THIS JUST IN! REED JOHNSON TO THE BRAVES!

10:08pm: The Cubs are getting two minor league pitchers in the deal, ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick tweets. Mike Minor, Randall Delgado, Julio Teheran and Sean Gilmartin aren't in the trade.
Thanks Jerry, we were all on the edge of our seats wondering if the Braves actually traded a player worth anything for Reed Johnson. Now we know.

Looks like the Cubs received Cashner 2.0 (Vizcaino), a AAA RH MR whose quality K rate is masked by his bad BB rate, and a AA RH starter who can't get lefties out but is otherwise solid.

So in the end the Cubs received...

Arodys Vizcaino, RHP - 94+ fastball and a power curveball, changeup and elbow issues could turn him into a late inning reliever, currently out after tommy john, MLB ready for bullpen

Christian Villanueva, 3B - plus defender who should hit for average and get on base, the development of his power is a question mark, 27 total HR in last 2 years (842 AB), playing in high A

Kyle Hendricks, RHP - a plus changeup to go with 89-91 fastball, curveball, and occasional slider, knows how to pitch and deceive, 7.71 K/9 and 1.03 BB/9 in high A this year, back of rotation upside

Jake Brigham, RHP - fastball/curveball (88-92 mph), getting crushed by lefties this year in AA, 8.42 K/9

Jaye Chapman, RHP - a changeup reliever who lacks velocity, 10.1 K/9 and 5.67 BB/9 in AAA this year, 2 option years left

It looks like the Cubs have added their best pitching prospect, their best 3B prospect unless Baez is forced there, and Hendricks is probably at worst on par with the best of Cubs prospects (not including Dillon Maples and the recent picks who we haven't seen much of).

The more I read about Villanueva it seems he could be able to play 2B as well. He could turn into a very useful player for a contending team.

I am a big fan of Villanueva, top 15 prospect in a loaded Texas system. Biggest issue with him is that he was blocked by Beltre and Olt, and has Joey Gallo behind him, so there was no way he was going to play 3B for Texas. He has played some at 2B, so he could be interesting with the right team.

I love the type of player the Cubs are targeting. They are loading up on starting pitching wherever they can get them but they add position players when they defend their position well and have some offensive upside. The draft typified this along with the acquisition of DeJesus, Stewart, Wood, Volstad, etc... in the offseason. They know that they can't get elite prospects for anyone aside from possibly Garza so they are adding depth when they can and throwing around money at every opportunity. I heard that they were offering money in almost every proposed deal in order to raise the level of prospect. That might be what got them Vizcaino. This team still has a long way to go and 2013 might not be much better than 2012, but I love the direction the organization is headed and the financial backing of ownership.

I know there have been some horrible renditions of Take Me Out to the Ballgame over the years, but Steve Trout's today was one of the absolute worst. He sounded like he had a good sense of humor about it, but man, that was awful.

Bob Newhart and Jane Byrne are going to parachute into Wrigley to declare the Brett Jackson Golden Sombrero games open.
As of now, not getting the call.
Who had game #2 in the Golden Sombrero pool?
Hopefully they have a reason for bringing him up. It was pretty obvious that he would struggle before last night. 33% k rates don't improve when promoted.
He's had almost 700 PAs at AAA. They might as well use the last two months of a lost season to see whether Jackson stands any chance against Major League pitching.

I suppose. But it is almost certainly clear he isn't succeeding with his current approach. So the though has to be that he has a better chance of altering his approach with the Cubs rather than in Iowa. Now will that be because of coaching and maybe Rizzo helping or will it be because he will see how badly prepared he is and a willingness to change will follow.

Castro locked up through 2019
Very happy. It baffles me how I still see comments about him maybe needing to move from short. He is without question the SS for this team for the next 7 years and has developed into an upper tier defensive SS who will only continue to improve on his footwork and awareness.

Like this season hasn't been bad enough for the NorthSiders....

Now you have your bench coach acting like a ##### about an opposing player swinging at a 3-0 pitch in the 5th? I don't care what the score is (for the record, it was 7-2), if you can put runs up in the middle innings, you do it.

And then you follow it up by throwing at Harper in the next inning?

The whole organization should be ashamed of themselves, but then again, when you have a roster full of Bush league players it shouldn't be surprising to see them act like it.

And if I'm Theo / Jed, Jamie Quirk's getting his walking papers this morning.

So I've been boycotting the Cubs the last few years because I grew to hate 1) Jim Hendry and 2) Bob Brenly.

I'm back, baby!!

The rotation is shaping up assuming they start the season with Garza.

Garza

Samardzija

Baker

Wood

Feldman

I do think there is decent upside in the group. Vizcaino will probably take a slot in the 2nd half of the season. They probably are still looking at adding another starter. However, the prices seem to be on the high side this offseason so I don't expect a name bigger than McCarthy/Marcum.

While it is obvious someone will be moved if the team isn't (as likely) in contention, I am hoping we at least are watching 5 MLB quality starters in September.

MLB Network

Matt and Harold welcome many guests today on Hot Stove, LIVE at 9am ET, including Giants closer and World Series Champion Sergio Romo, Cubs new assistant hitting coach Rob Deer and Sports on Earth columnist Will Leitch.

:lmao:

See you later Bob.
How do you not like Brenly?
Bad jokes were one of the reasons. There were others but my boycott affected my memory.
I loved Brenly. Was really looking forward to him being the voice of the Cubs for a long time.

We have Jim Deshaies now. I don't think I've ever heard him. Any opinions? Apparently Kasper was lobbying for him which is a good sign.

Looks like Sappelt/Schierholtz in RF and DeJesus in CF until Brett Jackson loses super 2 status and if he shows he won't K 40% of the time. Bourgeois might just be the 5th OF since he can play CF at least as well as DeJesus and has handled LHP pretty well. Not excited about CF defense now and the offense from CF/RF probably will end up around league average.

So for now...

Castillo/Rizzo/Barney/Valbuena/Castro/Soriano/DeJesus/Schierholtz

Navarro/MI/CI/Bourgeois/Sappelt

I assume they are looking for a RH 3B to pair with Valbuena or maybe Stewart with Valbuena becoming the utility guy.

Astros fan. Jim was very good. knowledgable with some sense of humor and a few pop culture references, but does not stray too far from baseball. Does not have any signature phrases nor is a blind homer. Very professional and human at the same time.

They need a left hander in the rotation and Deshaies is probably still better than Travis Wood

Hey now. We are feeling pretty decent right now. No need for this.

If you take out three starts where Wood gave up a total of 12 HRs in 15.0 IP, his season looks a lot better.

I still have hopes for him. He was a mess to begin the season. He will have to earn time this year. Garza, Shark, Jackson, and Baker have to be the top 4 with Feldman, Wood, Villanueva fighting for the 5th spot. Of course Garza and Baker could possibly miss the beginning of the season so everybody could get some time to show what they can do. The lefty could be ticketed for the bullpen in the end.

Get ready guys, best time of the year for Cubbie fans is right around the corner! :confetti:
