And the Cubs are gonna face a couple minor-league starters on fill-in duty for the Cards, right? If they can't take this series, it'll be a bigger downer than the last one.

Lyons and Cooney in the double header tomorrow. The Cubs' starter for game 2 seems to be up in the air as well though. Looks like they're skipping Richard.

Hopefully they can pull this one out 12-11 and take the series tomorrow.

 
girlfriend is going to buy me tickets to sox game on Sunday for my birthday. looks like prices are through the roof. any good ideas or options???

 
Go to Wrigleyville, wait until the second inning, then hit up one of the brokers

If tix are still too high, hit up a couple bars and watch it there.

 
I know Strop has the better strikeout stuff, but I like Rondon better in the 9th.

Since his "demotion," Rondon has been nearly unhittable. Now, I can understand Motte ascending into the closer role. I think Maddon was a bit quick to make that move, but it's working and Motte clearly has the mindset and approach for the job. But Strop surpassing Rondon was taking it a step too far, imo.

 
Why in the hell was Strop throwing anything but sliders, when the count on Peralta went to 1-2 ?

There's a lower chance of a homer when he throws his slider.

It totally pisses me off when pitchers try and outsmart themselves. I understand it may have not been his call, maybe the bench or Montero.

Oh well, life goes on. Just had to vent.

And his fastball command was way off. First the walk to Carpenter. Peralta was taking the first pitch slider all the way. Then Strop's fastball sailed on him.

Strop has 6 BS in 10 chances. He has an electric slider, but can't command his fastball, walks guys, and while he's not long ball prone, he does give them up more often than Rondon. I just don't understand why Maddon prefers Strop in the 9th. Maybe with men on to work out of a jam, but pitching the entire 9th I'd like Rondon every time. Doesn't walk guys. Commands his fastball. So he doesn't have an elite wipeout pitch. Big deal.

Legit is such a strong word. I'd be OK with maintaining a nice 2-3 game cushion. Let them get close enough to spit on us, but not so close we can feel the bulge against our asses.

 
Solid first half. A few let downs in the week before the break, but you have to love seeing this team playing winning baseball again. Now we'll see if the young guys regress or improve in the second half. And whether the front office can land a helpful SP. Exciting times on the north side.

 
It's interesting. I haven't even been all that impressed with the "young guys." Bryant has been pretty much as advertised, but he's still striking out in just under 30% of his AB's. Russell is playing a slick second base, but he's been a negative player offensively. Soler has looked completely lost at the plate for most of the season.

Hendricks has been a nice surprise, but he wasn't considered one of the major prospects from the farm.

Glass half full though is there's still a lot of upside to be had.

Not from the big league roster or Schwarber anyway. They really just need a reliable mid-rotation arm right now. And no injuries of course. There's absolutely no depth.

Also, why doesn't anyone work with Lester on throwing to the bases? They really can't teach this clown to throw over in between starts? What does the Chicago media say/ask about it? Does he refuse to even practice it? Just go out on the damn mound and do it 100 times until you're comfortable. He's a professional freaking athlete. Embarrassing.

 
The biggest disappointment is Castro. He doesn't look comfortable at the plate at all. Fowler is right behind him.

While Lester isn't looking like an ace so far and the pickoff situation is a joke, his numbers are actually pretty good. I am not too worried about him. He has pitched a couple years already without throwing to first. These professional mind blocks are incomprehensible.

I don't think Soler is looking lost at the plate. He has had a fair number of horrible strike calls against him and he also has rocketed the ball into a ton of outs. He hasn't found a comfort zone yet but I think he will be the 2nd best hitter (better than Bryant) on this team when he does.

I fear (relatively) Bryant's development a bit because his contact rate is suspect. He has a great eye for the strike zone and has to have battled for more walks from an 0-2 count that anybody in baseball. However, he has a very high BABIP and still a just an okay batting average. I think his ceiling is limited. He will still be All Star level but I doubt he will push for MVPs if the can't connect more often.

The staters have been elite this year. All they need is an innings eater so I don't see a major deal. The bigger hole is CF versus RHP. I hear of Gerardo Parra and Will Venable but not sure about their CF defense. Don't know who else is available. Despite his offensive shortcomings, Russell is a good enough 2B because his range is unreal.

I couldn't expect much more so far so I am happy. The fight for the wildcard will be fun to watch and they have a chance. Unreal how good the division is right now. The NL Central will a great fight for years to come.
