Cedric Benson (1 Viewer)

As a Bengals fan I suffered through the stink that was Benson last year. It seems his hype is out of control on this website. I'm not buying that he is somehow going to lose his happy feet in GB once the regular season starts.

So to those of you not buying it either who are you targeting? Green? Starks? Or are you passing altogether?

Got him in the 18th round on Aug 4th, i draft again on Sept 4th. Kinda curious to see where he goes. (FBG-FFPC)

I'm not buying him either. I like Green later/cheaper. I think he starts out as the 3rd down back and eats into Benson's carries as he gets closer to 100% and the season progresses. Green might end up being nothing, but I think we know what Benson is and I don't think he helps this year anymore than he did last year.

He's horrible, but he's the best RB in GB. Last year GB had about 320 non QB runs, and I think it's likely that increases. I could see like 250 attempts, a little over 4 ypc, 20ish Rec, and 7-9 TDs.

4 out of the last 5 years he hasn't broken 4 ypc. And his career average is under 4 ypc.Just seems like a strange, slow, plodding, old, happy footed choice for a quick hitting offense. I think he gets relegated to goal line work at best by the middle of the season.

Im not buying the hype. I hope people enjoy the 15/64/0 games that will be coming their way if they commit to him. Benson has show what kind of runner he is. At least at Cincy he was in a "run first" offense. At Green Bay...good luck. He's excellent value if you're looking for a RB4 for injury of maybe bye week coverage.

No offense but the Green Bay OL is a lot better on the interior than Cinci. What was the OL in Chicago like when Benson was there? Who was his QB in Cin and Chi? This is the most talent he has ever had around him since he was a Longhorn, lets be honest.

Benson had a ProBowl QB and WR on his team last year (edit: And TE). He wasn't exactly keyed on each game.

You really want to compare Dalton to Rodgers? AJ Green to the entire Green bay stable of WRs and TEs? Very safe to say that teams were piling 7-8 in the box during the 1st half of last season with a rookie under center and in the WR1 slot? We can pull up the game tapesI think it is foolish and I don't understand why folks want to tear Benson apart. The team named him the starter, he is all but running james Starks out of town, we've seen other Cinci RBs be the missing piece for playoff bound teams. Would you like to make a projection on what you think he will end up with?

I watched the games. Trust me --- teams were not stacking the box on Benson. His YPC actually went down through the year as the passing offense became more respected (or maybe he became tired). No, I am not comparing the Bengals offense to the Packers juggernaut. What I am saying is that I have seen what Benson brings to the offense and I think its just a poor fit.

He played in CincyPeople underestimate the difference between a poor offense and a great offense...it's like night and day for these backs. This is an example of where staring at stats gets you in trouble.

What's not to like about getting the starting rb for one of the most potent offenses in the NFL around the 15th rnd of the draft? His situation could make him the steal of the draft.

one of the steals of the draft. Green is coming off an ACL, has been ineffective in the preseason and all the camp buzz from the beat writers is about how great Benson looks and how he's the best back they have had in a while. his YPC should rise with 2 less people in the box as defenses will always defend the pass first in GB instead of the run first in Cincy. he might not reach Grant's 282 carries from 09 but I think he hits about 260-265 at 4.3 YPC so he will pile up 1130-1150 yards and 10-12 TDs.

I think hes a great value.

Packers like having a solid RB to run out the clock, the problem the past few years is they have had horrible guys running the football.

I don't see why it's unreasonable to think he could do what Ryan Grant was doing. There are going to be wide open holes for him to run through and even though Benson is a proven mid level talent, he will average over 4 YPC this year.

+1

People hyping up Benson have clearly never owned him before. He's more important to real football teams than fantasy football teams. He's in GB to move the chains on 3rd and 1, 3rd and 2, run out the clock late in games. A big play for him is 15 yards. Guys like Grant, Starks etc. have been horrible short yardage the past few years.

