***Chicago Bears Thread*** Ben Johnson hired. The Resurrection Begins! (6 Viewers)

This may be the worst take I've seen on here.  He hasn't looked horrendous at all.  Mitch has tons of potential and he's the QB for a couple years now.
He made some good throws yesterday. Inman almost had 100 yards receiving, going mostly against Rhodes on those catches.

I'll give Fox this: Even with the losses, the team is in a much better position than when he got here. They're no longer getting embarrassed on a regular basis and the defense is worlds better. Team is not unstable and in shambles like it was 3 years ago.  But Fox took them as far as he was going to. Time to bring in an offensive guy and turn it around.
I agree. He said something along the lines of “the heavy lifting has been done” and in some regards it has. It should be an interesting offseason.

To the CHI fans keeping a close eye on this, is it a good time to snag Shaheen, Trubisky, Cohen as under the radar players?  I can't help but think of the transformation of Goff with a new system/coaching staff/weapons and also Wentz with 2nd year changes too.

Looks like more of the same, fellas.

Pace described it as “a collaborative effort with George, Ted and myself, with me spearheading that effort and ultimately making the final decision on this.”

McCaskey said he and Phillips “are both available to Ryan as sounding boards, to play devil’s advocate.”

Phillips said he and McCaskey “are going to be support resources for Ryan” and would travel with Pace for interviews.

I haven't been following this as much as I probably should have.  I like underdogs, the Clevelands and Chicagos of the NFL world.

I watched Chicago pretty closely LAST YEAR , and even then I thought they had a few good elements in place.  Cohen and Trubisky intrigued me this season.  When I watched Trubisky in the preseason, I loved his "fling it" type of passing. Its hard to describe, but I like watching him in action. Now if he actually turns out to be the franchise guy they were hoping for?????  Not sure, but he still may. I do know in a few games he looked bad that I saw, but in others he had some moments of brilliance.

Some of you guys here that are more die hard fans and watched every play may know more about what they really think of Trubisky.  I'm guessing by midseason next year, we are going to know if he will be "their guy" or not.

JOHN FOX - Even as a casual fan, that didn't see much Bears game action (mostly RedZone, and THAT WAS REALLY LIMITED :D ) I did notice some terrible play calling, and questionable decisions. Its like I could sense the Bears fan's frustration at times when they showed Fox on the sidelines doing his best " I'm content to lose" act.  :wall:

I do know Jeff Fisher has been sniffing around the league, and posturing for another job somewhere. (His comments about leaving the Rams "in a position to succeed" were kinda epic) :excited:

I don't know where Fisher may end up, but if he somehow ends up with the Bears, I fully expect to come here and see flapgreen openly admitting to seeking therapy. LOL.

Jokes aside, I really want to see the Bears turn into a 2017-ish Rams style big offense. I guess I would be satisfied with something about 20% less of what that is though.

The days of me combing the Bears over looking for a WR3 type for my leagues (a' la' Johnny Knox) are hopefully over. I'd like to see them bring in one truly solid big name WR. I don't mind KENDALL WRIGHT, or CAMERON MEREDITH , but I'd like to see one bigger talent. I think a true #1WR would help.

With Shaheen at TE, and a decent running game, there are a few good pieces there. If they can get Trubisky to settle down a touch, this team could be interesting. Maybe not a Super Bowl caliber team, but they could certainly be interesting.

 TZM

I see a lot of potential talent on the team that could be pretty good with better coaching and play calling.  I think everyone knows that Howard is a great back already.  Cohen adds a spark to the offense and change of pace.  I feel it's important to have Howard and Cohen on the field together a good amount.  Shaheen flashed some and I think it's obvious he's athletic but we need to see a lot from him.  The WRs are trash as a unit but there is some hope from a couple players.  Inman showed he's worth keeping and should start.  Wright showed he can play as well but neither are that WR1.  The Bears need a true WR1 threat and with Inman,Wright and then Meredith healthy they could have a good unit.

I'd like to see the OL bolstered to protect Mitch.  I really think he's going to be good but he needs help.  He not only needs the players around him early but he also needs a good coach.  Once the Bears have that I think the offense will be in pretty good shape.  The defense is already pretty good and improved every year.  I hope they find a way to keep Fangio because he's proved to be a great coach.  A couple of nice additions to the D and it's close to a top 10 unit.

Bears have requested to speak to the following Offensive Minds: 1) John DeFilipo 2) Josh McDaniels 3) Pat Shurmur
Not McDaniels, not McDaniels, not McDaniels. Whoever hires McDaniels will discover the Belichick effect. McDaniels looks really good as an offensive coordinator if Belichick is the head coach. Without Belichick you will discover that McDaniels is not that good. What people forget is that not only was McDaniels a ####ty head coach, but he then proceeded to be a ####ty offensive coordinator for the Rams. The Rams couldn't wait to get rid of him. So I would not be the least bit excited about McDaniels.

Here is the problem. While McDaniels was supposedly finding himself in StLouis, he was being a terrible OC for the Rams. So all this learning that he was supposedly doing didn't seem to translate at all in St Louis. So he is saying the right things but outside of NE he has been really bad. There have been a long string of Belichick assistants that have been failures as Head Coaches. Bill O'Brien may break that string, but he had one good year and one bad. Betting on Belichick assistants has been a losing proposition. I see nothing that would make me believe McDaniels will be any different.

