Chad Pennington out for the season (1 Viewer)

On a side note - I really can't believe this is happening. I remember thinking the JEts had the next Montana when he burst on the scene. Nothing, I repeat nothing is bigger than the Jet curse. I am 34 years old and no Super bowl appearance so far or in sight!

ESPN just hinted that the Jets may contact Volek from Tennessee or Ramsey from Redskins. And they tried out Jesse Palmer and 2 others... The hell with Palmer, LORENZEN!
He's the Giants 3rd string QB. Not going anywhere.
You think Lorenzen will ever see any work? I love that guy. :football:
I like him too. They kept him over Palmer because his salary is soo cheap.

Is Jeff George still out there? I just like to watch him get fired up...
There's a guy who should be considered - except, IIRC, he tried out for someone over the summer and, unlike Dilfer, clearly does NOT have the arm strength anymore to get it done in the NFL.The worst thing the Jets could do againstthe defenses they face this year is put another weak armed QB back there (Pennie's been a weak armed QB this year).

The real problem here from a fantasy standpoint is that you can kiss Coles, Mccareins, Chrbet, Baker, Jolley etc goodbye - they are all now Baltimore receivers - and I don't see CuMar having another good year without a QB whe also nursing an injury.

Baker might actually be helped. Bad QBs need to dump off to their TEs quite often.

Namath used up all your juice in S.B. III

Tim Couch? Rohan Davey? How about a trade with the Steelers for Maddox or Batch? Obviously, they have to get someone in there fast. Guess Bollinger gets the start this weekend.
I would sign Testaverde right now, and then I would try to trade for Ramsey or Batch, probably Batch as he would be cheaper. Testaverde or Batch could get the job done, I think.
I think the Steelers would be more than happy to get rid of Batch and his 7 figure salary. Get a 2nd or 3rd round pick and bring St. Pierre back to be 3rd string.

I wouldn't offer more than a 5th or 6th rounder if I was the Jets, but if I was the Steelers I might consider taking that as well.

Mort Report: Basically said the same thing the NFL Network said, that he "might" be done for the season. Mort said that the Jets Team doctor said its a torn rotator cuff, but that Chad said sometimes all the scar tissue can make it look like a tear when there actually isn't one (evidentally he not a doctor but he stayed at a holiday inn express last night) Anyway, he is heading to see the doctor that did the surgery for a 2nd opinion.

"Man, I'm really surprised at the pessimism in this thread, even for Jets fans. "- Chase :lmao:

Come on - No need to go peeismistic now - Even if Chad somehow wasn't done for the year, it's not like he was throwing well and the offense looked lik eit was going to take off.....

Chad being definitely OUT is probably for the best - Now they can SERIOSULY persue a replacement and I have confidence in Heimerdinger working with a new QB - IF Hackett were still here It wouldn't be worht watching another game.

You must not know enough about Herm and the Jets. Chad is their franchise QB and will be under contract for his entire deal.

Couldn't remember who else the Lions brought in so I had to look it up. Shaun King. Could be a decent option.

Titans are terrible and are rebuilding. They would trade Volek for a #1. Heck, Jets traded #1 for Jolley and he does not even play!Titans could use picks to trade up [or actually they may end up with high pick anyway] and target Matt Leinart to come in and run Norm Chow's offense.Win-Win deal.

I believe the Titans had the opportunity to trade Volek for a 1st rounder in the offseason and refused. In-season the price would only be higher. I really can't see that happening, especially considering both are in the same conference.

Titans are better than the Jets right now...this would make no sense for either team. If the Titans want a #1 for Volek, they can get it in the offseason.

Not just you, but a lot of people have the facts a bit off. The Jets did not trade a #1 pick for Jolley, but rather moved down approximately 20 spots to get him. Big difference. But I digress...

Thanks Chase, I was about to do the same!

What am I missing here...what's wrong with Bollinger? It seems to me more like the Jets are looking for a veteran back-up.

I'm going to stop posting after this...but here are my thoughts on what I expect the Jets to do.

Rivers and Volek likely cost too much at this point to acquire, and I'm not sure Patrick Ramsey really fits the bill. I think the Skins are looking to trade him, but I don't think he would be able to start right away. Fiedler returns in 6-8 weeks. The Jets have a bye, so an optimistic view shows that they'll have to use Bollinger for maybe only 4-5 games.

In those games they play J.P. Losman and Anthony Wright, and I'm not sure those guys are any step above Bollinger. If the Jets can tread water and go 2-3 the next five games, they'll be 3-5 at the halfway mark with Fiedler back.

While that's an ugly situation, it's not terrible. Perhaps Bollinger surprises, and the Jets are able to be 4-4 through eight; either way, I think Fiedler will be able to play some meaningful games.

