Classic Album Discussion Thread: The Kinks-Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Pt. 1 (2 Viewers)

The Band-Music From The Big Pink (1968)

Tears Of Rage

To Kingdom Come

In A Station

Caledonia Mission

The Weight

We Can Talk

Long Black Veil

Chest Fever

Lonesome Suzie

This Wheel’s On Fire

I Shall Be Released

The Band (1969)

Across the Great Divide

Rag Mama Rag

The Nifht They Drove Old Dixie Down

When You Awake

Up On Cripple Creek

Whispering Pines

Jemima Surrender

Rockin’ Chair

Look Out Cleveland

Jawbone

The Unfaithful Servant

King Harvest (Has Surely Come)

The Band’s first two albums are of a piece and it is proper to consider them together single they form the essence of these (mostly) Canadian artists. We get the Dylan covers, the original songs by Danko and Robertson, the incredible harmonies of Helm, Danko, and Manuel, the brilliant keyboards by Garth Hudson- it’s all here. I love so many of these songs it’s hard to choose favorites, but “The Weight” is obviously an all time classic, and after that I might have to go with “Rockin’ Chair”. So sweet, so good.
I grew up listening to these records and have loved this music as long as I can remember.  When I want to listen to the Band these days, I usually find myself reaching for Before the Flood or one of the cds from the Last Waltz - my dad gave me the boxed set a few years ago.  Great timeless music.  Looking forward to comments from @wikkidpissah on this one based on prior snippets.

I prefer "The Band" but they are both great.  Not much after these two, in my opinion.  Three great singers, great harmonies, and groundbreaking fusion of Americana (which didn't exist until them) and rock.

Their later studio albums aren’t strong but there are some individual songs that I love:

The Shape I’m In

It Makes No Difference

Stage Fright

Acadian Driftwood
My favorite song from their later albums is Ophelia.

I'm a fan of The Band. Great musicians and I've always really liked Levon Helm's singing voice.

Yea I love The Band of course I'm an old fart brings back a lot of memories.  I watch or listen to The Last Waltz at least once a month.  Tim thanks for starting this thread it gives me a play list almost everyday.

I have been following as close as I can have we covered Janis or Joe Cocker yet?  Cocker always seems to get overlooked when discussing the greats.

This is my favorite clip from the Last Last Waltz.  Emmy and The Band together.

The Beach Boys- Pet Sounds

Wouldn’t It Be Nice

You Still Believe In Me

 That’s Not Me

Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)

 I’m Waiting For the Day

Let’s Go Away For A While

Sloop John B

God Only Knows

I Know There’s An Answer

Here Today

I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times

Pet Sounds

Caroline, No

OK, rockaction, this one’s for you.

If you take the 405 freeway south from Los Angeles airport you get very quickly to Hawthorne, Torrance, and some beach cities, all known as the South Bay Corridor. And this is where the Wilsons grew up. Theirs was a distinctly Southern Californian upbringing, and their music reflects this.  So host up the John B sail one more time, and check our their greatest album in the bright sunshine with the waves ready for surfing.

The irony being this is greatest melancholic rock and roll record ever made.

Ebullient melancholy, maybe. It takes a reductive listen to call it SoCal, a simple critical eye to call it melancholic, a real eye to call it ebullient, which I'll do. But still, this SoCal melancholic, ebullience, and greatness. If I could write greater epitaphs to Pet Sounds than the indie scene from '00-'18 wrote to Pet Sounds I would. But they already have, just musically. The Shins have. The greatest have already done it in formats better than I can. Music criticism fails where the musicians sail. I'm Waiting For The Day is playing now. The harmonies. Oh, the harmonies. Just beautiful. Thanks for calling, Sloop John B.

My God, I'm listening to the album and will check in with a review in the morning.

Terrific album. I didn't hear it until maybe 10 years ago, and I remember thinking that it would be another one of those albums that was overhyped and not that great , but I was totally wrong; it was that good and more.  I don't listen to much else by the Beach Boys, but this album is money.