I don't think McDaniels is going to want anything to do with the Bears unless for some reason he's completely in love with Trubisky.  I think he's the hot name and will have his choice of jobs outside of Oakland, and I don't see the Bears being his choice.  He needs to succeed this time, and the Bears are not really in the best position for that in my opinion.  I bet he takes his chances with Luck in Indy personally.

I disagree.

Darnold coming out helps the Bears a lot. Could be 3-4 QBs taken in the top 7.  Would leave Bears with a top 4-5 pick not a qb. That's a huge catch. OT, pass rusher, CB, Nelson at guard

do you think taking a WR at that spot will be a reach?
Yes, definitely. There's no Julio or AJ in this draft.  Only time you take a WR or RB that high is if you already have a loaded team everywhere else. Pace won't make that mistake again. I'll bet he goes hard at wr in Free agency and the middle rounds of the draft.

Prediction: Out of all the QB's in the NFL Trubisky has the closest resemblance to Tim Tebow. McDaniels loves Tim Tebow and sees glimpses of what could have been if Tebow learned how to throw a forward pass. McDaniels = Bears 2018 Coach.

That all sounds terrible.

That's Flip interviewing Wentz
DeFilippo just has this authoritative, knowledgeable presence about him that I admire from just those two vids.  Very well spoken and doesn't seem like a BSer like Fox was.  Did an awesome job with Wentz.

Watched a couple of Nagy vids and he described things at a 10,000-foot view (Fox spoke at like the 100,000-foot view), while DeFilippo isn't afraid to get into the details and terminology, which I like.

Never change, Flip.  Get him in here.

Whether it's Nagy or Flip or someone else, it will be as much about the staff they assemble than anything else. Which guy can assemble an entire staff and manage it the best? We know they're both great offensive minds. Here's hoping Pace picks the right one.

One of the few positives on the season.  Bears allowed 2nd least amount of offensive TDs in league league. Tied with Vikings and 2 behind the Pats. Not bad. Overall, 5 fewer ppg than last year.

All while having the 29th ranked offense ppg and 28th ranked time of possession. Imagine if we can just field a competent offense and add another pass rusher and CB

Lamar Jackson declared.  Makes Darnold, Rosen, Allen, Mayfield, Jackson likely going in 1st round. Trading back and getting more picks looking better all the time.

Gonna be flip or Nagy. I'll lean Nagy
I still like Shurmur at this point.  I like the fact that the offense has been 100% his and he's running with it.  He's created the playbook, he's, game planning each week, he's responsible for play calling.  Now maybe he's not an inspiring leader when you meat him and yeah, that could take him right out, but the work he's done with Minn has been 100% his.

I worry with those other guys that have been working under Offensive coaches, or under OC's that they aren't the ones responsible to scheme their offenses or play call, and you really aren't sure what you are getting.  An OC under a Defensive coach usually has unquestioned authority on that side of the ball.  Not saying the other names on here won't work, or that i'd be pissed if we hire one.  I just worry that being a good QB coach doesn't mean you are ready to game plan an entire offense.

Flip was OC in Cleveland in 2015.  Did a pretty good job with what they had there, which wasn't much.

This is a top 10 D.
Credit where credit is due. Bears finished 10th in total defense.

(Don't let your head get too big for your beanie, it's cold outside)

1) Franchise QB.

2) LT

3) RT
4) 2 CBs
5) TE
6) FS
7) 17
8) Another WR
9) more pass rushers
Bumping this to compare to this year.  Not a bad year of acquiring through the draft.

Now:

1)Have a franchise qb

2) Have LT. Little did I know Leno would continue to progress. Great

4) Possibly have both CBs now. Prince and Fuller.

5) Have our TE of the future

6) Have a SS and FS

Still need:

RT

Multiple WRs

Multiple Pass Rushers

Guard

Kicker

1) yep hopefully you are right, time will tell.

2) You are nuts, he is barely average. Still need LT badly.

3) Again nuts, prince average, though maybe fuller finally figured it out.

agree with the rest.

Oh come on. Fuller had a huge season and Prince was above average. Although, I don't think they can afford both of them.  Still an extremely good combo in the secondary along with Jackson and Amos. Didn't think they could improve the secondary that quickly.

Obviously, it will take time on the QB but they went for it.

You're just wrong on Leno. Very good season and he's under an affordable contract. Top 15 LT.  Look up his stats on the year. We are set. He's nearing a top 5 LT if you toss out all the guys over the age of 30 at LT.

Bears only hold Fangio's rights until Tuesday and they just blocked Bengals from interviewing him for DC.  Pretty obvious the organization wants to try and keep him on with whoever they hire as HC. Interesting situation

Seems like kinda a #### move to me. Let him interview, new HC may not even want him, let the guy go out and find a job. Still express we want him back and hope he can delay his decision.

Surely they'll let the head coach decide. If they let him go now and he gets an offer, no way they can keep him.  I'm fine with it and actually kinda like it.
