Just a few more weeks until this person plays in a regular season game and officially goes into the books as the most embarrassing name in NFL history. I suppose Christine is better than Susan or Dorothy or Jennifer, though.

That was just a shortened form of his real name. Joe Girardi does this with most of his players and it makes them sound goofy or boyish or even girlish. Robbie

Georgie

Lynn Swann sounds feminine but again that first name is unisex.

Mr. Chris Michael looked awesome last night.

I think beast mode might get rested here and there this year.... of if the Hawks want to do the Thunder & Lightning thing, they can do that too.

Ashley was originally a boys name, Rosey was a nickname, and Dana means from Denmark.

Looks like Michael's mom did the same thing Obama's grandfather did to his mom (Stanley):

COLLEGE STATION - Christine Michael, then 12, turned to his mother, Mary, for guidance about his unusual first name for a boy.

"At first, I kind of took it hard," Michael said.

So she turned to an example set by Johnny Cash - the gruff singer - for a little help.

"She told me about a 'Boy Named Sue,'" Michael said Monday of the late Cash's big hit from 40 years ago. "She said I was like that boy named Sue. He didn't care, so I shouldn't care.'"

Cash's song ends with Sue at peace with his given name. So is Christine (pronounced "Chris-Tin"), he said.

"My mom wanted her first child to be a girl, and she had my name picked out from Day 1," Michael said, smiling. "She thought it was unique for a boy. Now, whatever anyone wants to call me, I just go along with it."

His name is Christine, but it is pronounced like Kristen...which isn't any better. On his wikipedia page, it actually says his mom saw it as a "Boy Named Sue" type deal.

Surprised this hasn't been bumped yet. I didn't see the game, but apparently 11-97-1, 1-25-0 don't do justice to the show. Anyone that saw it have anything to add?
He looked good, but his long TD run was a hole big enough to drive a car through. His explosiveness thru it was impressive bit a lot of RBs take that to the house IMO. Also, he was running mostly bs the 2nd team. Now, he made them look pretty foolish as he should. I wouldn't say it was a bump worthy day. It could actually be interpreted the opposite as Turbin saw action before him with the first team and Turbin also looked good.
yes agreed could have drove a milk truck through that but agree guy is explosive, powerful, fast and should be a stud in 2-3 years... first round pick in start up by 2015
I'm in agreement that the big run's hole was big, but I actually don't think many players get to the end zone on that one. He looked pretty damn fast and took the right line to get there. I really think the guy is going to be the real deal in 2 years.

On Turbin: last year it looked as though Turbin was bouncing off guys and going down. He also pretty routinely would get tripped up by ankle tackles. This year he is making better contact and seems to have the right leverage to push forward. He has had a couple ankle tackles again this preseason, but I suppose most RBs have those from time to time.

Turbin got 2nd string carries, but I think if Lynch were to go down Turbin would still get 3rd downs while Michael slips into the early down role. (As a side note, Michael had an excellent one-handed catch last night--he is very talented and just needs to work on pass protection to be a real 3-down back.)

Seahawks' rookie RB Christine Michael dazzles vs. Packers

By Rob Rang | The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com

Let's just state the obvious right away: the Seahawks' starting running back is Marshawn Lynch.

Lynch is not only a Pro Bowler, he's among the team's most respected players.

But it wasn't hard to imagine a future with 2013 second round pick Christine Michael operating as the lead back in Seattle after he tore through the Green Bay Packers Friday night for 122 all-purpose yards including a tie-breaking 43-yard touchdown.

Three plays, in particular, stood out, beginning with the score, which appeared to come against a mix of Green Bay's first and second units.

  • On the 43-yard touchdown run, Michael took the hand-off from Russell Wilson and exploded through a wide lane up the middle. Michael had several holes to choose from as the Seahawks' starting offensive line blocked it well. Further, he received a terrific downfield block by wideout Jermaine Kearse. It was the explosion with which the rookie hit the hole and accelerated down the sideline, however, that turned the potential 10-yard gain into an game-changing score.
  • After giving up a tying touchdown, Seattle fed Michael on their next snap from scrimmage. The rookie broke free off the left side for an even prettier run. Sliding left and right to evade defenders (and even incorporating a probably unnecessary spin move), Michael danced his way for a gain of 18.
  • Michael showed off more of his electric moves (and soft hands, as well) on a 25-yard catch and run in the early fourth quarter. After collecting the pass from Brady Quinn, the rookie burst ahead to simply out-ran defenders with obvious angles on him. The play gave Seattle momentum and they capitalized immediately. One snap later, Quinn hooked up with wideout Stephen Williams for a 42-yard score to give the Seahawks what wound up being the winning score.
Packers' rookie Eddie Lacy had been a focal point of the buildup to this preseason matchup between NFC favorites. With Aaron Rodgers only playing one series, however, the Seahawks were relatively free to tee off on the Packers' running game and they did so against Lacy, holding the rookie from Alabama to -5 yards on eight carries.

