Chargers Cut Rashaun Woods (1 Viewer)

Yeah, but it's always been the same crap with Woods. Hammy, hammy, hammy. As a Woods owner the last 2 years, I'm seriously questioning his desire at this point. At some point, you have to lay it on the line and play hurt. That's the reason the 49ers traded him, and I'm assuming a large part of why the Chargers followed suit. Absolutely pathetic that a guy with this kind of talent wants to F#&*ing fish!!
So what if the guy wants to fish. I don't get all the hate. He cashed in, doesn't really have his heart in the game, it's time to move on if that's what he chooses. Should we all stay at jobs we hate because the money is better?
That's my take on it. I do know Woods loves to fish. I worked a boat show with him 2 years ago in Tulsa where the boat dealer that carried Bryant Boats also sponsored Woods. He's a very regular guy. Actually more shy than regular. Seemed like a nice guy. Doesnt' surprise me at all that he might want to do something different. He made a lot of money and he's still very young. Whole life is in front of him.Heath Shuler here in Knoxville did something similar. Made a ton of money, had zero success at the NFL level and parlayed that money into a very successful real estate business. It happens. :shrug:J

It was apparent almost from the start that there was no room for Rashaun Woods in the Chargers' crowded receivers mix.

“We all came to a very early decision on his ability to help us,” Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said yesterday, shortly after the team announced it had waived Woods. “We're really comfortable – and I mean really comfortable – with the six guys we have on this football team that have been in the Chargers system.”

The early release of Woods also allows the former first-round draft pick to seek work elsewhere. Woods, the 30th overall selection in 2004 by the San Francisco 49ers, was acquired in a trade for Sammy Davis in April. Davis was the Chargers' first-round selection in 2003, so this move slams the door on what is so far Smith's only major draft blemish.

To replace Woods, the Chargers acquired Gerran Walker off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts. Walker, an undrafted free agent out of Lehigh, is likely camp filler.

The Chargers have Keenan McCardell, Eric Parker, Vincent Jackson, Kassim Osgood, Malcom Floyd and Greg Camarillo on their roster. The fifth (and likely final) receiver spot will likely come down to Floyd and Camarillo. Camarillo can remain on the practice squad another year. Floyd cannot be placed on the practice squad.

Extra points

Much more exciting than the overhyped Oklahoma drill is when the offensive linemen go one-on-one with the defensive ends and outside linebackers. The Chargers ran that drill yesterday for the first time in camp. Best moment: Rookie left tackle Marcus McNeill stopping linebacker Steve Foley – on both turns, including when Foley tried spinning away. McNeill has repeatedly shown he is quick on his feet and knows how to use his very large body.

From a Charger fan's perspective, that right there is some of the best news we could get.

The 49ers should have known the guy wasn't talented enough to be a #1 pick. Injuries pretty much killed any chance of him becoming a contributor. Nevertheless, he still has 3 million or so that the 49ers shouldn't have given him. Too bad.

Broncos claim WR Woods

8/2/2006

ENGLEWOOD — The Broncos today claimed former first-round pick Rashaun Woods after he had been waived by San Diego, another move designed to shore up a wide receiver position weakened by Ashley Lelie's holdout.

Woods was taken 31st overall by San Francisco in the 2004 draft out of Oklahoma State. In his rookie season, Woods played in 14 games, catching seven passes for 160 yards (22.9-yard average) and one touchdown. Woods did not play last season and spent 13 games on injured reserve. The 49ers traded him to the Chargers earlier this off-season for cornerback Sammy Davis.

To make room on their roster for Woods, the Broncos waived Marty Johnson, a running back from Utah.

Lelie is refusing to report to training camp because he wants to be traded to a team that will give him an opportunity to be a No. 1 receiver.

Nice, what kind of contract?

I check the Chargers website quite frequently and watch the videos of press conferences. When asked why they cut Woods, Marty said, (I am paraphrasing here) "When you have a guy you know is not going to make your rosterit is better to cut him early rather than hang on to him and cut him later. This way he has a chance to catch on wiht another team early enough in training camp that he could make their squad."

Naturally that is not word for word but you get the gist. Also, Marty mentioned something about the contract as well. Seeing how they traded for the guy I am sure his contract still had the first rond draft pick numbers from his original deal he signed in 2004. The amount of money he would draw and count vs. the salaray cap was probably too much for what he could bring to the field.

Part of me thinks it sucks to have essentially given up Sammy Davis for nothing but then again, having Sammy back there was such a liability I would be happy he is not there too.
