***Chicago Bears Thread*** Ben Johnson hired. The Resurrection Begins! (5 Viewers)

Watson, Mahomes & now Kizer all selected after Mitch Trubisky & all 3 playing with the 2's in the 2nd preseason game.

I have to agree with flap here, I don't understand why they're handling Glennon with kid gloves. Glennon hasn't proven a single thing in the league but even if he had he still shouldn't be coddled. I remember hearing Brady say something along the lines of "I go into practice every day as if I'm fighting for my job.". If they want to elevate Glennon's play a QB competition is in fact the best thing for him.

There are multiple things at play here.

- Glennon's salary and NFL starting experience. (Although limited)

- Trubisky's limited starting experience.

- The fact that the team is going to be lucky to win 6 games this season.

Best case scenario is they hand the starting job week 1 to Trubisky and he takes the Bears to 8 wins.

Worst case scenario, Trubisky gets hurt or regressed in his progress.

Too many examples of QBs starting too early and failing. The Bears have the perfect situation to bring him along slowly. Nobody expects them to win this season and they have a veteran qb they are paying.

What is the downside of waiting?

Start glennon the first 5 weeks vs the good teams, if you're not 1-4 keep him in. If glennon can't beat those good teams put in Mitch vs the bad ones and let him get going.

Good luck justifying that to the rest of the team.  If they can protect him and have a running game, there's no way the rest of the team will buy into this.

I get why they want to keep starting Glennon.  He's new on the team and hasn't played much in the NFL as of late so he needs reps just as badly, if not more than Trubisky.  The Chiefs have a true starter so they don't need to play Smith and can give Mahomes more time.  The Browns and Texans are pretty much in the same situation as the Bears though so it sucks seeing them give their rookies time.

THE 2's!  They're all playing with the 2s!!! Not playing with the 1s...yet is OK. Mitch is being playing like a guy who may not even make the team. The other guys are being played like rookies who are being brought along well.   This week can change all of that if Fox bumps him up, though.

I'd say start Glennon all 16 games, unless injured.  We aren't winning this year either way, in my opinion, and another top 3-5 pick next year would give us a ton of trade ammo with the "supposed" QB class that's coming out next year.  Or, we grab the best available OL to keep Trubisky upright for the long term.

You don't come out and say it, but you start the season trying to win vs a tough slate. If you're 0-5 or 1-4 and the schedule is going to soften up why not get the playing experience to the guy you drafted for the long haul- even traded up for. At 1-4 the season is pretty much almost in the tank already, tough to climb out of that. Then you spare the rookie trying to come out and beating good teams and give him a winnable game home vs bal. I suppose this scenario would also mean glennon is playing poorly since they are losing, so why not? If you're competitive with glennon then you keep rolling him out and try to get a wildcard.

Or you take one of the top QB's.

Just sayin.

If you want to remain a losing franchise with a losing culture, sure. Lose games on purpose and explain that to the rest of the guys. This isn't imaginary football.

I'm not opposed to this at all. I think the the Bears are going to be better than many people think, though.  The roster is much improved since first season. Why wouldn't they be better?

Mitch Trubisky got reps with the 1's today.

Fox did go on to say that Glennon will get the first half on Sunday then Trubisky somewhere after. Depth chart "unchanged". #Bears

Glennon will start the 1st half & Trubisky will start the second half. Most importantly, Trubisky will get time with the 1's. #Bears

Some excerpts from Trubisky at podium.

Bears QB Mitch Trubisky: "I think I've progressed faster than they expected I would, but I've still got a long ways to go."

Why does Bears QB Mitch Trubisky sense his progress has outpaced the team's expectation?
"I just kind of get that feel."

#Bears QB Mitch Trubisky said all the right things. But my sense is that he senses he's changed the conversation. Exuded strong confidence.

#Bears rookie QB Mitch Trubisky said Dowell Loggains informed him yesterday that he would work with the 1s in some form today.

#Bears QB Mitch Trubisky said he feels like he's further along in his development than the team expected, but he still has much to learn.

FWIW, that's as confident as we've seen Trubisky at a media session. He knows he earned this chance. It's positive reinforcement. #Bears

Will admit I'm pretty shocked Fox is considering it.  I could be wrong on my prediction of what he would do. Still thinks Glennon starts beginning of season, regardless of what happens the rest of the way.

Fox: "Right now Glennon’s the starter. He’s going to start preseason gm 3, which is usually a good indicator where you start the season.”l

You can't believe much of what Fox says during conferences.  Just have to wait and see what they do.  For some reason Fox is super paranoid about revealing things to the media.

What do you use as qualifiers? Halas and Ditka won Superbowls. (or championships) Lovie got close. Is that enough? Everyone else sucks?

For me it's coaches that I've watched and paid attention too.  I remember Ditka a little because he was so popular.  The others I remember were **** Jauron, Dave Wannstedt, Lovie Smith, Marc Trestman and now Fox.  Never really cared for any of them other than Lovie and even he was boring.

Why? and define boring?

I thought they all sucked.  Didn't like the teams they put on the field.  Didn't care for their personalities.  Granted, I was just a kid for all the coaches up to Lovie.  Lovie was fine but he was boring.  He showed very little emotion.  I loved the defensive he put together but it was never enough, he just couldn't put an offense together.  I'd take him back though after these last few years.

So there's no hope for any coach of the Bears. If you could make any current head coach and make him the Bears head coach, who would it be?

Have you posted anything in this thread that wasn't a snarky response to me?  You don't like my posts in here. That's fine. Let's move past that and discuss football.
I am discussing football. (bears coaches you like).  You're reading things snarky.

Has there been one worth liking?  Lovie was pretty good but could only put a defense together.
I respected Lovie because he was a good human being.  But he was also a expert defensive mind.  Put the Cover 2 into place as good as anyone ever has. Brilliant defensive coordinator.  Sadly, he could never field an offense worth anything.  I'm not sure how much that was on him, though. Wonderful person

But did you like him as a coach?

And I liked him a lot for a few years. But it was time for him to move on toward the end.

Lovie had a loyalty to his players and coaches that's rarely seen in the business. Dungy was the same way.  I had great respect for him for that. Hard to say from the outside looking in, but I think his loyalty sometimes affected his decisions a little too much.

Fired after a 10-6 season. We'd kill for that now, wouldn't we.
Well hell yeah!  But that just means Ted and George have continued to make awful decisions. Missed on Arians and Gase. Barring a miracle, they'll be hiring their third coach since Lovie next year.  And I don't know if any highly sought after coaches becoming available next year, unless Harbaugh leaves college or McDaniels leaves New England.

I give Pace some #### for good reason sometimes. He's made quite a few dumb signings in free agency. But the guy has started to turn the roster into something respectable through the draft and now probably has a franchise qb.  The defense has a lot of talent now. I think it'll be a very appealing job after Fox.

Fox: "This was something we talked about & planned a long time ago. This is our last opportunity to get a look at (Trubisky) w/ the 1’s."

But didn't Jerry Angelo and Lovie get a lot of crap for not being able to draft a safety. Very few coaches have continued success year after year. That's why I asked, if you could change coaches with any team in the league, who would you want.

For me, the obvious would be Belichick. But only because of record. I think he's a tool. After that, things get much more difficult. Arians has some success, but no Super Bowl rings with the Cardinals. I don't see him as being that much different than Lovie.