The Jets will play not to lose on offense, and hope the defense can win the games. Then they'll wait for Fiedler to come back for the second half. They'll keep both Pennington and Fiedler (assuming he plays well) for next season.

They'll probably sign Quincy Carter or Vinny Testaverde, although neither are familiar with the offense. Neither will do more than backup Bollinger (who didn't play poorly against the Cards last year, in limited duty).

This is a terrible day for Jets fans, unless Brooks Bollinger turns out to be r0x0r. Many are now speculating Pennington's career may be over (which I thought to be extremely premature just 24 hours ago).

Ugh.

Haven't read this whole thing (or any of it), but did anybody mention you just can't trade for a QB and have him come in and play. It's not like a baseball trade where the guy goes to another team and grabs his bat. Whole new playbook to learn, reads, receivers to play with, etc.

huge jet fan. obviously devestated about how our season has started(and probably ended) What is the cap situation if chad is forced to retire? How much of his contract would we be on the hook for?

On the + side, those of us that own C Mart may be getting some points from him finally as I think they'll rely on him a lot more if Penny is out.

Please. Teams may employ the very first-ever "11 in the box" defensive formation against these guys.

Then Coles will have a nice year :hey:

Very, very sad day in New York.I really don't want to get ahead of myself here, but this news is terrible.Question - do football teams take out insurance policies on players like baseball teams do? If so, it wouldn't necessarily hurt the Jets financially, but they would still certainly be on the hook for the cap hit (worst case scenario of course).Ugh. Terrible, terrible news.

Per Associated Press - Tore rotator cuff per MRI / Done for season

Will see Doc Andrews but if its torn he's done for the year.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-j...ov=ap&type=lgns
If it is torn again, you have to question whether he can ever play again. His arm strength was very poor already, imagine another surgery on top of that.
As a J-E-T-S fan, I hate to say this...Stick a fork in Pennington. He's done. Kaput. Time to tank the season so we can get Leinart:)

I sort of agree. But if that's the case Martin probably leaves and they won't have the space to keep Abraham.

Agreed. I have a bad feeling that this is the end of an era for the Jets. They're probably going to have to start rebuilding on offense, at least, at this point...

End of an era? Geesh, they have some awesome talent on D, a great line, an accurate QB, a TE(Baker)which has been showing flashes, and underrated Coles. Why end of an era, Martin?Blaylock was ahead of LJ on all the depth charts and he did darn well when Priest was hurt. Product of system or good RB? Who knows, definitely not the end of an era. Boy that's extreme

I wouldn't expect the Jets sign any of the young guys mentioned. if they want a young QB they have him in Bollinger and at least he knows the system.Vinny T lives in Long Island so he'll be a strong possibility but he'd need some time to work off the rust. He also knows the staff and many of the players. He's the pbvious choice IMO.O'Donnell...I doubt it. Been a long time since he was a Jet.The Titans don't seem to want to part with Volek and with how often McNair gets banged up I don't blame them.Mike McMahon and Koy Detmer are pretty much even, even though they're 2-3 on the depth chart. Philly loves picks for players. Still neither is a viable option IMO.Best out there, that has been shopped, is Kitna IMO. Easiest move, most obvious, testaverde.FWIW Testaverde only wanted to sign with a team that would allow him to play and then coach. He backed down on his demand eventually but....the guy really wants to coach. I wouldn't be surprised if he does sign with them that it's a long term deal involving coaching after he plays

Pennington is done at this point. As somebody pointed out above Pennington had a weak arm to begin with. No way he even comes close to what he was. For all intents and purposes, the Jets are going to have to start looking for a new QB.No Penny means no Martin most likely. Maybe no Coles for all we know. So, as I said before...ON OFFENSE we're going to have to start rebuilding. The line isn't getting any younger either....

