Classic Album Discussion Thread: The Kinks-Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Pt. 1 (1 Viewer)

Glad to see things are somewhat back on track after the Steve Miller thing. Though I'm not a fan of slagging off Debra Iyall. Loved her and Romeo Void.

 
I played in a cover band my first year in college. I soon learned to loathe both Brown Sugar and, in particular, Sweet Home Alabama. #### I hate those songs. The crowds loved them though.

This time I am kidding.  Love them and think RS >>> Beatles, and they were one of the bands I was referring to when I said I preferred several others over The Beatles from that era.

I think one album per day is good.  The thread seems to move fast either way and doing more than one per day seems a bit much.  But that's me.

As for Sticky Fingers, very good record.  I like the Stones, but with the exception of a few songs, I rarely turn them on.  That said, there is no denying that Sticky Fingers is damn good from start to finish.  Sister Morphine is a helluva deep cut.

While the real debate was before my time, I would always pick the Stones over the Beatles when asked. I'm not a huge fan, I had a few albums, Sticky Fingers was one, and still like hearing them on the radio. Probably a band I should look deeper into at stuff I might not be as familiar with.

 
Sticky Fingers is a great album so are Let it Bleed and Exile on Main St but I have to confess Some Girls is my favorite  from the Stones . Because of my age Some Girls just means more

Some Girls is my favorite, too. Also have it on tangible media. Must be us new wavers/punkers sticking together or something about disco-punk that does it.  

 
All three bands are classic rock. Slade rarely got on the radio though- their biggest hit, “Run Runaway” was ironically a product of the post classic rock, MTV era of music. 

Deep Purple and The Faces are both bands with albums that we may discuss later on. Both bands have a couple of songs that got serious attention on AOR radio. 

 
Tough to beat the four album cycle of Beggars to Exile in the pantheon of great consecutive releases. Always toggle between SF and Exile as the top of the list. SF is tighter, but the beauty of Exile is the sprawl as well as being the one time Mick descended into Keith's world.

But in the AOR view, SF has more prevalent material in regular rotation.

Can't go wrong with any of 'em in my book

 
Sticky Fingers was released in 1971. I’ve discussed before how this was, IMO, the greatest year ever for popular music. We will be discussing a number of albums from this year. Here are some we won’t be discussing since they fall out of the genre: 

Marvin Gaye- What’s Going On

Joni Mitchell- Blue

Carole King- Tapestry

Funkadelic- Maggot Brain

I just listed 4 of the greatest albums ever, and that’s not even counting the classic rock, of which Sticky Fingers is only one of several all time recordings.

Critic David Hepworth wrote a 320 page book about this.  And you thought Tim went on.

Never a Dull Moment: 1971 The Year That Rock Exploded is loaded with stories of the artists, music and times. It's a page turner that would be a good read for anybody in this thread.  Hepworth is a good storyteller who is able to weave in some great material from a wide variety of sources (the "selected bibliography" runs four pages).  I found the story of Stevie Wonder's introduction to synthesizers fascinating.

We are kin on so many music topics. The little anti-classic rock post you made perfectly expressed my position. Of course, I'll always "like" this music. It is my base, my chidlhood, and half of my college experience. But it is played. 

Sympathy puts Beggars over the top for me. Some Girls was HS senior year and the only other Stones album I could sit down and write the lyrics to. That puts SF, LiB, and Exile in a 3-way tie for 3rd and The Stones my favorite band on topic.

 
I also want to discuss, at some point, bands and artists who got on the radio during this era with one or two songs, like we already did with Ted Nugent. I’m not talking about one hit wonders; several of these guys had long careers, but they are most famously known for one or two songs that got played for years. 

For example, Gary Wright. 

 
We like to listen to mostly 60's music with some 70's classic rock while sitting in our yard. I put together a nice station on Pandora but unfortunately the directv app keeps cutting out. Does anyone know a good Spotify or Amazon station with a good mix. Prefer mostly 60's with 70's classic rock mix.

I've made my own 60/70's list on Spotify.  Spotify took that and created a Daily Mix for it also with other songs not on my list.

 
Just want to chime in, I love my $9.99 monthly Google Play payment. I pull any song I want to hear on a whim, AND I get add-free youTube.

Pardon me while I bathe in our shared glory.

It was freshman sophomore year so my memory might be biased by that but I think combining Foreigner (77) Double Vision (78) for a discussion of the music might work. No reason to limit yourself with unnecessary rules. And yes, if some can love on Journey, Steve Miller and Rush, I was a fool for Foreigner when I first started kissing girls. Urgent from 4 is my favorite song because of the sax and a AA girl named Sin, but the first two albums are better.

I finally got a Spotify account in March. I was so far behind the times. I've had a great time reconnecting to all the old music I grew up with. I'm taking time out to listen to music almost every night now. Listened to a lot of Zep the other night because of this thread. Just listened to Honky Chateau and now going through GBYRoad. Haven't done that in decades.

yep... Was awesome last weekend when we rented a boat in Coeur d'Alene and went wake boarding and tubing.  Hooked up the Spotify to the bluetooth and we jammed for all four hours.