The only leagues he could be sneaky good in this year are no-PPR, TD only leagues. The only thing that would surprise me about him positively would be more TDs because Green Bay gets in the red zone more often than the teams he's been on the past few years. I think he's gonna be typical Benson if owners are lucky with 60-80 yards per game, 1 or 2 catches. He will be the guy almost good enough, but never quite good enough to start in the last flex spot on many teams. Worst case is he's on your bench, taunts you with a 2TD 110 yard game, then you put him in the following week and he puts up a 58 yarder with no catches or TDs and someone else blows up on your bench while you lose by 6-10 points and you hate your life. I wouldn't touch him with a 100 foot pole in PPR.

He has no ceiling, he has no floor. He's just what he is and nothing more.

Yeah don't worry about the other running backs on the team, just substitute in Grant's stats from 2009 when there was no one there to challenge him for carries.

I'm w/the op, I think this job is greens before too long.

Forget 8 in the box....he'll never see it. With that passing game he may not even have to deal with consistent 7 man fronts due to the threat of the pass.

He's older, he's not exciting...but he's durable and he's a decent runner between the tackles. I think he's a good value as a RB 3 and will produce RB2 numbers some weeks.

900-1100yds, 6-9 TD's.

As the poster above me said, RB3 with some RB2 weeks. A solid bye-week filler or a flex position starter.

I also will add that the Pack really like Kuhn around the goal line and Rodgers always runs in a few. I would guess Benson tds would be capped at 6. I see Ced & Green forming a commitee of sorts.

IMO hype is well deserved. Packers will undoubtedly use him to seal away games, and at the goal line IMO

1150/9. 4.2ypc very few catches. Nice RB2

I think hes a great value.

Packers like having a solid RB to run out the clock,
Never looked at him as getting points with running out clock. Given Greenbay's High Octane offense....he could be used in this capacity many times this year. Got him in the 11th round just a week after Greenbay signed him early in August. To me...this was a steal ...even in a PPR League.

P.S.

I have him as a POTENTIAL STARTER [iN A PPR LEAGUE] as my 2nd Flex position. I'm going to be rotating Benson, Beanie Wells, Kendall Wright and Lance Moore all year as my 2nd Flex.

Thoughts/Opinions?

Everyone is not convinced about Cedric Benson every year including me. But he has averaged 1267 total yards and 7 TDs the last 3 years. Last year they were saying Bernard Scott will take the job from him. I even drafted Scott and thought I was so smart. Benson held the job all year. Not to mention in 2010 the Bengals lost 10 games in a row he still hit 1289 total yards and 8 TDs. You think Benson doesn't hear the doubts? Especially from all the die hard Packers fans? A city that only lives and dies by the Packers? Despite knowing what he is, a less than 4 ypc, not a good catcher and now on a Super Bowl contending team if you drafted him as your RB3 flex like me slam the door shut and start him with confidence. Nuff said.

If you're getting him anytime in the 8th or later he is very good value. There aren't many better offenses out there that fit his skill-set better as a one-cut runner. Rodgers spreading the field + zone blocking = plenty of opportunities for any RB.

As a Packer fan I'm more concerned about his blitz-pickup than anything, but I think there's a pretty good chance that he will have more than 1,000 all-purpose yards. They'll definitely be sprinkling in Alex Green as much as his recovery allows, though. Green is a better fit for the offense than Benson but they're not going to rush his ACL recovery.

None of the backs will be workhorse-esque. McCarthy has stated numerous times that he doesn't like to wear down backs, because they generally will have much less left come playoff time.

If we're just talking about yards.... 300 X 3.0 = 900. 150 X 4.5 = 675And that is giving him a 1.5 ypc average, the max you could possibly imagine. Ultimately, putting up numbers has more to do with touches than it does anything else. His touches are going down, that much we know.

I'm fine with 900/7 from Benson in my Flex position. I'll be rotating him with Gonzo and Collie (if he stays healthy, he could lead the team in most WR stats). I also have Dwyer as an option if he dominates.

