If you choose not to acknowledge that, it's your business, but there are serious problems within the Bears organization. Anyone halfway paying attention can see that. They want someone who follows the status quo and be Ted Phillips assistant GM. Pretty obvious.

I have to disagree with you. Taking things slow means that everyone else gets to sign their guy and you are left choosing one of the leftovers. And if the guys you are interested in are not on the lists of other teams, then maybe you have overestimated the guys you are interested in. This is particularly true of the Bears. If the Patriots, or the Steelers, or even the Packers have a guy on their list that no one else is considering, you give them the benefit of the doubt, because of their record of success. The Bears don't have that record, so I would question their choices. I'm glad to see the Bears interested in candidates other than Ruskell. I think that Ruskell would be a huge mistake. But I think this reminds me of what happened when they ended up with Martz. All the better options either turned them down, or were signed by other teams. The Bears had to settle for Martz. I don't want them taking a GM that they have to settle for.

Though, you arent competing with "good" franchises for gms, the good ones already have their gm (the exception of losing the guy from baltimore, since they locked him up to be the heir). I just prefer to see them be aggressive. Identify what you want and go after it. Select two or three candidates, and aggressively pursue them. Don't sit on your hands and wait to see what other teams do. If you weren't interested in McKenzie, or Grigson, then their signings are not a big deal. I think what could look deliberate, can also look indecisive. That coupled with the fact that I believe the Bears front office is fairly incompetent. I don't feel very confident in Ted Phillips making any football related decision. This is a very big decision. I don't want them to back themselves in to a corner because all their top candidates are either not interested, or off the market. Then they would be forced to promote Ruskell. That would set the franchise back at least five years. I'm glad they are interviewing, and I hope it isn't just window dressing to make it look like they searched before they promote Ruskell.

I may be wrong but aren't the other teams who are looking for GMs looking at candidates that are more experienced on the pro side vs. college talent evaluation? I think the Bears need someone who can draft well so that's not a bad way to go IMHO.

I don't know why Snead isn't at the top of the list or close to it. From what I'm reading, there could still be some other candidates out there that they are looking at. If Snead was one of them, I see no reason why his name hasn't at least been mentioned, though. Odd. I'm not a big fan of the Julio Jones trade they made in Atlanta. Not saying he would do that with the Bears, but the last thing we need is to start trading off multiple picks, although I wouldn't mind getting Floyd. Big receiver with a lot of talent, who I think will be better than Julio. Jeffrey would probably be the best pick if he's still there at 19, maybe even trade up a couple of spots to make sure we get him. It's a great year to get a wide receiver in the first round. Time to act on it.

Right after angelo was fired, snead seemed to be on the top of their list with the reports about him being closely "vetted" and then nothing. They must have found something they didnt like (or he didnt like them and told them not to bother). Or, maybe they are still pursuing him quietly. I think you are right on about this being the year to grab a wr in the 1st. It would almost be a waste to trade up for one, unless you love floyd ofr wright and think he will go a few picks before 19. It sounds like there are 4 or 5 wr that have 1st round talent this year (3 more than last year). Blackmon will go long before the bears pick, it is starting to sound like wright may go early as well, that still leaves jeffery, floyd, and randle to a lesser degree as good options for the bears. Lets just hope they are smart enough to grab one

True or not, its pretty annoying. the bears are interviewing viable candidates for the gm job and they just extended toub, things are looking up. Its likely that they will hire a gm by the end of the week or next week. Hardly the time to be ragging on them (save that for all the bad things you will think about their gm candidate). And, while I doubt haley will join the bears, I dont think it is an "unwanted" job. Lovie is known as a coach that is good to work/play for. If you buy into what hes doing (he has done a lot with the amount of talent the bears have) then it could be considered an ideal job. Lovie has been there a long time, tice is a respected coach, chicago is a great city. I imagine a large number of coaches would prefer to coach in chicago and work with cutler then with go to tampa bay or oakland, for example.

I personally wouldn't mind that much if Tice left. Then they could hire a coordinator to do both jobs instead of finding a passing game coordinator.

How I feel about it, as well. Heck, as silly as it sounds, maybe we could let the new GM actually make that decision this time.

Tice's exit would just add to the Bears' sitcom

If Mike Tice leaves to coach the Oakland Raiders,the Bears would have all kinds of bad news.

Or, looking at it another way, the Bears would have all kinds of typical Bears news.

