***Chicago Cubs Thread*** (1 Viewer)

I went to the home opener. They had a very nice ceremony for Lee Smith. An interview with him played on the video board. He was very humble and grateful about his induction. Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, Andre Dawson and Ryne Sandberg escorted him out to the mound where he threw out the first pitch.

Greg Maddux was the lone living HOF'er who was absent. No explanation given. I hope there wasn't another falling out between him and management, though there is the sense that something has bubbled up.

Coomer had some high praise for Lee Smith. I liked his line, if you didn't get along with Lee Smith you are the problem.

What’s not to believe in?

3rd best winning %(NL Best)

Best RD in game

not bad for a team that looked dead at 1-6
Maybe it's just me?  Feels like they sleep walked through the last two seasons and the start of this one so I had kind of checked out.

Pitching/Fielding were their biggest concerns the first 7 games, the offense has looked dangerous from go

Looks like the sleeping giant has woken up

What is worrisome is the number of off-days they have had, including a snow out, which will be made up at the end of the season when they play thirty games in thirty-two days.

They ran out of gas last September, in particular the bullpen. A repeat would not be a good thing.

Some Cubs observations:

Javy Baez is one of the most underrated fantasy players. Every “expert” said he was going to high and should be left until the 4th round. Lololol, he’s awesome.

Cole Hamels has a great head of hair

A few years ago I thought Albert Almora was black. When I saw him bat tonight, I thought to myself  that he should be black. I don’t think I’m gonna get past this.

Baez in the 4th round?  Damn - give me some of whatever they were smoking.

Don't follow baseball too closely anymore, but Tyler Chatwood actually threw 6 scoreless innings in one outing recently and only walked 2 guys!?!?!? :lmao:

Holy ####. That's amazing

Edit: Even more amazing, he's actually went 6 innings and only walked 2 once before in his Cubs career last year.

Welcome, CarGo.

The signing is reminiscent of when the Cubs signed Jim Edmonds for the 2008 team. He still had some gas left in the tank and provided a jolt to the lineup.

Hope CarGo can do the same.

Kimbrel 👍

3/43 with club option for 4th.
They are saying a June 20th debut against the NYM, but that seems rushed. The Greg Holland debacle from last year should be a flashing red light.

A better scenario would be the weekend before the All-Star break against the White Sox on the South Side. Try to get him into both games, or at least warmup for both games, then get a four-day breather, and start the second half in full throttle.

Cards prob don't want to see Cole Hamels for awhile.  Within the last 6 days he's thrown 15 innings against them w/o allowing an earned run (1 unearned). Only 5 hits allowed and 14 K's.

👍

The Cubs announced that Brandon Morrow will not pitch this season.

He was signed for two years 18 million, with a 3 million buyout.  He had twenty-two saves, which means he earned about one million dollars for each save.

He went through a lot of pain though.

Morrow was nasty when healthy.

He comes across as a good dude who tries very hard, and feels bad about how this all turned out.

I am sure it was difficult to live down comparisons to the pitchers taken after him in the 2006 draft.

It saddens me that we are possibly watching the end of their playoff run.    If they make the playoffs, I can't see them beating Washington in a one-game playoff.

Joe deserves to come back. Yes, he has his quirks with bullpen management, but he is a rock solid manager, with great instincts, and excellent control of the clubhouse.

The poor roster construction, the inability to develop a single frontline SP in eight drafts, the rushing of Kimbrel to the majors, is all on Theo/Jed.

Agreed, this season isn’t Joes fault