So even if Benson flops, I have some OK back-up plans.

whodey,

I understand the apprehension, but when you consider his (1) situation, (2) the fact he has little competition and (3) he is on arguably the best team in the league, you have to give him a look regardless. When you see where he is going (FBG has a compiled ADP of RB 34 as of Sept 2...mind you that is likely low, but lets say RB 28), you are comparing him to guys like Wells, Redman, Kev Smith and Ridley), I think he is a nice buy...sure the proverbial upside is lower than some of those guys, but none of those guys come close to the combo of good team and lack of competition that Benson has.

To answer your question about the other RBs, I don't think Starks is in a good place at all, so he is off my list. I do like Green and think he may be able to do something, but he is so low on the list of RBs you can get, I end up with guys like Bilal Powell to end the draft, and just feel he has more opportunity. I could see swapping those guys out, but unless you are in a league that drafts over 20 positions, it may be a tad bit of a reach, and you are arguably leaving a better player in the FA pool.

I'll be surprised if he gets 200 carries with the other mouths the Packers want to feed and a pass-first offense.
-Packers defense generates turnovers leads to more offensive sets-Quick scores via longball to WRs-Chewing out the clock-Protect RodgersWe all agree that Benson will not be a workhorse back in GB. So he will not approach 300 carries. However, due to the above factors if Benson averages 13 carries per game then that comes out to 208 carries for the year. Now if you were to envision a game where the factors I listed above will most likely come true then I can see Benson getting 200 carries easily. The Packers ran the ball 395 times in 2011. 421 times in 2010. 438 times in 2009. 437 times in 2008. Due to an ineffective James Starks and the injury to Alex Green GB had no choice but to rush an all time low in 2011. Based on Packers history they want to get back up to 430 rushing attemps per year. Even at 430 rushing attempts they will still be a pass first offense. More than anything it's to protect Rodgers. I think your opinion is way off in saying that Benson won't hit 200 carries this year. I think he will go over that.

i forget who made the point in another thread, but Benson faced the ravens and steelers twice each year in cincy. very good point, imo. while i agree, he's mostly a plodder, he can also take the punishment of being an every down back. if he gets a bit of room to run he's great value on a high powered offense, imo. could get a good chunk of GL carries. As a RB3/flex he's great value, cuz he could be a solid RB2 by season's end.

A stately Benson, indeed.

I think he's an easy buy where he's going in the 7-8th round. All the other RBs going at that point are backups or in complete timeshares. If Benson stays healthy it would be extremely hard to not get value from him at that point.

Do you have a link for this or is this just something you're throwing out as a conclusion based on those stats? I think I would expect the 2012 Packers to look more like the 2011 Packers than the 2010 Packers, but I'm open to changing that opinion if you have some reason to think otherwise. Also, are you including QB runs in that mix? Sorry to bring up the same tired discussions, but I think it's important to note what those numbers represent.

Just a note...but in the heralded RB class of 2005, did anyone think Cedric Benson would be #2 in total rushing...behind Frank Gore??? IIRC, that is the last class that that had multiple top 10 RBs selected...not a bad decision by GMs not follow that blue print.

Got him last night in a draft as my RB 4. With this being a start 2 with a flex, and one of the guys in front of him being Peterson (who I have to wait to get healthy), I think benson is a solid player for a flex spot. He may not win you games 11-16 this year, but he should be fine for weeks 1-6 or 7 and perhaps be a trade value.

No. In fact, I was the biggest hater on Benson at the time. There's something to be said for being a workhorse back and simply staying healthy. The biggest surprise from that class is that Gore never had a major injury - that continues to amaze me every year.

That was in the heyday of workhorse backs. Crazy how quickly the league changes. And I suspect the 2005 draft was one of the big reasons why it has.

That was just a horrible draft class. Smith at #1. Brown at #2. Braylon at #3. Kinda says it all.

Ronnie never had any business going that high. As a prospect he wasn't even as good as guys like Mendenhall, let alone worthy of a top 5 pick.

Cadillac had talent, but could never stay healthy.

Disagree on Brown. He was a very good player who suffered a series of injuries. If he'd stayed healthy I think he would have been very well thought of.

I never liked him. I remember being shocked when he went that high. Knew it was a huge reach.