Some quotes from the press conference today...remember, this is before the news that Pennington's season appears to be over.Q. Obviously hindsight is 20/20. Is there a part of you that thinks you may have brought Chad back a little too soon?COACH EDWARDS: This season? Q. Yes. COACH EDWARDS: No. I think what we thought, we knew going in he's almost seven, eight months in, and the only way he was going to get ready to play was he had to play. I just think when you're dealing with something like that, did we think he was going to be a hundred percent? No, it was seven or eight months into the surgery. But he had to throw the ball. He wanted to do it. We knew that we were going to bring him along the way we did. We thought we brought him along right. So happens to be all of a sudden now, something is happening, and we'll find out the severity of it. I just think that's what we all understood, so that's what we did. That was the plan. We didn't jump to a conclusion. We had a plan, and that was the plan. Q. How do you expect the situation to affect the psyche of the team? COACH EDWARDS: Our guys are very resilient, and they have to be, because that's a part of being a professional. I think these guys, whatever happens, they're going to play, they're going to play like they did last week. I believe that. I just believe the character of your team comes out now. We have a bunch of guys on this team with great character. We'll play that way. That's what I told them when I talked to them today. I said, "Hey, you got to play the same way every week. Keep playing, good things happen to you. We'll win some games like this, but you got to play hard, you got to play four quarters, keep competing." That's what they'll do. One thing about this team, since I've been here, the players I've dealt with always understood that's part of the deal, that we're going to play and we're going to play till we have nothing left in our gas tank. That's how we're going to play, that's how we're going to approach every game. Q. Any silver lining at all in the fact you're playing low scoring games? Defenses will be deciding these things. COACH EDWARDS: Hey, that's what you're doing. You're playing special teams and you're playing defensive football. You're playing keep the score low, you got a shot. That's how you got to do it. Don't turn the ball over on offense. After a while you figure out the cards you're dealt, you got to play the cards. You play 'em. That's okay. Just got to play 'em. You just keep playing. You can win that way. There's a lot of ways you can win in this league. There's not just one way. You got to know what you have. We know what we have at this point. We're going to play that way. We're not going to make any excuses for it. One thing, you folks see me stand up here, I never make an excuse. I don't do that. We're going to be play and we're going to be fine. Additional Notes...Q. In terms of the running game, do you think Curtis left some yards out there, or the offensive line wasn't getting it done? COACH EDWARDS: I think when you stack the box, you're playing in a game like that, you always can leave some yards, you can say that. It's easy for a coach to say because he's not running the ball. He doesn't have Curtis Martin's eyes. Who is to say whether Curtis left yards or not. He's a Hall of Fame running back. I think obviously we didn't get enough possessions. We had 51 possessions, I think they had 73. It was tough. It was tough sledding for us. We didn't make a lot of runs. Ran the ball for (89 yards) I don't know how many yards we ran the ball for, but we didn't run it much. With that in mind, it's tough because you become onehanded. Even when you're playing good defense, you never want to become onehanded. They were the exact opposite how they played. They ran the ball 47 times. They were in a game where they felt they couldn't protect the quarterback very well. They played it close. Both teams played the same way. Their punter did a great job of punting. I thought our punter did a pretty good job of punting. First couple possessions, we were in the minus territory. We were in the minus three, minus four. That's how they played the game. We were playing the game the same way. Both teams knew that it was going to be a defensive game. I think a lot of the scores were really dictated by how your defense played and the field position you had offensively. They did the same thing. I think the one time they went spread, tried to get fancy, that's when John sacked him, ball comes out, we score the touchdown, take the lead. I think when you get into those games, you know what you're fighting against and you don't want to beat yourself by turning the ball over. We turned it over three times, they turned it over three times. Even in turnovers, we had some chances to make some more plays, but we didn't do it. They made the plays that were necessary to win the game. It boiled down to that at the end. Q. Can you think back to another moment in your coaching career where you were in a situation, preparing a quarterback with limited experience? COACH EDWARDS: No. Basically, I'm trying to think, Shaun King was a second guy, not the third. Never a third. The second, I can remember Shaun King having to go in late into our season in Tampa. We made a run and got to the NFC championship game when he was a rookie with that. We played pretty good defense that year, were able to do some things. Q. What do you like about Brooks? COACH EDWARDS: Obviously, he's a heady player, he's a gamer. He can move around, make some plays with his legs. That's what he does well. When he's gone into games, he always seems to move the team. Obviously, if he can do that for us this week, put some points on the board, that would be great to see. He's been a guy that's been here, he's been looking for a chance, he's going to get a chance obviously this weekend to play. Q. What about last year? COACH EDWARDS: Arizona. He did a good job. He came in, really got a little drive going in Arizona when Quincy got hurt. Came in the football game, did a good job of moving the team. In the pre-season I thought when he played with the varsity guys, he did a pretty good job of moving the ball with the team. He's always been that way. He's a tough guy. He's looking for a chance, he's going to get his chance.

I would love it if they traded a first for Volek.Titans are carrying 30 mil in dead money this year, so we will be well under the salary cap next year, and would easily be able to sign two first rounders, even high first rounders. However, I am optimistic and think the Titans are a better team this year than a lot of people are giving us credit for. We may start 1-4, but have a pretty easy schedule after that, and could end up as a wild card. Chows offense is keeping Mcnair off his back first and foremost, so trading Volek could be a calculated risk. The Jets have to take in consideration that Chad may be done for, and if he is not, Volek can come in, light it up this year, and they could probably recoup their pick to another team. For example, Baltimore or Miami when they realise they don't have franchise qb's on their rosters.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, The Bachelor

ESPN reports that Jesse Palmer visited with the Jets on Monday. If you can throw a decent forward pass, you may as well show up to Jets tryouts Tuesday. Just watch out for the falling sky. Sep. 26 - 10:41 pm et