And great to see The Band earlier. Both tremendous albums in their own right. Hard to single out one tune, but “Whispering Pines” is a personal favorite - so haunting.

Yep, after many decades of Help Me Rhonda and I Get Around on the radio, I wasn't expecting much on first listen. ####ing great album. In my top 10.

I'd just like to point out that the Beach Boys from '65-'66 were the most legit rock/pop band on the planet and only the Beatles touched them, and not even closely. By Gawd, the Beatles were scared of them being the biggest and most artistically dangerous act on the planet.

The ####### Beach Boys and Brian Wilson ruled the roost.

Definitely better than anything The Beatles put out. It's the best album of the 60s IMO. Also, I love the earlier Beach Boys surf stuff and even some of their later work like Sunflower.

I think Pet Sounds is a great album. I don't agree that it is better than anything The Beatles put out, but that is just my personal opinion. "Sloop John B" is my favorite song on the album.

Every time I see a certain person, I think of Caroline, No. She cut her hair and got tattoos. I hate that. I love that song; it's worth everything Brian Wilson experienced in writing the song. Oh Caroline, you make me want to go and cry/it's so sad to see such sweet thing die/oh Caroline, no/Who took that look away...

I know I'd said I'll write a write-up but what's a write-up already said?

Best pop album if Good Vibrations is on it. Ever. Check the links for a write-up, otherwise it gets too personal.

eta* BTW, doesn't have to be your personal favorite nor shoved down your throat (too much of that, IMO) it's just a record to explore and adore. Brian is at his finest; the Beach Boys are wonderful. That's all. It's just one of those things when people say you like the Beach Boys; they give this knowing look like "I know what you're about." But you don't. You have no idea. Love this album.

eta2* listening to it again and hearing what Hendrix said when he said "barbershop quartet on acid" (actually, quintet, but who is complaining about the compliment). They're stunning.

People can't forget what the indie scene owes the Beachies. Those years from '00-'10 don't happen without them, which is sort of the golden indie dialectic. Nothing happens in that scene without the Beach Boys. Luff.

I love Pet Sounds but the statement above is very incredibly, horribly false.
Not really. Pet Sounds, in albums of all time, rates three or better across outlets and media. It's only bested by Revolver, in most cases, if at all.

It is the best album out there, happenstance notwithstanding. It's just a great album; and on parallel with the Beatles in all respects. It's not a horribly false statement; it's judgment. Judgment is as judgment does. It leaves us to forage, to judge. That Pet Sounds comes up the best is pure judgment.

Yup. Really. Pet Sounds consistently comes out as the second or third best -- or best -- pop album ever. I don't want to fight over Pet Sounds, but that's where it comes out in the critical ether. YMMV, of course, but that's where it resides.

It’s an awesome listening experience. I’m not certain which side of the Pet Sounds versus Beatles catalogue I come down on - depends on my mood I guess, but would likely put Abbey Road and Revolver ahead of it with a gun to my head - but it’s surely not an outrageous proposition.

God Only Knows is the most beautiful pop song ever written. That’s not debeatable.  :P

It is not the best album out there.  It isn't parallel with the Beatles.

you really love to hear yourself type.

Have to say I’m surprised at the extent of the accolades in here.  Just never got into The Beach Boys.

Anyone else remember the Wonder Years episode where Kevin and Winnie break up after a field trip?  The final scene was scored to God Only Knows.  One of the most indelible moments of my childhood was hearing that song for the first time while watching that ep.

Great album overall, but that song is one of my all-timers.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I don't love much of the rest of their catalog.  God Only Knows is perfection.

But mostly I'm on strike against commenting on this record because I don't want to support the bullying that made tim list it next.

(ra, that's typed with a  ;)  )

I gotcha. I was laughing when I typed it and felt bad, which is why I told him that there was love right after I typed it. Any disagreement online w/Tim is worth having a  :)  or at least an acknowledgment of love. I felt bad given the starkness of words that my tone might be lost. I tried to re-assemble or reconstruct a tone that was hopefully not lost.

Peace, k4.
