Clogged garbage disposal (3 Viewers)

Looked up some troubleshooting online.

I stuck a wooden spoon in there to move the blades a bit and tried plunging it. The waterline went down slightly.

Nothing foreign fell down there. I think it must have been the apple core I tossed in this morning.

any advice?

Everything I read said not too put corrosive drain cleaner down there.

i was able to move the blades with the spoon. The blades are turning.

Did you try disconnecting the pipe coming off of it?  The elbow right there makes for a nice spot for food to clog in my experience.

 
If the disposal doesnt make any noise, go underneath and push in the little button which sometimes trips. Its kind of like a gfci built into the unit.

 
Troubleshooting a garbage disposal:

1- stick a spoon down there and jiggle it around

2- push the secret red button

3- fixed!

Yep, and if it's buzzing, use an allen wrench like already mentioned.  Had this happen to us last night, the allen wrench fixed it.

Like I said, this means the clog is in the pipes beyond the disposal.  Get a bucket and start disconnecting until you find the clog.  It's pretty easy and likely won't take you longer than 15 minutes unless the clog is beyond the trap.  Just be aware that once the pipes are disconnected all that water in the sink is coming out.  

One more question, do you have a single or double basin?

heres a pic of the disposal.

i can't get maintenance here on a sunday

the other drain works so I'm assuming it's right at the first bend of the black pipe coming out of it

If the other basin drains then the clog is in that black elbow.  That white ring at the bottom of the black elbow is removable with bare hands and there are probably a couple hex bolts holding it into the disposal.  

If it were me I would remove the trap and try sticking a rod up to that black elbow to loosen the clog.  If you remove the elbow entirely the water in the sink will shoot out horizontally.

 
There is usually an Allen wrench fitting on the bottom of most garbage disposals.  Manually turn the disposal with an Allen wrench and you can feel whatever is blocking it.  Once it turns freely, you know that you broke up whatever was clogging it.

 
If smoking a joint, passing out, and wrestling with basic disposal clog for 5 hours is how he spends his typical Monday.. I for one will be SHOCKED when his new job in Dallas is cut short due to nonperformance...

True story:  I ruined a disposal in an apartment I was renting.  Part of a pull tab got stuck under one of the blades.  I ended up punching a hole in the side wall of the disposal.  Fortunately I knew how to replace one.  Probably cost me $40 total.

Didn't know garbage disposals have been around that long.