While the storyline was set up for Lacy, it was the athleticism of the rookie from Texas A&M, however, that wound up stealing the show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCVqxFeWFoUOh my goodness, why has no one shown me this before now? This guy glides across the field, makes ridiculous cuts. Can't go past Round 2 which means all of our teams realistically have a shot at this guy.A team like the Falcons couldn't go wrong signing Jackson to a deal and drafting this guy in the 2nd. Even if it required a little trading. I think he is a guy you bring in to compete potentially for the starting job, challenge a veteran.Would like to see Bruce Arians pull the trigger on this guy for my Cardinals.

Don't think I would trade him for any other rookie RB in his class at this point.

Maybe Gio, but only because he has more immediate opportunity.

His 40 was originally reported at 4.54 -- and he was a good prospect there. But once the final updates came through and it was lowered to 4.43 he turned into a monster. That's fast for a guy 220.

The only other RBs in the last 15 years or so who were under six feet tall and also big (at least 219 and not so tall that it reduces their effective size), fast (have a strong size-adjusted speed score), explosive (Michael is top 10 out of all the RBs in the database) and agile (combined cone scores under ~11.1 seconds) are...

Ladanian Tomlinson

Doug Martin

Ben Tate

But Tate's vision is subpar and he's not able to take full advantage of his physical tools.

If the character and injury stuff turns out not to be an issue (he was probably dinged 50-60 picks for those doubts -- so I don't think you can ignore them) he is pretty close to a sure thing as a top-end RB1 now that his on-field performance matches the measurables profile.

Own him in eight leagues and wouldn't trade him for any other rookie.

Jamal Lewis had to be right in that range.

How long can they realistically keep this guy off the field? Beastmode is well, a beast but Michael looks every bit legit.

This is a hell of an rb story for fantasy owners and quite a nice pickle for the Hawks to be in.

Rbbc THIS year??

Nope ... they run the wheels off lynch and let him go in free agency in 2015.
He's $7 million next year and $9 million in 15. He doesn't see that $9 million no matter what. He might be able to re-negotiate, but that usually requires either a big pay cut, which I bet he takes the out and tries to get signed elsewhere, or more money from the team, but spread out in a more cap friendly way. I don't see the Seahawks doing that with as many young studs they have to sign in the next two years and Lynch being 28 right now.

BUT, before they can let Lynch go or risk offering him a massive pay cut for 2015, they have to see what Michael can do in regular season games. Not sure that will happen this year barring an injury to Lynch. But next year, they are going to have to give TB some significant carries to make sure they can do without Lynch.

Does this mean Turbin is pretty much useless? I thought he looked fantastic last year and was a stash with future starting stud potential; this seems to blow that approach up.

Won't be RBBC this year. Lynch has a good year or two left.

I agree with everything you're saying, but he turned 27 a few months ago.

I picked him in 4 out of 4 keeper leagues in first round of rookie draft. I did not just because the talent, which I thought was #1 of all drafted RBs, but because I think he has a decent chance to replace Lynch as early as next year. Lynch's base salary was guaranteed this year, but it is not guaranteed next year. If SEA cuts Lynch next year, it will save a net $3M (or $4.5M if they cut him after June 1) off of what I think is a thin salary cap for them. When you add the fact that Lynch could be suspended for his DUI, there is a decent chance SEA moves on from Lynch. We should also remember that SEA drafted Spencer Ware in 5th round. Seems like they are preparing to move on.

Tough to hold this guy in redraft, but I'm going to give it a go. Just the sort of guy you would be backfilling your roster with later in the year as your fantasy playoffs approach. Unfortunately the backfilling has to start early with this one.

That's why his momma named him Christine - to turn him into a tough son-of-a-gun.

It worked, just like with a Boy Named Sue.

Last year we were all talking about how Turbin looks like a stud nfl back and now it's Christine.

What I read is that they think Turbin would be the 3rd down/change of pace back and Michael would be the early down back if Lynch went down.

Michael seems like the much better handcuff.

Agreed, having a tough time finding room for him on the roster in a league where you only keep 3 each year. Dude looked legit the other night, but he might only see 20 carries all year.

I'll certainly say it is possible. Leon Washington only had 23 carries last year and an additional 4 receptions, and it's plausible to think Michael will have that role this year. On the other hand, I think Lynch was hurt in the playoffs last year and part of that is the overall wear and tear he took over the year. If I were a better man, I think Lynch's carries actually dip back down into the 270 range and Michael gets more like 50-60. In this scenario Turbin will be the 3rd down back and see more like 50 or so carries as well as 30 or so receptions (he had 19 last season).

Still, it would take an injury for Christine Michael to be of value to anyone this year, so he's not likely to be of value for redraft. Dynasty however, I think he'll be a top 5 back in two years.

If the talent is there, he can probably surpass Lynch. Adrian Peterson kicked Chester Taylor to the curb. Not saying he's going to take over but it would be foolish to think Michael couldn't force a timeshare.

You don't draft a Running Back in the 2nd and not use him, especially if he is producing for you.

What would have been the point of the pick?
