Problem: "We're filming a movie here, sir. These are actors, the street is closed off, and you can call this number if you want confirmation from the local authorities."

Solution: Can't hear what jerk is saying. Ignore and drive through crowd.

Problem: "We're doctors, and these are emotionally damaged children who aren't fully in control of their faculties! We're trying to shepherd them out of here without anyone getting hurt, and would appreciate just a few minutes of patience!"

Solution: Can't hear what jerk is saying. Ignore and drive through crowd.

Problem: "We're just ### holes. Get your own street. Occupy roolz!"

Solution: Can't hear what jerk is saying. Ignore and drive through crowd.

He doesn't push through until people have made contact with his car
Correct.

and the door opens
Incorrect.
You may be right. Our view of that door is blocked by the rickshaw. When the man for sure opens the door the car is moving but according to the video description his windshield has been smashed by this point. Why is the man opening the door? I don't know but that was not going to slow the car down.

The real question is why were these people just standing there in the road and not crossing the street?
Did you see the photo of the long crowd line? I'm guessing they weren't moving because the people in front of them had stopped.
It looks like people are moving around them. Why people would Q up in the middle of an active intersection is absurd to me. Again, this was mismanaged.

its confusing when you slip in and out of your shtick.

The driver of the car snapped this pic just before stepping on the gas.
If that was how the crowd looked and acted then they would be happy I only ran them over and be glad I didn't have a gun. My housemate in college once jump infront of the hallway with some scary mask on not on Halloween... I punched him in the face as hard as I could even though if I thought about it for a second I would have been able to make some sort of different decision. Fight or flight though and you. If this was a walk for diabetes or cancer or something this probably never happens.

Again though. my stance is not supporting the car. I wouldn't have got that close in the first place. Those saying he could have turned around though I don't see it.

I didn't realize they were in a line. I saw some people walking and some just standing with their back to the car. I think it's a fair question to ask why there would be a line forming in the middle of an intersection.

Probably because then they would be banging on his head instead of the window.
Nah.....simple communication between him and one or two of the people in the line and this would have turned out differently. They're comic nerds; not 1% outlawers, anarchists or street hooligans. Roll the window down, "can I please go" and be on his way. Problem solved.

you're seriously scared of girls dressed as zombies?

Well, at least this post answers the earlier question of why it matters that the driver was deaf.

Deaf doesn't equal mute....

First part was trying to put myself in the drivers POV relating it though to an experience I had that demonstrated fight or flight. It looked like thousands of people also so I doubt it was all hot girls and probably save to assume that some of them were even more "into" character. So no, three cute girls would not be scary, a thousand "zombies" trying to act in character would be something I'd avoid unless I was in the crowd having fun myself. But that's all moot because to me it just looked like normal people dressed normally. I didn't see that many zombies in the videos.

As I posted upthread, it looked like a combination of people walking, and spectators watching the people walking. You can see the "zombies" in makeup in the back--they are walking. The people closer, with their back to the car (including the person that was hit), are spectators watching the zombies walking. Why they thought the middle of the road was a good place to stand and watch, I don't know.

It seems as thought they may be in line to get into an event that is up the street. Why they would extend the line into the middle of an open intersection is perplexing. Why did they not bend the line to stay on the sidewalk and out of traffic? Someone is going to be sued here and my guess is it is going to be the organizers of the event. If they know they're going to have a huge turnout and there is going to be a line how could they not plan for this and insure that people attending would be safe? How did the attendees not realize that standing right in the middle of an intersection may not be safe? People were more afraid to lose their place in line than lose their lives.

They are not in a line going anywhere. They are lining the streets to watch the Zombie walk like they probably have for the past eight years. Should the city have blocked off the streets? Probably but then most people don't go plowing through a crowd of parade watchers to get to the other side of the street.

Googled zombie walks and came across this facebook page for the Charleston zombiewalk, which the city declined application for a 5th annual one recently.

CITY- "Cassandra-we received your application for this year’s Zombie Walk and I believe have reached the point where your successful event has outgrown what we can handle in the city anymore.
Obviously that’s a good news/bad news result.
You have grown from a small group to well over 200 and I anticipate that it will continue to grow. The sidewalks are just not doable anymore and we are not closing down Meeting St.

In addition the day that you chose 10/19 while not busy on King St that weekend is very busy in the life of the City and we will be unable to have the proper CPD support that was required in the past (which was not enough last year due to the growth).

I am willing to have you come to the committee and present your event but I wanted to give you ample time to look for another location... (snip)

This makes it all the more strange then. They're just standing in the middle of a live intersection to watch people in zombie costumes walk by? Unbelievable.

I voted Zombies fault...Basically, I'm against anything that blocks traffic. If you're going to block traffic, you need a police escort and/or those big saw horse things to close off the road. You can't just decide you don't have to obey crosswalk lights because there's a bunch of you.

Further, if someone thinks they can start banging on someone's car, and even worse try to gain entry to it and expect the occupants to remain calm and not gun it, they're nuts. Even if the car driver started it by honking. You don't try and open someone's car door. If someone tried to get into my car and my kid was in there, I'd do the exact same thing. I'm getting away from the danger, and worrying about who I ran over later.

I'll bet every intersection along the walk has people blocking them. There are close to 100 thousand people in the area walking but only one idiot in such a hurry to run people over to cross to the other side.

somebody had to say it. :moneybag:

Seriously, inching through very slowly (maybe without the honking) is a perfectly appropriate way to handle a situation like this and does not warrant people jumping on his hood and trying to get in his car. I do it all the time at the end of football games, mostly because Candlestick is a ####### terror with poor/no traffic control. Nobody has ever tried to get into my car or anything, and I'm NOT going to just sit there like an idiot waiting for 70,000 other people to cross, nor should I have to.

It's mob mentality at it's finest.

The people in the streets wouldn't think of punching throwing or jumping on a hood of a car if they were alone.

But once the mobs starts swarming it's easy to jump in and act like a fool.

It's all fun and games until a car runs over your zombie parade

How can anyone blame the undead here?
Honestly, the same way I would blame someone for setting up their lawn chairs in the middle of the highway to watch the fireworks. How these people can just stand there in the middle of an intersection with their backs to the traffic so they can watch people in costumes walk by is stranger than the actual event.

I wonder how the cars next to and behind the guy managed the situation without running anyone over?
If it was over 15 minutes cars proceed without any value of human life. Pretty sure that's a law.

this fishing attempt is weak.
"Drivers should generally refrain from mowing down pedestrians" is fishing now?
The entitlement of some people simply because they're behind the wheel. It's incredible.
Speaking of entitlement, how about the jackasses standing in the way openly mocking the family trying to get through and then sitting on the hood of his car as he tries to inch through.

No entitlement on display there.
