Garza apparently looked good during his session yesterday but they cut it short. Now he's scheduled for an MRI—they're calling it a lat strain right now.
First time in a long time that wait till next year might actually mean something. Most of the $$ is coming off the books, and there are some legitimate position players on this team. Who do they target in free agency/trades?This Soler kid looks legit. 2014 looking brighter every day.

Hopefully Garza will be healthy enough to trade away.Easy to put them down with Baker and Garza out but still they don't have close to the worst rotation.Outside of Smaj, they may have the worst staff in the NL

I don't think they're that bad. Once Garza and Baker are healthy they'll at least have pretty good depth. I'll be bold enough to say the starters will be middle of the pack.Outside of Smaj, they may have the worst staff in the NL
And here we get our first big surprise. Yes, the Chicago Cubs, top ten rotation in baseball. At least, according to this system. Samardzija/Jackson/Garza give the team three guys who can miss bats at the front of the rotation, at least when Garza eventually gets healthy anyway, and the front office did a nice job assembling a collection of underrated guys to fill out the last few spots in the rotation over the winter. If they kept all these guys together for the whole season, the Cubs might be surprisingly decent, at least on the mound. But, that’s where one flaw of this system likely comes out. We’re just projecting out depth charts based on current rosters, not accounting for likely transactions throughout the season. And, let’s be honest, no one expects Matt Garza to finish the year with the Cubs. And if Scott Baker or Scott Feldman are pitching well in July, you’d have to imagine that Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer would be taking calls on those two as well. This Cubs team is still building for the future, and with three starters on the last year of their deals, this rotation probably doesn’t stick together all season. So, expect the Cubs actual performance to be worse than this, especially in the second half of the season. But, it’s still worth noting that the group they’ve currently assembled is actually pretty interesting.
I liked their staff a lot better two months ago. Garza and Baker both have to be considered question marks now. There's a big difference between Scott Feldman as a #5 and a #3.ZIPS/Steamer projections actually have the Cubs' rotation ranked 9th.![]()

Adam Wainwright - S - CardinalsDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals and Adam Wainwright "continue to accelerate" negotiations on a contract extension. There's a mutually understood deadline of Opening Day, but sources from both sides have expressed optimism that an agreement will get done. Wainwright, 31, is currently due to become a free agent following the 2013 season. He's thought to be looking for a five-year deal.

I'm not seeing a whole lot that would help this team get to where they want to go.They need to trade for an ace. I mentioned David Price earlier. The Rays can't/won't pay him what he'll command, and I don't think he'll take a team friendly deal after they traded James Shields away. Samardzija looks like he can be a good #2. Edwin Jackson + someone from that list (Josh Johnson maybe?) as the #3 and #4, and hope Arodys Vizcaino or another young arm can do something at the back end of the rotation.lots of OLD on that list
more like Schmucks.......This is a combined effort by the coaching staff and front office people who's job it is to move him......I've said it before, He's not a pitcher, he's a guy who just throws the ball and hopes it lands where the catcher's glove is.At some point you have to stop blaming poor Carlos and start blaming the schmuck that continues to put him out there in a save situation. Looking at you, Dale.
Could be wrong, they aren't asking for money anymore. They just want permission to renovate.Nice that the most profitable team in baseball needs Wrigley Field renovations to get to the 'next level' They can go f themselves. I hope Rahm dosen't give them a dime.
Could be right.... I'd hope that's the case. To be fair, I only read the headline and assumed status quo from last year.Could be wrong, they aren't asking for money anymore. Marmol pitched well in the second half last season. At some point you have to stop blaming poor Carlos and start blaming the schmuck that continues to put him out there in a save situation. Looking at you, Dale.
I know it was only the Pirates, but that was a very strong showing. Like they said during the telecast, he's a power pitcher, but he doesn't lean on his fastball the way some other power pitches do. Showing great command of that slider and his cut fastball looked downright brutal today. Very mature performance from him, I thought. He never got rattled.more like Schmucks.......This is a combined effort by the coaching staff and front office people who's job it is to move him......I've said it before, He's not a pitcher, he's a guy who just throws the ball and hopes it lands where the catcher's glove is.At some point you have to stop blaming poor Carlos and start blaming the schmuck that continues to put him out there in a save situation. Samardzjia on the other hand pitched his ### off and looked good spotting mutiple pitches.

Marmol is awful, just awful in closing situations. I cringe whenever he gets the call from the pen.Marmol pitched well in the second half last season. At some point you have to stop blaming poor Carlos and start blaming the schmuck that continues to put him out there in a save situation. Maybe he thought it was Bruce RondonWhy does Sveum have their rule 5 pick pitching in the fifth inning down two runs???
The second part of your statement I agree with.......however I think its the wrong message to send to the guy (Jackson) who you just gave a large contract to, and who's making his first start with the team.Maybe he thought it was Bruce RondonWhy does Sveum have their rule 5 pick pitching in the fifth inning down two runs???![]()
ETA: I like the decision. It tells Rondon and the rest of the organization that he's a legitimate member of the staff. Roster spots are precious and there's no point in burning a spot for a Rule 5 guy who's not going to be given the opportunity to contribute.