The Bears thought they were looking for just a passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach to fill out the group that Tice would head as offensive coordinator. It was --- is for now --- Tice’s group because the Bears were trying to minimize the post-Mike Martz mess.

By promoting Tice, the Bears had eliminated a loon as offensive coordinator. They had cut down the size of the playbook so it could be carried through the front door of Halas Hall instead of the annual airdrop. They retained a play-caller who was familiar with the language of the scheme and at the same time retained a play-caller unlikely to evoke familiar potty-mouth language from Jay Cutler.

Maybe most critical to the process, Tice’s promotion meant Cutler would work with an offensive coordinator who knew what the quarterback did best and what he wanted to do, as well as what the rest of the offensive personnel couldn’t not execute.

But if former Packer Reggie McKenzie, the new general manager in Oakland, makes Tice a former Bear, this becomes messy, even for a Bears franchise familiar with stupid and laughable situations.

For starters, you’d have Lovie Smith picking out a new offensive coordinator. How has that worked out for everyone? From Terry Shea to Martz, that’s some legacy.

Smith has gone through assistant coaches as if he was on commission. You’d think he would’ve gotten it right by now. Maybe he has with Tice, which might explain some of why Oakland wants to talk to him, which explains why anyone with a brain would be afraid of Smith pressing his luck.

I mean, he has enough trouble getting the OC position right once every couple years, and now you think he could go 2-for-2 in the same month?

Yes. Right. Seek professional help.

Tice’s exit also would require the Bears to hire a new offensive line coach. Actually, they need a new offensive line, and so, if there was anybody critical to Cutler’s not dying, it would be the guy calling protections based on two years of knowing what the linemen could not do, which includes but is not limited to almost everything Martz called.

All of which makes the search for a passing game coordinator worth a smirk, huh?

Not that there aren’t good candidates out there, but who would come to this screwed-up situation where Smith’s contract is as short on years as Bears management is short on smarts?

The last time Smith went looking for coordinators with little time left on his deal, the Bears got embarrassed as candidates turned down interviews or flat blew them off. Smith seemed to have no choice but to dump more responsibility on Rod Marinelli and bring in Martz because he was the last guy at the dance, it seemed.

That was part of the reason Smith promoted Tice seemingly before Martz hit the Tri-State. If that’s the profile for minimizing regular Bears messes, would Smith promote, say, Darryl Drake from wide receivers coach? Do you trust the judgment of a guy who went along with the gag that Devin Hester is a No. 1 receiver?

Maybe Smith could make Cutler the offensive coordinator the way the McCaskeys foolishly endorsed making Smith the de facto general manager.

Understand, this would be far less of an issue for the Bears if they knew how to run a general manager search --- geez, if they even knew what a general manager did.

If this was being run from the top down the way chairman George McCaskey claimed but failed to execute, you’d expect the coaching staff to be looking elsewhere because the new GM would bring in his own coach, who would bring in his own staff. This is a revolutionary concept for the Bears, sort of like a game-breaking wide receiver.

But the Bears are the Bears. There’s no situation with a conventional blue print that they can’t turn into another laughable example, such as the self-inflicted obstacles of mandating the new so-called GM retain the head coach and giving the head coach input in the process. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.

So, the Bears are interviewing fake GM candidates whose expertise is the draft. The first guy they interviewed, New England’s director of pro personnel Jason Licht, has never had a seat in the Patriots’ draft room.

Yes. Of course. That’s exactly the kind of guy you’d bet the Bears would talk to.

Attention, Bears: Being in the draft room is not some ceremonial thing. The draft room is where decisions are actually made. It’s where futures are made. It’s where you ensure you don’t miss the playoffs four out of five years.

But Licht’s table wasn’t ready. Except in a meeting with the Bears. Maybe they figure Licht has the ability to divine Bill Belichick’s thoughts.

Or maybe the Bears don’t understand the concept.

Maybe the Bears don’t understand a lot of things.

Bob Bostad named new oline coach

Bob Bostad (pronounced BO-stad) was in his sixth season as an assistant coach at Wisconsin. He was named run game coordinator in February of 2007 and became the Badgers’ offensive line coach in January of 2008 after coaching tight ends his first two seasons.

Under Bostad’s tutelage, UW’s offensive line has become one of the preeminent position groups in the country. In the last two seasons, four different offensive linemen have earned first-team All-America honors. The Badgers have also dominated the All-Big Ten teams the last two seasons, placing six offensive linemen on all-conference teams a year ago and having five honored this season.
